Submergence Tolerance in Irrigated and Rainfed Lowland Rice Varieties: Agro-Morphological Basis for Rice Genetic Improvement in Southern Benin  [PDF]

Abstract:
Objective: The study was carried out, on the rice perimeter of Southern Benin, to evaluate the response of irrigated and lowland rice varieties to the complete and partial submergence using agro-morphological traits. Method: Thus, 15 rice varieties were submerged in the field during 60 days according to split plot experimental design with two factors and three replications. Agro-morphological parameters such as plant height, number of tillers, the distance of internodes and the number of internodes were measured respectively at 13 days and 45 days. After harvest, some traits such as length, width and thickness of grains, panicle length, number of primary and secondary branches, the average number of empty grains and full grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight were recorded. Results: Very highly significant (P ≤ 0.0001) differences were identified between agro morphological parameters according to the type of submergence while the factor type of immersion has significant influence on the number of internodes at 45 days after transplanting (P ≤ 0.01). The submergence was not significant effect on tillering and length of internodes. Conclusion: The plant height, the weight of thousand grains and the average number of empty grains per panicle constitute key aspects and have been essential for evaluating tolerance to submergence in Benin.

Abstract: Economic Study of Small Scale Tomato Paste Production in Benin. Economic study of tomato paste was performed for two localities (Ketou and Dogbo) of high production of tomato in Benin. For a plant capacity of 10 tons of raw tomatoes per year, with tomato juice concentrated at 13% Natural Tomato Soluble Solids (NTSS) and 20.69% of material balance, the production cost of a glass-jar of 275 g (net weight) is 204.87 F and the profi tability at 15.54% at Ketou. In this locality, the break-even point is estimated at 471.08 kg of paste or 2.28 T of fresh tomato. On the other hand, at Dogbo where the production cost was higher (218.34 F), the profi tability is estimated at 8.4% and the break-even point at 683.65 kg of paste or 3.3 T of fresh tomato. In conditions of good management, the two units are profi table from the fi rst year. Optimisation of energy use in dehydration of tomato juice will enhance interest in small scale tomato paste production in Benin.

Abstract: Transanal intestinal evisceration is an extremely rare and dramatic digestive surgical emergency. The cases reported in the literature are few and concern much more elderly patients. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy admitted in very general poor condition to the emergency department, late for transanal evisceration complicating rectal prolapse that the parents tried to reduce. The fatal outcome of this case is probably related to strangulation and delay in consultation. We learn from this that parents should avoid inopportune prolapse reduction and early consultation.
Relationship Between Sewage Treatment Efficiency and Bacterial Community Diversity in an A/O MBR

Abstract: An Anoxic/Oxic Membrane Bioreactor (A/O MBR) was used to treat sewage. Five different working conditions were run to determine the optimal process parameters. Bacterial community structures in both anoxic and oxic tanks were analyzed using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The relationship between effluent water quality and bacterial community diversity was established. The experimental results indicated that, under the optimal parameters of hydraulic retention time (HRT) 12 h, sludge retention time (SRT) 10 d, reflux ratio of nitrified effluent 300%, and reflux ratio of sludge 100%, the A/O MBR removed COD, NH4+-N, and TN effectively and stably with the average removal rates of 96.4%, 99.1% and 75.8%, respectively. The bacterial communities varied markedly in both anoxic and oxic tanks during the sewage treatment experiment. Under a same working condition, the communities in both tanks were often similar with a similarity of more than 50%. The community diversity of the anoxic tank fluctuated depending on different working conditions, while the diversity of the oxic tank increased steadily along with the operation time. A positive correlation between the bacterial community diversity of the anoxic tank and the denitrification efficiency of the A/O MBR was established.

Abstract: Introduction: Diagnostic wanderings of acute appendicitis are responsible for serious complications or abusive appendectomies. Existing Clinico-biological scores are efficient. Objective: To determine the diagnostic efficiency of Fran?ois’ score in acute appendicitis. Methodology: over 10 months, all the patients admitted in the CHUD-Parakou Emergency Department for pain in the right iliac fossa had been examined by resident students who calculated Fran?ois’ score. After verification by the surgeon, patients were put into three categories: category 1 score ≥ 2; category 2, score between -6 and 2; category 3, score below -6. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated. Results: out of 54 patients selected (29 men and 25 women), 29 were classified as group 1; 19 as group 2 and 6 as group 3. An ultrasound was performed in all patients in group 2, and signs in favor of appendicitis were found in 12 patients. Of the 41 appendicectomies performed, the histologic analysis of 33 operative specimens found a pathological appendix. Sensitivity, specificity and negative predictive value per group were 100%. It has prevented almost in one every four patients (24.07%) an abusive appendectomy. Conclusion: This score would reduce diagnostic wanderings and target patient groups for imaging studies.

Abstract: The most general dynamic tendencies of the energy redistribution in the high-pressure region are considered. Their influence on the possible deviations from the kinetic conceptions, which is now generally accepted, is examined. In this way, the structural elements of an organic molecule that promote internal energy mobilization in the high-pressure region and, conversely, hamper it, are defined. The first of these elements reduces both the Arrhenius parameters of the unimolecular reactions while the second leads to the opposite results. Some well-known exceptions to existing kinetic theories, which find an explanation in the framework of these proposed concepts, is considered. The proposed concept is very general as distinct from the existing dynamic studies, which investigate more particular details of the separate bond behaviors. The proposed general concept can broaden the study of chemical kinetics.
Raising Engagement and Enhancing Learning: School Community Partnerships That Work for Students at Promise  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper reports on a pilot study that investigates the widely reported issue of underachievement of students from Culturally Linguistically and Economically Diverse (CLED) backgrounds. It involves 15 university education faculty student volunteers and over 40 students and their families in primary (elementary) schools situated in disadvantaged communities of Victoria whose students come from 40 different nationalities, speaking 36 languages and with 75 per cent of its student cohort coming from Non English Speaking Backgrounds. A partnership was formed to focus on the problem of CLED children’s disengagement from their academic learning. We focus on how a productive partnership between schools and a university impact on inclusive teaching and learning practices both at the school and the university level. We investigate whether such an intervention can have an impact on engagement levels and the learning and social outcomes of students from refugee, migrant and working class families. Privileging participant voice we analyze data from interviews, surveys and focus groups with students, teachers and parents to argue that such a program has the capacity to re-engage underachieving students at a minimal cost to the community as an alternative model to other expensive and unsuccessful intervention programs. We conclude that at the core of this successful program is the need for both participants to feel they are empowered in the process. We know that student outcomes can be enhanced when the students feel connected to and involved in their community. Through this project, the students have the opportunity to experience greater community engagement leading to improved school attendance and retention, as well as better academic outcomes.

Abstract: The variety of definitions of Fourier transforms can create confusion for practical applications. This paper examines the choice of formulas for Fourier transforms and determines the appropriate choices for geoscience applications. One set of Discrete Fourier Transforms can be defined that approximate Fourier integrals and provide transforms between sampled continuous functions in both domains. For applications involving transforms between a continuous function and a discrete function a second set of Discrete Fourier Transforms is needed with different scaling factors. Two classes of application are presented: those where either form of transforms can be used and those where it is necessary to use a particular transform to obtain the correct results.
