Abstract: this is an ethnographic study developed in a community, in brazil. its objectives were to understand the care with wounds. concepts of cultural anthropology and of the theory of social representations were adopted as theoretical frameworks. the narratives of eight women and the analyses of data showed that, in this community, the inhabitants have peculiar manner of explaining the wounds, admitting natural, social and a spiritual causes more than therapeutic procedures. a hiatus between the health professionals and the population was identified, demonstrating that mainly linguistic and cultural barriers generate this. in conclusion, this study showed the importance and the need for the establishment of intercultural dialogue between those two groups, which can be achieved by means of changes in the paradigms that guide the teaching, the research and the practice of nurses and other health professionals

Abstract: the tunneled epidural catheter as an administration access for opiates has been used since the beginning of 1980. patients with chronic pain, who does not get relief with medication through other accesses are benefited with infusion of opiate associated to a local anesthetic through epidural access. however, there are still doubts on the efficacy of the method in the handling and, consequently, over the risk for infection and other complications. as nursing is fundamental to make effective the relieve pain treatment, this study proposes to demonstrate how to keep safe the technique. twenty-seven patients with chronic pain using epidural catheter for 18 days were followed between 2002 and 2004. catheters were implanted in thoracic or lumbar level. no complications like epidural abscess, meningitis our epidural haematoma were observed. patients' satisfaction related to analgesia was evident.

Abstract: descriptive cross-sectional study on breastfeeding experiences, using a questionnaire with 1078 children aged between 7 and 12 years, in the 3rd and 4th years of primary education in public schools. most children knew that they and their siblings had been breastfed and had used a pacifier. few had seen their mother breastfeeding, seen their father close to their mother while breastfeeding their siblings, or reported that nurses in the school had talked to them about breastfeeding. furthermore, when playing with their dolls, most girls did not pretend to breastfeed, and 771 (71.5%) reported their dolls had bottles, or pacifiers, and pretended to feed their dolls with a bottle. they say they would enjoy breastfeeding, but where embarrassed of doing that in public. the books and cartoons that these children usually read and watch do not show women breastfeeding. many children consider breast milk to be the best food for the baby, but they have several misconceptions, and not all the children knew what breastfeeding was.

Abstract: in order to get to know how breastfeeding is approached in 1st cycle basic education children’s textbooks, and what they learn in school about this subject, we analysed, 19 environmental studies textbooks, used in 73 public schools, from the 1st to 4th years of education, in six school clusters in the coimbra education area in portugal. in the analysis of the concepts presented to the child, we defined a priori some considered essential to teach and explain to children the basics of breastfeeding. only two school books for the 3rd year each included content on "we are mammals. we feed at the breast of our mothers after birth” and “it is natural to take breast milk after birth”. analysis of the manuals showed that there are many opportunities to teach, enlighten and help the child to learn about a breastfeeding culture because this topic may be included in various chapters of the educational program; however, these opportunities are wasted and in this didactic material various illustrations used promote a culture of artificial feeding.
Perfil epidemiológico dos clientes com HIV/AIDS da unidade ambulatorial de hospital escola de grande porte: município de S?o Paulo

Abstract: this study aimed to characterize the epidemiological profile of patients with hiv/aids at an outpatient service, to analyze the infection stage on the patient's first return, lethality and program evasion. a descriptive and analytical epidemiological study was carried out during nursing appointments with 1837 clients. most participants were men (1.71 men / 1 woman), between 30 and 39 years old (46.8%); residents in s?o paulo (86.5%); low education level (76.3%). most women were living with partners (45.4%), whereas most men were single (53.3%). the main category of exposure was heterosexual behavior (83.5% among men and 71.2% among women). both male and female participations discovered their hiv/aids positive condition in advanced stages (57%). opportunistic infection levels were significantly higher (p< 0.05) among men. for men and women, the predominant opportunistic infection was tuberculosis (26.2%). cd4<350 results on the first return were significantly higher (p = 0.04) among women. death risk was greater among women (or =1.72), whereas the risk of treatment evasion was greater among men (or = 1.72).

Abstract: the authors briefly analyze the situation of maternal health care in brazil and, based on their findings, they comment that there have been transformations in the health care model for women and families and propose some measures, including recovery of the work of the obstetric nurse or midwife (obstetriz, in portuguese). they comment that women care tendencies in the delivery process presuppose incorporation of the paradigm of improving the physiology of valuing women's experience, the approach to the family, health advice that prioritizes prevention, education and relationships, without ignoring safety. they appoint that building this health care model, which includes the work of the midwife, may improve maternal health indicators.

Abstract: Para analisar os currículos e os livros escolares adotados nos primeiros cinco anos do Ensino Fundamental na disciplina de Ciências quanto à presen a ou n o de termos relacionados à prática da amamenta o, realizamos um estudo descritivo analisando o currículo e 16 manuais de 25 escolas públicas de três municípios do interior paulista, de setembro/2010 a fevereiro/2011. Definimos previamente alguns conceitos considerados imprescindíveis para ensinar e explicar à crian a no es de amamenta o. Verificamos que nenhum bloco temático do currículo aborda explicitamente a temática amamenta o. Nove dos 16 conteúdos definidos estavam presentes em oito dos 16 livros. Da análise emergiu a categoria apoio e ajuda da família. Três obras utilizavam ilustra es associadas à alimenta o artificial. No programa e nos manuais escolares existem diversas oportunidades de incluir este tema. Aconselha-se a integra o dos conteúdos em todos os manuais de Ciências dos primeiros anos do ensino fundamental. Para analizar los programas y libros escolares adoptados en los primeros cinco a os de Ense anza Primaria en la materia de Ciencias respecto de la presencia o ausencia de términos relacionados a la práctica de la lactancia, realizamos un estudio descriptivo, analizando el programa y 16 manuales de 25 escuelas públicas en tres municipios del interior paulista, entre setiembre 2010 y febrero 2012. Definimos previamente algunos conceptos considerados imprescindibles para ense ar y explicar al ni o nociones de lactancia. Verificamos que ninguna unidad temática del programa aborda explícitamente la cuestión. Nueve de los dieciséis contenidos definidos estaban presentes en ocho de los dieciséis libros. Del análisis surgió la categoría apoyo y ayuda familiar. Tres obras utilizaban ilustraciones asociadas a la alimentación artificial. En el programa y manuales escolares existe oportunidad de incluir el tema. Se aconseja integración de contenidos en todos los manuales de Ciencias de los primeros a os de ense anza primaria. To review the curricula and content of 1st- through 5th-year elementary school science textbooks with respect to the presence or absence of terms related to breastfeeding, we conducted a descriptive study analyzing the curricula and 16 textbooks of 25 public schools in 03 municipalities of S o Paulo between September 2010 and February 2011. In particular, we defined essential concepts to teach and explain breastfeeding to children. We found that no block themed curriculum explicitly addressed the theme of breastfeeding.
