Abstract: The quality of the water is a universal necessity that demands attention of sanitary authorities and general consumers, mainly for fountains like wells, springs and headwaters destined to human consumption, since their contamination by human and animal excretions may become a vehicle that transmit diseases. The objective of this research was to evaluate the microbiological conditions and the potability of water in three headwaters located in S o Francisco’s slum in Campo Mour o - Paraná. The multiple tube method was used to microbiological evaluation of water. Presumptive and confirmative test for total coliform bacteria and the test for presence of thermotolerant coliforms were carried out. The results have shown that water collected in three evaluated headwater were not up to the microbiological potability standards determined by the National Agency of Health Surveillance. The families which use this water are in risky of contracting diseases. It demonstrates the importance of alert the competent authorities about the necessity of drinking water supply and garbage disposal in S o Francisco slum.

Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2016.53018
Abstract: A 62 years old, post-menopausal female was admitted to the Internal Medicine Ward due to dyspnoea, cough and sputum of at least 2 months. Shortness of breath, cough and hypoxaemia persisted and the patient was submitted to a pulmonary angiogram ct which revealed numerous thin-walled air cysts affecting upper and medial zones of both lungs, typical images of pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis. After discharge to Internal Medicine Consultation Service with Metilprednisolone, the patient was no longer hypoxaemic and remained asymptomatic, even after withdrawal of oral corticosteroid to inhalatory formulation. Further surveillance in short time was scheduled in order to implement rapid imunossupressive treatment when necessary.

The goal of this study was to evaluate ultrasonographically the mediolateral (DML) and dorsal-palmar (DDP) diameter of the flexor tendons in vaquejada horses that run from right or from left. From the 33 animals included in the experiment, 16 ran from right and 17 from left. Measurements were made on the IB (4-8 cm distal to the accessory carpal bone), IIB (12-16 cm distal to the accessory carpal bone) and IIIB (20-24 cm distal to the accessory carpal bone) zones of the superficial digital flexor tendon (TFDS) and deep digital flexor tendon (TFDP), using an ultrasound device coupled to a multifrequency linear transducer. Resultsshow that the type of training (running right or left) induces a significant difference (P 0.05) in the DML and DDP measures between antimeres, with difference ranging from 1.14% (DDP of TFDP, IIIB zone, in horses that run from right) to 19.17% (DDP of TFDP, IB zone, in horses that run from left), and that animals that run from right presented greater hypertrophy in the flexor tendons of the left forelimb, and vice versa. It can be concluded that vaquejada horses present significant differences between antimeres on DML and DDP of intact forelimb flexor tendons

Abstract: scientific activity in brazil has experienced an accelerated growth in the past decades, with an increase in productivity that greatly surpasses the international average. this growth has occurred mostly at the expense of centers of excellence in public universities, which account for the vast majority of the country's scientific output. the aim of this study was to evaluate the production of the department of biochemistry of a large public university in southern brazil (universidade federal do rio grande do sul), as well as to identify internal and external policies that have influenced this growing production profile. we have performed a historical analysis of the scientific output of this department of biochemistry, which accounts for a considerable share of the indexed scientific production at this university. by focusing on the temporal course of its growth and drawing correlations between scientific output and important events in the history of the department of biochemistry and of the brazilian science policies, we concluded that internal factors (as the creation of a postgraduation program, collaboration among researchers, experienced abroad researchers, qualification of faculty members) and external factors (as investments in the postgraduate education, the establishment of national scientific policies, such as financial stimuli for productive researchers and evaluation systems) influence scientific productivity in brazil.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-06832008000300010
Abstract: pastures cover nearly 50 million hectares in the cerrado region. the oxisols, which cover approximately half this area, are highly weathered soils composed mainly of kaolinite, iron and aluminum oxides. iron and aluminum oxides have a great influence on the retention of phosphorus (p) in these soils. the aim of this study was to quantify the total phosphorus levels, as well as p availability and retention in oxisols under pasture in the cerrado region and to relate the data with soil mineralogical, textural and chemical characteristics. the relations between the studied parameters were analyzed by principal component analysis and linear correlation analysis. the ion-exchange resin extractable p was negatively correlated with mineralogical and texture soil characteristics, and positively with soil organic matter contents. both the total free and the poorly crystalline oxides were negatively correlated with equilibrium p (prem). gibbsite, goethite as well as the total free and poorly crystalline oxides were negatively correlated with prem, indicating their effects on p adsorption to cerrado oxisols. conversely, kaolinite was not significantly correlated with prem. the negative correlation between prem and total carbon (c total) was due to the linear increase of soil carbon with the clay and silt contents. the iron and aluminum oxides were the characteristics that most influenced prem of cerrado oxisols.

Química Nova , 2006,
Abstract: A systematic electrochemical study of a novel cyanide free galvanic plating solution of alkaline zinc is presented. Cell Hull tests and potentiodynamic linear polarization measurements were carried out to evaluate the influence of operational parameters, such as concentration, current efficiency and degradation of additives. The stability of the bath was assessed by a long term test during 40 h at 200 A m-2. The morphology of the coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed good performance of the plating solution. The cost is similar to that of the commercial cyanide bath and lower than that of the commercial cyanide free bath.
