Contado, Ellem Waleska Nascimento da Fonseca;Patto, Leonardo da Silva;Rocha, Denise Alvarenga;Abreu, Celeste Maria Patto de;Corrêa, Angelita Duarte;Santos, Custódio Donizete dos;
Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542010000700005
Abstract: the carrot (daucus carota l.) is a plant of the umbelliferae family. it produces an aromatic and edible root, and is one of the most widely cultivated vegetable in brazil. it represents the main source of plant-origin, pro-vitamin a carotenoids, especially α and β-carotene, and is also a great source of dietary fiber, antioxidants and minerals. this study aimed to evaluate two methods of extraction of β-carotene, supercritical fluid (sfe) and conventional, and to examine the proximate composition of the carrot in nature. the contents of β-carotene obtained by sfe and by conventional extraction were 2,457 and 2,455 μg/100g, respectively. the average values found for the dry-matter of the carrot were: dry matter = 8.9%; ether extract = 0.29%; ashes = 8.11%, crude fiber = 14.57%, crude protein = 6,4%, non- nitrogen extract = 6.3% and caloric value = 27.7 kcal. it is concluded that the extraction of carotenoids using the supercritical fluid is a viable separation technique since this fluid is inert and does not generate waste or final environmental waste. it can be concluded from the levels found that carrots are good sources of fiber, present high moisture content and low fat, ash and calorific value.

Abstract: this paper applies and discusses the application to brazil of the barometer of sustainability, a two-coordinated measure of the well-being of nations, including values for both human and ecosystem well-being and progress toward sustainable development. the main objective was to aggregate a set of sustainable development indicators in thematic and dimensional indices, to assess sustainability. performance scales were created for each indicator. in this way it was possible to compare and aggregate indicators. the barometer approach shows the overall sustainability of brazil ("intermediate", near "almost insustainable").
Effects of the combined use of glutamine and growth hormone in the intestinal adaptation after massive resection of the small bowel in rats
Spadoni, Joaquim M.;Aguilar-Nascimento, José Eduardo de;Silva, Maria H.G. Gomes da;Spadoni-Neto, Bruno;Costa, Priscila Arruda Thulio F. Batista da;Aléssio, Denise Maria T.;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502005000500008
Abstract: purpose: the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the combined use of glutamine (gl) and growth hormone (gh) in the intestine of rats submitted to 80% small bowel resection. methods: [24] twenty four wistar rats were randomized to receive either a standard rat chow - control group (cg, n=12) or the same diet added to 4% glutamine - gl-gh group (n=12) after 80% enterectomy. the latter group received subcutaneously 0,6ui/day of gh. groups of six rats in each group were killed on the 5th and 14th days. the following variables were studied: body weight, mucosal weight, histomorphometry and dna content in the resected specimen and in the adapted intestines after necropsy. results: all animals lost weight stabilizing after the 5th po day in both groups. there was not any statistical difference in the mucosal weight associated to groups and dates. however, ileal mucosal weight decreased from basal to final results when compared to jejunal mucosa (p= 0.02). the dna content increased from the initial to the final results (p <0.001) in both groups, though, this increase was greater in gl-gh animals (cg = 0.53 [95% ci, 0.44-0.62] g/cm-1 vs. gl-gh= 0.85 [95%ci, 0.76-0.94] g/cm-1; p<0.01), especially at the 14th day. ileal dna content was significantly greater than jejunal (p=0.01). there was a significant increase in the intestinal wall width and crypt depth in the control group (p<0.01). conclusion: gut adaptation after massive resection is improved with the combined use of glutamine and gh.

Acta Scientiarum : Education , 2011,
To Hadewijch the virtues were not inborn nor grew spontaneously, on the contrary, should be cultivated within each Christian, it was a matter of study, exercise. The Christian principles had to be constantly encouraged and practiced in order that women did not departed from Christ ideal that as a men was an example of love and virtues. In this sense the work of Hadewijch should be seen from its pedagogical and catechetical function that emphasized the moral behaviors that supported the beguines religiosity.

Escola Anna Nery , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-81452009000300018
Abstract: this is a descriptive and exploratory study. the study aimed to describe the perceptions of nursing professionals regarding the participation of doulas assisting women in labor. a qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews was utilized for this study. subjects included 11 nurse assistants and 5 nurses from an obstetric center's public maternity ward in the city of salvador in the state of bahia. the results illustrated three categories: from idea to the reality of the initiative "doulas in the delivery room;" benefits with their inclusion; and difficulties with their presence. it is clear that this initiative aims to fulfill the gap of a companion at the obstetric center of the institution. among the benefits found, it is relevant to note the replacement of a family member as well as the physical comfort given to the woman in labor. the difficulties of having a doula are concerned with their undefined role and the lack of clarity of their work limits. the interviewees recognize the importance of the work by doulas; however, they highlight problems due to the manner of their insertion in the service.
