Excerpt from Triangulations: Narrative Strategies for Navigating Latino Identity

Abstract: Just as mariners use triangulation, mapping an imaginary triangle between two known positions and an unknown location, so, David J. Vázquez contends, Latino authors in late twentieth-century America employ the coordinates of familiar ideas of self to find their way to new, complex identities. Through this metaphor, Vázquez reveals how Latino autobiographical texts, written after the rise of cultural nationalism in the 1960s, challenge mainstream notions of individual identity and national belonging in the United States. In a traditional autobiographical work, the protagonist frequently opts out of his or her community. In the works that Vázquez analyzes in Triangulations, protagonists instead opt in to collective groups—often for the express political purpose of redefining that collective. Reading texts by authors such as Ernesto Galarza, Jesús Colón, Piri Thomas, Oscar “Zeta” Acosta, Judith Ortiz Cofer, John Rechy, Julia Alvarez, and Sandra Cisneros, Vázquez engages debates about the relationship between literature and social movements, the role of cultural nationalism in projects for social justice, the gender and sexual problematics of 1960s cultural nationalist groups, the possibilities for interethnic coalitions, and the interpretation of autobiography. In the process, Triangulations considers the potential for cultural nationalism as a productive force for aggrieved communities of color in their struggles for equality.
Jesús Colón and the Development of Insurgent Consciousness

Abstract: Jesús Colón's autobiographical A Puerto Rican in New York evidences a transitional stage in the intellectual development of oppositional consciousness in Puerto Rican communities. In particular, his work mediates Popular Front activism with the cultural nationalisms of the 1960s and 70s. Colón utilizes the insights of a nascent cultural studies to make a case for the historical and cultural legitimacy of Boricua communities on the mainland. Accordingly, the author examinescomplex cultural sites in order to understand how Puerto Ricans create movement spaces that contest racist ideologies during the post-World-War-Two period.

Abstract: las tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación y su aplicación en la formación y entrenamiento de los profesionales, mediante el elearning, supone una de las grandes revoluciones que caracterizan a la sociedad del conocimiento. sin embargo solo una estrategia global que encare todas sus facetas simultáneamente puede acompasar el desarrollo tecnológico y su implementación efectiva. en este artículo los autores subrayan en primer lugar la importancia del liderazgo en la fase actual de implantación y aceptación del elearning, y los punto claves sobre los que se debe de sustentar. en segundo lugar explican las características de las acciones formativas online, y su engarce en un campus virtual. en tercer lugar se explican las características tecnológicas del elearning. finalmente recalcan la necesidad de un emarket para asegurar que lo altos costes de una nueva metodología, son sostenibles.
Remote Interrogation of WDM Fiber-Optic Intensity Sensors Deploying Delay Lines in the Virtual Domain

Abstract: In this work a radio-frequency self-referencing WDM intensity-based fiber-optic sensor operating in reflective configuration and using virtual instrumentation is presented. The use of virtual delay lines at the reception stage, along with novel flexible self-referencing techniques, and using a single frequency, avoids all-optical or electrical-based delay lines approaches. This solution preserves the self-referencing and performance characteristics of the proposed WDM-based optical sensing topology, and leads to a more compact solution with higher flexibility for the multiple interrogation of remote sensing points in a sensor network. Results are presented for a displacement sensor demonstrating the concept feasibility.

A Polymer Optical Fiber Fuel Level Sensor: Application to Paramotoring and Powered Paragliding

Abstract: A low-cost intensity-based polymer optical fiber (POF) sensor for fuel level measurements in paramotoring and powered paragliding is presented, exploiting the advantages of the optical fiber sensing technology. Experimental results demonstrate that the best option can be performed by stripping the fiber at the desired discrete points to measure the fuel level as well as with a gauge-shape fiber bending. The prototype has a good linearity, better than 4% full scale (F.S.), and sensitivity around 0.5 V per bend are obtained. Hysteresis due to residual fluid at the sensing points is found to be less than 9% F.S.

