Biochemical evaluation of a series of synthetic chalcone and hydrazide derivatives as novel inhibitors of cruzain from Trypanosoma cruzi

Abstract: chagas' disease, a parasitic infection widely distributed throughout latin america, is a major public health problem with devastating consequences in terms of human morbidity and mortality. the enzyme cruzain is the major cysteine protease from trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of american trypanosomiasis or chagas' disease, and has been selected as an attractive target for the development of novel trypanocidal drugs. in the present work, we describe the synthesis and inhibitory effects of a series of thirty-three chalcone and seven hydrazide derivatives against the enzyme cruzain from t. cruzi. most of the compounds showed promising in vitro inhibition (ic50 values in the range of 20-60 μm), which suggest the potential of these compounds as lead candidates for further development. twelve compounds have not been reported before, and four of them (7, 13, 16 e 18) are among the most potent inhibitors of the series.
Bacillus thuringiensis: fermentation process and risk assessment: a short review

Abstract: several factors make the local production of bacillus thuringiensis (bt) highly appropriate for pest control in developing nations. bt can be cheaply produced on a wide variety of low cost, organic substrates. local production results in considerable savings in hard currency which otherwise would be spent on importation of chemical and biological insecticides. the use of bt in brazil has been limited in comparison with chemical insecticides. although bt is imported, some brazilian researchers have been working on its development and production. fermentation processes (submerged and semi-solid) were applied, using by-products from agro-industries. as the semi-solid fermentation process demonstrated to be interesting for bt endotoxins production, it could be adopted for small scale local production. although promising results had been achieved, national products have not been registered due to the absence of a specific legislation for biological products. effective actions are being developed in order to solve this gap. regardless of the biocontrol agents being considered atoxic and harmless to the environment, information related to direct and indirect effects of microbials are still insufficient in many cases. the risk analysis of the use of microbial control agents is of upmost importance nowadays, and is also discussed.

Abstract: This paper discusses the theoretical and the political/institutional aspects which were considered responsible for the absolute marginalization of the interest in cinematic reception in lm studies in Brazil, such as: 1)the survival of Glauberianism as the theoretical and aesthetical canon; 2)the absence of political-academic wish to dialogue with the international theoretical and methodological output - such as cultural studies and cognitivism - which, appearing in the 1980s, oppose, in the eld of spectatorship, the modernist textualism typical of cinema studies in the 1970s; and 3) the hypertrophy and anticontextualism of the eld of lm analysis, preventing the look towards the actual spectator. At the end, as part of a movement of rupture with the present situation, the article presents ongoing research project, named “Discourses of the audience on Brazilian cinema”.

Abstract: the main objectives of this paper is to verify if there are differences between verbal agreement and non-agreement during the use of verbal system in written narrative by children who live in different sociocultural environments. in order to accomplish our objective, the students were divided in two groups of 52 children, one of them belonging to a public school and the other to a private one. each group wrote narratives and this research analyzed 1190 sentences extracted from that narratives (595 of each group). from the results obtained with quantitative and qualitative analysis, we verified that there are meaningful differences related to sociocultural aspects but there was not a great variation in verbal agreement on the writing production of the two groups.
Histological analysis of the effects of a static magnetic field on bone healing process in rat femurs

Abstract: A metallic device was developed, consisting of two stainless steel washers attached to the bone structure with titanium screws. Twenty-one Wistar rats (Rattus novergicus albinus) were used in this randomized experimental study. Each experimental group had five rats, and two animals were included as control for each of the groups. A pair of metal device was attached to the left femur of each animal, lightly touching a surgically created bone cavity. In the experimental groups, washers were placed in that way that they allowed mutual attraction forces. In the control group, surgery was performed but washers, screws or instruments were not magnetized. The animals were sacrificed 15, 45 and 60 days later, and the samples were submitted to histological analysis.On days 15 and 45 after the surgical procedure, bone healing was more effective in the experimental group as compared to control animals. Sixty days after the surgical procedure, marked bone neoformation was observed in the test group, suggesting the existence of continued magnetic stimulation during the experiment.The magnetic stainless steel device, buried in the bone, in vivo, resulted in increased efficiency of the experimental bone healing process.Bone neoformation is of primary importance for the success of dental clinical-surgical treatments. Much attention has been given to the research of new strategies to improve oral maxillofacial surgical techniques, as well as on the knowledge and application of biomaterials [1] an their possible chemical and physical consequences on the patients.Electromagnetic fields have been used for the stimulation of bone neoformation processes. Their effects are observed in the treatment of osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, osteotomized areas, integration of bone grafts and post-traumatic pseudarthrosis [2]. Abstract: the study of preservation process of the assai pulp through the application of hurdle technology was done by the application of the following preservation factors: reduction of ph at about 3.5 by the addition of 0.5% w/w of citric acid, thermal treatment (82.5°c for 1 min), reduction of the water activity by the addition of sucrose (10, 25 and 40% w/w) and addition of potassium sorbate (0.075 and 0.15% w/w). a full factorial experimental design was used in the elaboration of the formulations of the product, that were stored at 25°c in the absence of light for 5 months. the formulations 1, 2 and 8 were discarded sensorially before 3 months storage. besides, the formulations 2 (40%w/w of sucrose), 4 (40%w/w of sucrose and 0.15%w/w of potassium sorbate) and 5 (25%w/w of sucrose and 0.075%w/w of potassium sorbate) showed a good overall acceptability shelf-life time of 5 months.

Abstract: In the structure of the title compound, C21H30BrNOS, an important intermediate for the preparation of liquid crystal compounds, the saturated C12 chain shows a linear conformation while the benzene and thiazole rings are essentially coplanar [dihedral angle = 4.5 (4)°]. The crystal packing shows no significant intermolecular interactions.

Abstract: the purpose here was to determine inter-rater agreement in two tests that assess knee proprioception by goniometry, in a sample of 13 female university students (aged 23.8±6.4 years). proprioceptive accuracy was measured by means of the passive movement threshold detection test (t1), where leg is passively moved to target angle, and the sense of joint position test (t2), in which active movement to (previously passively reached) target angle is required. target angles were randomly selected; measurements were taken simultaneously by two (blinded) examiners at two identical goniometers placed at knee medial and lateral sides. when participants reported reaching the target angle, both evaluators recorded angle values actually reached. the difference (in absolute numbers) between target and reached angles was considered the"error value", which reflects proprioceptive acuity. inter-rater agreement was determined by kappa agreement test; kappa values found were 0.55 at t1 and 0.58 at t2, pointing to moderate agreement. since inter-rate agreement was moderate at both tests, it may be said that goniometry is of limited use for assessing knee proprioception.
