Abstract: this study aimed to identify the training in chemical dependency and the sources of knowledge used by nurses who work in psycho-social community alcohol and drug centers in brazil. the subjects were 16 nurses who worked in these centers in the city of s?o paulo between september and december of 2007. data was collected through self-recorded registries and then submitted to thematic content analysis. the results showed that 68.8% of respondents did not have specific training in alcohol and other drugs, while 93.8% received no preparation in this area from their undergraduate nursing degree program. the participants identified relevant literature and periodicals, information online, and living interaction with other team members as sources of knowledge. this study concludes there is a lack of specific training in the field of psychoactive substances in formal nursing education; as a result, nurses resort to other - not always reliable - sources in their pursuit of nursing knowledge.

Vargas, Divane de;Oliveira, Marcia Aparecida Ferreira de;Duarte, Fernando Augusto Bicudo;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692011000100016
Abstract: this exploratory study with a qualitative approach aimed to identify nurses' insertion and practices at psychosocial care centers for alcohol and drugs in s?o paulo city, brazil. sixteen nurses participated in the study. data were recorded and were analyzed by dialectic hermeneutics and guided by brazilian psychiatric reform premises. the results evidenced nurses' difficulties to take part in the care recommended at these services, as their practices are more linked up with the traditional mental health care model. causes of this phenomenon include nurses' lack of preparation to act in psychoactive substance-related issues and lack of knowledge on specific contents that would favor their insertion into care practice in these scenarios. it is concluded that more attention should be paid to these contents in nursing education, as the legal requirement of nursing presence at these services is insufficient as a strategy to guarantee their actual insertion.

NURSING STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS ALCOHOL, ALCOHOLISM AND ALCOHOLICS: A STUDY OF A BRAZILIAN SAMPLE
Divane de Vargas
Journal of Nursing Education and Practice , 2012, DOI: 10.5430/jnep.v2n1p1
Abstract: Objective:Various international studies have reported on negative attitudes of nurses and nursing students towards substance misusers and have found that this issue receives little attention in professional nursing education. This research examined attitudes towards alcohol, alcoholism and alcoholics in a Brazilian nursing student sample and analyzed associations between these attitudes and participants’ socio-demographic characteristics. Methods: Study participants were 144 last-year undergraduate students from two private colleges. A scale of attitudes towards alcohol, alcoholism and alcoholics was used for data collection. Results: The results showed that most participants had positive attitudes towards alcohol, alcoholism and alcohol addicts. In addition, gender, age and the number of hours participants spent in lectures on alcohol and other drugs during their education were associated with positive attitudes towards their work and interpersonal relationships with alcoholics. This association was stronger in females (OR = 3.42), younger participants (OR = 2.18) and students who received more lecture hours on alcohol and other drugs during their education (OR = 3.53). Conclusion: In conclusion, the authors suggest that education and preparation in coping with drug problems increase nurses’ abilities at work and support more positive attitudes towards clients with drug problems. In addition, this study demonstrated that a significant part of students had negative attitudes towards alcohol, alcoholism and alcohol addicts, despite the fact that positive attitudes prevailed in their schools. These results reflect the lack of importance granted to drug issues in undergraduate nursing curricula in Brazil.
