Nutrition Journal , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2891-11-37
Abstract: This case–control study assessed 20 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attending a pulmonary rehabilitation program. The group of subjects without COPD (control group) consisted of 20 elderly patients attending a university gym, patients of a private service and a public healthy care. Consumption of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) was determined by indirect calorimetry and used for calculating the resting energy expenditure and respiratory quotient. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were also measured. Percentage of body fat (%BF), lean mass (kg) and muscle mass (kg) were determined by bioimpedance. The fat free mass index (FFMI) and muscle mass index (MMI) were then calculated. The COPD group had lower BMI than control (p?=?0.02). However, WC, % BF, FFMI and MM-I did not differ between the groups. The COPD group had greater RQ (p?=?0.01), REE (p?=?0.009) and carbohydrate oxidation (p?=?0.002).Elderly patients with COPD had higher REE, RQ and carbohydrate oxidation than controls.

Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2012,
Abstract: Objective: To verify the relation of neck circumference and relativemuscle strength and cardiovascular risk factors in sedentary women. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 60 premenopausal women(33.9±9.1 years; 67.4±13.6kg; 1.57±0.6cm and 27.2±5.3kg/m2). Based on the neck circumference, the sample was divided into two groups: Group Circumference <35cm (n=27) and Group Circumference ≥35cm (n=33) to compare relative muscle strength and cardiovascular risk factors. The correlation between variables was tested by Pearson and Spearman correlations, with a significance level established at p<0.05. Results: The findings revealed that women with neck circumference ≥35cm presented higher values of body mass, waist circumference, body adiposity index, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin and volume of visceral fat when compared with the group with neck circumference <35cm. Additionally, the group with larger neck circumference presented lower values of relative strength. Conclusion: Neck circumference seems to be an important predictive factor of cardiovascular risk and of relative strength loss in middleaged sedentary women.
A Esquerda Contra a Política: organiza es guerrilheiras e renúncia à estratégia no período da luta armada
Darlan Montenegro

Abstract: semi hardwood cutting was colletecd in the medium portion of the 'ascolano 315' olive trees, prepared with 12 cm in length and four leaves, treated or not with 3000 mg l-1 of iba by five seconds. the experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, with a system of intermittent nebulization. the cutting was placed in propagation supports, containing perlite as a substrate. before the plantation of the cutting, organic fertilizers biofertilizante and nippoterra were applied in the proportion: 0, 20, 40 and 60 ml l-1. the products were applied in the experimental portions in a single dose. after 58 days, the percentage of cutting with callus, taken root, taken root and/or with callus, average number of roots and average length of the roots were evaluated. the 40 ml l-1 of biofertilizante gave the best results, with iba.
Lagrange as a Historian of Mechanics  [PDF]
Agamenon R. E. Oliveira
Advances in Historical Studies (AHS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ahs.2013.23016
Abstract: In the first and second parts of his masterpiece, Analytical Mechanics, dedicated to static and dynamics respectively, Lagrange (1736-1813) describes in detail the development of both branches of mechanics from a historical point of view. In this paper this important contribution of Lagrange (Lagrange, 1989) to the history of mechanics is presented and discussed in tribute to the bicentennial year of his death.
History of Two Fundamental Principles of Physics: Least Action and Conservation of Energy  [PDF]
Agamenon R. E. Oliveira
Advances in Historical Studies (AHS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ahs.2014.32008
Abstract: One of the aims most sought after by physics along the years has been to find a principle, the simplest possible, into which all natural phenomena would fit, and which would also allow the calculation of all past occurrences and principally future occurrences. Evidently, this is far from being reached and quite probably does not even exist. Nevertheless, an approximation to this ideal is always possible and the history of physics shows that some results in this direction have been achieved. Thus, the history of the principles of least action and conservation of energy presented in this paper explains the search for this ideal.
Charles-Augustin Coulomb—The Founder of Physiology and Ergonomics  [PDF]
Agamenon R. E. Oliveira
Advances in Historical Studies (AHS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ahs.2016.55017
Abstract: The memoir Sur la force des Hommes was published by Coulomb in 1778. It is an attempt to understand human work mechanically and is the first publication on physiology and ergonomics. The question introduced by Coulomb appears from a pragmatic point of view. He proposed to measure the quantity of action (mechanical work) that a man can expend in a day of work by different ways of applying force. To do this, Coulomb studied the old problem of human mechanical capacity, also studied by Theophilus Desagulliers (1683-1744) and Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1782). In this paper we examine and discuss Coulomb’s above-mentioned publication showing his pioneering approach (Coulomb, 2002).
