Determination of the somatotypes of Physical Education's freshmen students. 48 males and 59 females were measured through the Heath-Carter somatotype rating form. Afterwards, the results showed an endomorphic component to be predominant among females and the mesomorphic component among males. The results showed slight similarities between malei students when compared with other students from Brazilian and foreign universities. However, results for the females were similar when compared with the Brazilian universities'students, but when compared with foreign universities'data, the mean of somatotype component was significant. The heterogenety and some factors that may have contributed to this difference among females were analysed by the author.

Abstract: Determination of the characteristics of the growth and development of students of different socio-economic levels. Evaluation of 360 male children, from 11 to 16 years of age, who attend the public schools of the municipality of Londrina, Parana. Measurements of height, bodily weight, weight of fat and lean corporal mass, were taken. To determine the weight of fat, the measurement of the values of the cutaneous folds, following the standardization of Yuhasz, was utilized. The measured population was divided in two groups, classified according to socio-economic level as determined by the father's occupation, considering the criteria of Glass's table, as modified by Hutchinson. Comparing the results obtained in the group considered of low level and in that of high socio-economic level, statistically significant differences (P < 0,01) were verified for all of the variables studied. It was concluded, by the data obtained in this study, that the socio-economic aspect, together with other factors, can influence significantly the pattern of growth and physical development in children between the ages of 11 and 16.

Abstract: The present study was designed to determine the level of agreement between four widely used skinfold-thickness equations and body mass index-based prediction equations (%BFBMI) for evaluating body fat percentage in university students. A total of 431 subjects (174 females and 257 males) aged 18-30 years old were included in the study. Skinfoldthickness equations proposed by Jackson and Pollock, Durnin and Womersley, Petroski and Guedes and Guedes were included in the study. The %BFBMI was predicted using Deurenberg’s age-and-sex specifi c equation. For the assessment of agreement, the paired t test, intraclass correlation coeffi cients and Bland-Altman plots were computed for the correlation between predicted percentage body fat according to each skinfold-thickness equation and %BFBMI. The results showed that the mean values of percent body fat predicted by each skinfold-thickness equation and from body mass index did not differ signifi cantly. Intraclass correlation coeffi cients ranged from 0.463 to 0.612. The Bland-Altman analysis indicated that the mean differences were close to zero, especially in males, but demonstrated a limited individual capacity of agreement, with upper and lower confi dence limits at -13.5% and 1.0%, respectively. In conclusion, these data provide evidence that, although the values of percentage body fat predicted by each skinfold-thickness equation and using body mass index were similar at a group level, individual biases were sometimes exceptionally high. It is recommended that comparisons between percentage body fat predicted by different anthropometric methods be interpreted with caution.
