Major combined electrolyte deficiency during therapy with low-dose Cisplatin, 5-Fluorouracil and Interferon alpha: report on several cases and review of the literature [ISRCTN62866759]

Abstract: A patient with resected adenocarcinoma of the pancreas was treated with adjuvant radio-chemo-immunotherapy using a combination of low-dose Cisplatin, 5-Fluorouracil and Interferon alpha together with external beam radiation. Severe hypocalcaemia without signs of acute renal failure or electrolyte disturbance occurred within 2 days at the 4th week of treatment and required intensive care treatment.Combination of biological and cytotoxic therapies may increase the incidence of severe hypocalcaemia in pancreatic cancer. Oncologists should remain attentive of this problem as more highly active regimes become available.Hypocalcaemia is a known side-effect in high-dose Cisplatin chemotherapy of solid tumors [1,2]. In the classic case, hypocalcaemia is caused by excessive urinary loss and decreased renal up-take during high-dose Cisplatin treatment. Proximal tubular damage leads to decreased reabsorption of cations. Acute nephrotoxicity presents with increased creatinine and persistent protein and electrolyte losses. Chronic nephrotoxicity is characterized by a decrease of glomerular filtration rate and a slightly elevated but persistent magnesium, potassium and calcium excretion [3]. Hypomagnaesemic induced hypocalcaemia is caused by inhibition of parathyroid hormone secretion, impaired calcium release from the bones and low tissue responses to PTH due to low magnesium levels. Cisplatin associated hypocalcaemia and hypercalciuria can not be influenced by calcium supplementation. Correction of magnesium blood levels usually should improve the hypocalcaemia [4]. Hypocalcaemia may be associated with tetany, depression, carpopedal spasm, neuromuscular excitability, cardiac arrythmias with prolonged Q-T interval and sudden death, making it a true oncological emergency [5].Outside cytotoxic therapy hypocalcaemia has been observed after thyroid and parathyroid surgery, chronic renal failure, acute rhabdomyolysis and pancreatitis [6-9]. Abstract: We study the influence of solar activity on climate by investigating the relation between the long-term components of the total magnetic fluxes of both the equatorial and polar fields of the sun and the average terrestrial ground temperature. This is done for the period 1610 (beginning of systematic sunspot observations) till present with an extrapolation to 2015. It is found that from 1610 till about the first half of the 20th century the variation of the long-term average terrestrial ground temperatures is chiefly due to the variation of solar activity, with seemingly random, non-solar residuals. Around 2007, after the Grand Maximum of the 20th century, solar activity, after having gone through a remarkable transition period (~2005 to ~2010), entered into another Grand Episode. That Episode started with the present solar cycle, in shape comparable to the equally weak Schwabe cycle #14. The transition period, in combination with the present low Schwabe cycle causes that the solar contribution to the total terrestrial temperature variation is small during the on-going decade. It results in a slowing down of the rise of temperature after ~2005.
Supersymmetry beyond minimal flavour violation

Abstract: We review the sources and phenomenology of non-minimal flavour violation in the MSSM. We discuss in some detail the most important theoretical and experimental constraints, as well as promising observables to look for supersymmetric effects at the LHC and in the future. We emphasize the sensitivity of flavour physics to the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking and to new degrees of freedom present at fundamental scales, such as the grand unification scale. We include a discussion of present data that may hint at departures from the Standard Model.
Theory of charmless hadronic B-decays

Abstract: I summarize results and performance of the dynamical theory of charmless hadronic B decays, based on QCD factorization in the heavy quark limit. On the theoretical side, a number of NNLO (alpha_s^2) amplitudes are now available, all showing a well-behaved perturbative expansion. The large observed branching fraction in B0 -> pi0 pi0 remains a challenge, implying either a large inverse moment of the B-meson wave function or a sizable power correction (or unexpected new physics). B-factory/Belle2 analyses of B -> gamma l nu may shed light on this. On the other hand, the new Belle and LHCb measurements of A_CP(pi^+ pi^-) bring the experimental result closer to QCDF predictions, similar to what is found in B -> pi K decays, while S_pipi gives a competitive gamma-determination. I remind the reader that for vector-vector final states, a theoretical treatment of the full set of helicity amplitudes has existed and met with some success since the B-factory era, and applies equally to LHCb measurements of e.g. B_s -> phi phi.
Photoproduction of single inclusive jets at future ep colliders in next-to-leading order QCD

Abstract: A next-to-leading order QCD calculation for single-inclusive jet photoproduction in unpolarized and longitudinally polarized lepton-hadron collisions is presented which consistently includes ``direct'' and ``resolved'' photon contributions. The computation is performed within the ``small-cone approximation'' in a largely analytical form. Phenomenological aspects of jet production at future ep colliders such as the CERN-LHeC and the polarized BNL-eRHIC are discussed, placing particular emphasis on the perturbative stability of the predictions and the possibility to constrain the parton content of the photon.

“Best read books” in Slovenian public libraries

Abstract: The paper investigates hundred most borrowed books in public libraries in perspective of some trends in reading habits and general mission of public libraries. It introduces genres and quality of most borrowed books in Slovenian public libraries. The research was based on one hundred best read monographs in Slovenian public libraries during the six year period. The analyzed data from the database conducted by Institute of Information Science since 2002 include all public libraries which use the COBISS.SI system and have automated borrowing. The best read books show big qualitative differences among most borrowed titles. Opposed to few artistic literature titles, the majority of borrowed books are popular literature. The first type of literature represents obligatory reading titles in secondary school system. The list of best read books indicates that the majority of users’ interests are moving apart from public libraries strategic aims.
