Abstract: In mice, oral treatment with HE3286 (40 mg/kg) significantly (p < 0.05) decreased neutrophil counts and exudate volumes (~50%) in carrageenan-induced pleurisy, and myeloperoxidase in lipopolysaccharide-induced lung injury. HE3286 (40 mg/kg) was not found to be profoundly immune suppressive in any of the classical animal models of immune function, including those used to evaluate antigen specific immune responses in vivo (ovalbumin immunization). When mice treated for two weeks with HE3286 were challenged with K. pneumoniae, nearly identical survival kinetics were observed in vehicle-treated, HE3286-treated and untreated groups.HE3286 represents a novel, first-in-class anti-inflammatory agent that may translate certain benefits of β-AET observed in rodents into treatments for chronic inflammatory pulmonary disease.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a term most often used to describe chronic bronchitis and emphysema [1,2] is an inflammatory disease of the lungs marked by a loss of elastic recoil, an increased resistance to airflow and decreased expiratory flow rate leading to dyspnea [3]. Chronic bronchitis, emphysema and cystic fibrosis (CF), all forms of COPD, share many features including a progressive airway remodeling driven by chronic inflammation [4-7]. COPD is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in industrialized countries and novel treatments are urgently needed because many patients respond poorly to conventional therapies [8-10]. Abstract: Recent literature suggests that children’s acquisition of DP is a process of gradual feature acquisition (Roeper 2006). This study looks at the acquisition of DP’s barrier feature from the perspective of the acquisition of the syntax of the English partitive construction. This study explores the contrast between the partitive and the pseudopartitive. An adjective preceding the partitive cannot modify the lower noun, but it can in an equivalent pseudopartitive construction. This study shows that children aged 3-5 do not make this distinction, suggesting that children don’t recognize partitive-internal DP as a barrier to adjectival modification.

Abstract: Clinical research laboratories, bioinformatics core facilities, and health science organizations often rely on heavy planning based software development models to propose, build, and distribute software as a consumable product. Projects in non-agile software life cycles tend to have rigid “plan-design-build” milestones, increasing the amount of time needed for software development completion. Though the classic software development approach is needed for large-scale and organizational projects, clinical research laboratories can expedite software development while maintaining quality by using lean prototyping as a condition of project advancement to a committed adaptive software development cycle. Software projects benefit from an agile methodology due to the active and changing requirements often guided by experimental data driven models. We describe a lean to adaptive method used in parallel with laboratory bench work to develop quality software quickly that meets the requirements of a fast-paced research environment and reducing time to production, providing immediate value to the end user, and limiting unnecessary development practices in favor of results.

Abstract: The first Journal of Transpersonal Psychology was published in 1969. Since this signal event, transpersonal psychology has emerged as a field of theory and application. A way has been made in Western psychology for the appreciation and study of interior subjective awareness, the domain of spiritual experience. One of the most recent contributions, the Wilber-Combs Lattice, offers a typology to account for both developmental processes throughout the human life span, as well as different qualities of spiritual experience.
Ultrastructure of the optic gland of the squid Sepiotheutis sepioidea (Cephalopoda: Loliginidae)

Abstract: i describe the fine structure of the optic gland (og) in the tropical squid sepiotheutis sepioidea at different sexual maturity stages. squids were collected in mochima national park, venezuela (10°; 20' 22 " - 10°; 24' n; 64° 19' - 64 ° 22' w). morphometric characteristics and the development of reproductive organs at different sexual maturity stages (female n = 101; male n = 105), were significantly different (anova, p < 0.001). the female gonadal index mean (gi = (ovary weight / body weight) x 100) between 0.1 - 2.95 %, and the male gi mean (gi = (testicule weight / body weight) x 100) oscillated between 0.22 - 1.38 %. the og are a pair of oval organs located at the posterior edge of the optic tract of the cephalopod brain. the og showed the same cellular types described in other cephalopods, with slight differences. the secretory cells in young individuals present a dendritic profile with thin cytoplasmic processes, numerous circular mitochondriae with tubular crests and abundant ribosomes. at the last stage of maturity the secretory cells contain rough endoplasmic reticulum in the form of dilated cisternae, with an active golgi apparatus, secreting electron dense granules. mitochondriae are scarce and lipofuchsin granules show an increase in size. secretory cell nucleus length and organelle abundance showed oscillations associated with the life cycle.

Abstract: Two kinds of formal models need to be distinguished: data models derived from patterned observations and theory models derived from theories about processes that produce the patterned observations. These correspond to the difference between the phenomenal domain of observations and the ideational domain of theories. Explanation can be characterized by isomorphism between data models and theory models. The physical, biological and cultural domains differ by what constitute the relevant structuring processes for each of these domains. The cultural domain associated with human societies is far more complex than the other two because the domain of observation must include cultural idea systems. One of the primary roles of formal models for cultural idea systems is to determine the necessary consequences (through mathematical reasoning) of processes hypothesized to provide their internal coherency.

Se examinó la ultraestructura fina de la glándula óptica (GO) en varios estadios de desarrollo sexual del calamar tropical Sepiotheutis sepioidea, proveniente de las costas de la Bahía de Mochima, Venezuela (10° 20' 22 " - 10° 24' N; 64° 19' - 64° 22' W). Los parámetros morfométricos y de los órganos reproductivos (hembras n = 101; machos n = 105), presentaron diferencias significativas entre los estados de maduración sexual (ANOVA, p < 0.001), el índice gonadal promedio en las hembras osciló entre 0.1 - 2.95 %, y en los machos entre 0.22 - 1.38 %. La GO son un par de órganos ovales ubicados en el borde posterior del tracto óptico en el cerebro de los cefalópodos, ésta posee los mismos tipos de células descritos en otros cefalópodos con algunas leves diferencias. La célula principal en el estadio de maduración juvenil posee un perfil dendrítico con delgados procesos del citoplasma, abundantes ribosomas, mitocondrias circulares con crestas tubulares, y un núcleo prominente eucromatínico; en el estadio de adulto las células principales presentan las cisternas del retículo endoplasmático rugoso dilatadas concéntricamente en la célula, el aparato de Golgi es activo con abundantes gránulos electron densos

Modeling the transition to turbulence in shear flows

Abstract: One-dimensional models are presented for transitional shear flows. The models have two variables corresponding to turbulence intensity and mean shear. These variables evolve according to simple equations based on known properties of transitional turbulence. The first model considered is for pipe flow. A previous study modeled turbulence using a chaotic tent map. In the present work turbulence is modeled instead as multiplicative noise. This model captures the character of transitional pipe flow and contains metastable puffs, puff splitting, and slugs. These ideas are extended to a limited model of plane Couette flow.
