Abstract: the experiment was carried out to characterize a manipulated caatinga and to estimate the botanical composition and quality of diet for fistulated steers. the experiment was carried out during the rainy season from march to july, 2003. caatinga was browsed by 24 guzerá and 12 girolando breed heifers and by two esophageal fistulated steers. in caatinga, it was identified 24 families, 38 genus, and 41 species in the two studied strata (out of them, ten species were found in the diets of the animals). forage mass of herbaceous and shrubby-tree components ranged, respectively, from 6,454 and 3,495 kg dm/ha in the beginning of the experiment to 782 and 378 kg dm/ha in the end. in the shrubby-tree and in the herbaceous strata, species grouped as "other species" showed higher absolute frequency. the shrubby-tree stratum is formed mainly by legumes whereas the herbaceous stratum is formed mainly by the "other species" group. grass presence in the diet ranged from 55% in the beginning to 41.8% at the end of the experimental period. "mororó" legume and the buffel grass had high absolute frequencies, showing an expressive presence in the vegetation. leaves of mororó and non-identified grass prevailed in the diet. significant portion of forage crude protein is unavailable because it is linked to acid detergent fiber.

Abstract: through multivariate techniques the phenetic divergence among clones of cactus forage was evaluated, in an experiment installed at experimental station of the empresa pernambucana de pesquisa agropecuária - ipa, caruaru - pe. the experimental design was a complete block design, with three blocks. the treatments were 19 clones of cactus forage of the bank of germoplasma of ipa. it was measured: a) measures in cladodios, according to the order: length, width, thickness, number and weight of the green matter; b) measures by plant: thorn presence, number of cladodios for order and total, total height, infestation for cochineal and weight of the green matter. it was applied the univariate analyses of variance (anova) and multivariate (manova), the canonical variables (cv) and cluster analysis (ca). in anova difference were verified among the averages of clones. differences among vectors of averages of clones were detected by means of manova. it was possible to reduce the original dimensionality for two dimensions, that explained of 85.03% of the total variation, by applicating vc. the infestation percentage by cochineal was considered a characteristics susceptible to discard. in ca was discriminated nine group. in the studied conditions, the characteristic infestation percentage for cochineal should not be included in the study of the genetic diversity; the characteristics of larger discrimination were thickness average for cladodio primary, secondary and tertiary, number of primary cladodio and medium weights of green matter for secondary and tertiary cladodio, in a program of crossing of cactus forage, it must be considered the group of clones and the clone performance as characteristics with higher agronomic relevance and animal science.

Abstract: this trial was conducted to investigate the replacement of soybean meal with a mixture of urea plus cassava scrapings on nutrient intake, digestibility, and production of crossbred lactating cows fed diets containing forage cactus (opuntia ficus indica, mill), sorghum silage, and concentrate. eight crossbred holstein:zebu cows averaging 60±30 days in milk and initial body weight (bw) of 491 kg were randomly assigned to two replicated 4 × 4 latin squares and were fed diets with increasing levels of urea plus cassava scrapings: 0, 33, 67 or 100%. replacing soybean meal with urea plus cassava scrapings linearly decreased the intakes of dm (kg, % bw and g/bw kg0.75), om, cp, ee, ndf, and tc. however, the increasing dietary levels of urea plus cassava sacrapings did not affetc the intakes of ndf (% bw), adf, nfc, and tdn. apparent digestibilities of all nutrients showed significant quadratic effects with increasing urea plus cassava scrapings. milk yield, milk yield corrected for 4.0% fat and milk fat yield all decreased linearly by 30, 20 and, 0.8 g/day, respectively, while fat content and feed efficiency, expressed as kg of 4.0% fat corrected milk/kg of dm, were not changed by decreasing soybean meal in the diet.
