Abstract: in this work, a kiln energy model was developed with the main objective of assessing energy consumption in industrial lumber kilns. the model simulates kiln energy consumption on the basis of a simplified description of kiln technologies, energy systems and lumber characteristics, and it requires a minimum set of empirical parameters that are calibrated in practice. in this study, the model calibration was performed for a laboratory scale conventional kiln and three experimental drying runs of 50 mm thick spruce-pine lumber. the results of this study illustrate how the kiln energy model is calibrated, compares experimental and simulated mc, energy and water consumption, and describes how the model simulates different components of energy consumption that can be used to evaluate potential energy saving strategies.

Abstract: we have studied a dissipative version of a one-dimensional fermi accelerator model. the dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two-dimensional, nonlinear area-contracting map. the dissipation is introduced via inelastic collisions of the particle with the walls and we consider the dynamics in the regime of high dissipation. for such a regime, the model exhibits a route to chaos known as period doubling and we obtain a constant along the bifurcations so called the feigenbaum's number d.

Abstract: this article discusses the question of repetition in freudian theory. beginning with pre-psychoanalytic texts, we go back to the concept of the experience of pain, which confronts us with the problem of the repetition of displeasure. pain appears as a failure of protective mechanisms of the neuronal apparatus and indicates the existence of a process that, despite involving displeasure, continues to be repeated. the process also provides indications of the concept that, twenty years later, freud called compulsion to repetition.

Abstract: The influence of urban raw sewage, in terms of per capita load pollution of major dissolved inorganic chemical species, in fluvial dissolved load was estimated using a model of punctual sewage contributions without previous treatment, in urban central area of Piracicaba city, SP. The inorganic loads represented by major cations, anions and dissolved silica, were determined in both raw sewage and in the river, before and after the river crossing the urban area. This model also allowed the contributions of these chemical species of total effluent loads to be estimated for the entire drainage basin, as well their respective contributions per capita.

Abstract: We study some dynamical properties of a classical time-dependent elliptical billiard. We consider periodically moving boundary and collisions between the particle and the boundary are assumed to be elastic. Our results confirm that although the static elliptical billiard is an integrable system, after to introduce time-dependent perturbation on the boundary the unlimited energy growth is observed. The behaviour of the average velocity is described using scaling arguments.
In-flight dissipation as a mechanism to suppress Fermi acceleration

Abstract: Some dynamical properties of time-dependent driven elliptical-shaped billiard are studied. It was shown that for the conservative time-dependent dynamics the model exhibits the Fermi acceleration [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 014103 (2008)]. On the other hand, it was observed that damping coefficients upon collisions suppress such phenomenon [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 224101 (2010)]. Here, we consider a dissipative model under the presence of in-flight dissipation due to a drag force which is assumed to be proportional to the square of the particle's velocity. Our results reinforce that dissipation leads to a phase transition from unlimited to limited energy growth. The behaviour of the average velocity is described using scaling arguments.