Abstract: la educación médica tiene en el web learning, una herramienta que permite el acceso universal a la formación y al entreno. el web learning, supone también, un reenfoque y redimensionado de la educación en todas sus dimensiones incluyendo la tecnológica. todo lo anterior junto con las cuantiosas inversiones que supone la implantación del web learning, aconseja que la investigación para identificar el proceso óptimo de implementación y desarrollo, se convierta en uno de sus pilares de referencia. en este artículo se explicitan una serie de preguntas relativas a los diversos aspectos del web learning que a criterio de los autores deben de ser contestados a través de la investigación, así como aquellas metodologías científicas mas apropiadas a las preguntas formuladas. la revisión tanto bibliografía, como los libros de ponencias y comunicaciones de congresos nacionales, evidencia la ausencia casi total de investigación en este campo de la medicina, lo cual se agrava con la carencia de becas para financiar estos estudios. solo una estrategia global puede superar esta situación y promover la educación basada en la mejor evidencia.

Abstract: a laser, light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, is a device able to transform other energies into electromagnetic radiation with emission of light beams of different wavelengths. they amplify the light and produce coherent light beams, the frequency of which varies from infrared to x ray. stimulated emission, the process laser is based on, was described by a. einstein in 1917, but it was not until the decade of the '60s when the first laser process was observed in a ruby crystal. depending on the environment they use, lasers may be named as solid-state, gas, semiconductors or liquid. the possibility of uses for laser is almost unlimited, becoming a very valuable tool in biomedical sciences thanks to the various effects they produce when interacting with tissues (photovaporization, photodisruption, photocoagulation or photostimulation). for this reason, today, the use of lasers in the field of urology offers a wide range of possibilities, going from surgery for the treatment of obstruction, such as the fragmentation of a urinary stone or resection/ablation of prostatic tissue, to reconstructive surgery, such as tissue welding in vasovasostomy or urethral stenosis repair.

Abstract: we evaluated the efficacy and efficiency of the federal network of natural protected areas (npas) to represent the species richness of terrestrial mammals. we overlapped a 0.5° x 0.5° grid with data on species richness with the map of npas, to determine the proportion of unprotected species. we compared this with equivalent sets of cells, chosen randomly. in addition, through optimization we determined how many additional cells will complement the npas and how many cells will represent all species at least once. we found that nearly 1/5 of the total species, 1/3 of the endemics and 1/3 of the threatened species are unprotected. the sets of cells randomly chosen represent more species than the totality of grid cells with npas studied. the baja california peninsula, pacific slope, the sierra madre occidental, and the south of the country (oaxaca) concentrate the highest number of unprotected species. we found that to complement the grid cells with npas 25 additional cells are needed and that a set of 38 cells chosen optimally will be enough to represent all species at least one time. our results can help to improve the selection of new npas to gain in efficacy and efficiency in the representation of still unprotected species.
Detection of a new insect flavivirus and isolation of Aedes flavivirus in Northern Italy

Abstract: Background During recent years, numerous novel ‘insect flaviviruses’ have been discovered in natural mosquito populations. In a previous study we described the presence of flavivirus DNA sequences integrated in Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) populations from Northern Italy in 2007. Methods During 2008 we collected and tested Aedes females for flavivirus presence and developed phylogenetic analysis, virus isolation, electron microscopy studies and RNAse treatments. Results We detected a high prevalence of flavivirus in Ae. albopictus (77.5%). The phylogenetic analysis identified the insect flavivirus sequences as Aedes flavivirus (AEFV) recently described in Japan, and that may have been introduced in Italy travelling with the tiger mosquito. Some of these pools grew in C6/36 cells, producing cytopathic effects, and the RNase treatment results showed the presence of the detected sequences in RNA forms. Furthermore, we detected a new insect flavivirus in one pool of Aedes cinereus/geminus mosquitoes. Phylogenetic analysis of this virus shows that it forms a distinct cluster within the clade of insect flavivirus. Conclusions This is the first study to report a high prevalence, to describe the seasonal activity and an isolation of the insect flavivirus Aedes flavivirus in Europe. Moreover we describe the detection of a new insect flavivirus detected from Ae. cinereus mosquitoes from Italy. These flavivirus may be common, ubiquitous and diverse in nature and we discuss the implications of the insect flavivirus group in virus evolution and transmission.
