The Dichotomy in Degree Correlation of Biological Networks

Abstract: Most complex networks from different areas such as biology, sociology or technology, show a correlation on node degree where the possibility of a link between two nodes depends on their connectivity. It is widely believed that complex networks are either disassortative (links between hubs are systematically suppressed) or assortative (links between hubs are enhanced). In this paper, we analyze a variety of biological networks and find that they generally show a dichotomous degree correlation. We find that many properties of biological networks can be explained by this dichotomy in degree correlation, including the neighborhood connectivity, the sickle-shaped clustering coefficient distribution and the modularity structure. This dichotomy distinguishes biological networks from real disassortative networks or assortative networks such as the Internet and social networks. We suggest that the modular structure of networks accounts for the dichotomy in degree correlation and vice versa, shedding light on the source of modularity in biological networks. We further show that a robust and well connected network necessitates the dichotomy of degree correlation, suggestive of an evolutionary motivation for its existence. Finally, we suggest that a dichotomous degree correlation favors a centrally connected modular network, by which the integrity of network and specificity of modules might be reconciled.
Revisiting the variation of clustering coefficient of biological networks suggests new modular structure

Abstract: We analyzed a variety of biological networks and found that the commonly used signature of hierarchical modularity is actually the reflection of spoke-like topology, suggesting a different view of network architecture. We proved that the existence of super-hubs is the origin that the clustering coefficient of a node follows a particular scaling law with degree k in metabolic networks. To study the modularity of biological networks, we systematically investigated the relationship between repulsion of hubs and variation of clustering coefficient. We provided direct evidences for repulsion between hubs being the underlying origin of the variation of clustering coefficient, and found that for biological networks having no anti-correlation between hubs, such as gene co-expression network, the clustering coefficient doesn’t show dependence of degree.Here we have shown that the variation of clustering coefficient is neither sufficient nor exclusive for a network to be hierarchical. Our results suggest the existence of spoke-like modules as opposed to “deterministic model” of hierarchical modularity, and suggest the need to reconsider the organizational principle of biological hierarchy.The high relevance between functional organization and topological features has motivated the development of statistical measures to characterize cellular networks. Increasingly, these measures reveal that biological network organization is characterized by the power law of degree distribution, the concept of modularity and the degree correlations on connected nodes [1-3]. Networks with high modularity have dense connections between the nodes within same cellular functions but sparse connections between nodes in different functions. Abstract: The crude polysaccharide UPOJ was extracted by ultrasound from Ophiopogon japonicas and purified by DEAE-cellulose52 column and Sephadex G-150 gel column. Purified polysaccharide UPOJ-DS was obtained. The thermal characteristics of UPOJ-DS were studied by using the thermal analysis system Q1000DSC LNCS FACS Q600SDT. The heating rate was 10°C/min and the test temperature was 20°C ~ 800°C. The results showed that there were three large mass losses in the process of heating, in which the maximum weight loss rate was 66.68% at 220°C ~

Abstract:

Based on the space spherical symmetry of 3-dimensional and the translational symmetry of time and the uncertainty principle, a 4-dimensional space-time cylinder model of quarks and leptons is established. With this model, equations of the special relativity can be extended more perfectly, thereby achieving a unity of the special relativity and quantum mechanics in deeper level. New equations can not only interpret issues explained by old equations but also solve several important pending problems. For example, a formula to strictly calculate the coefficient ξ of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) is derived, to above 4 × 1019 eV UHECR protons the calculated |ξ| < 4.5 × 10-30, although there is the LIV effect it is too weak to change the GZK cutoff, which is consistent with observations of HiRes and Auger; Also, a relation formula between the Hubble constant and several basic constants is derived, thus theoretically calculated H0 = 70.937 km·s-1·Mpc-1, which is well consistent with the final observation result of HST Key Project. In addition, an unusual effect predicted by new equations can be experimentally tested in the electron storage ring; a preliminary experiment result has hinted its signs of existence.

Abstract: Superposition mapping (SM) is a modulation technique which loads bit tuples onto data symbols simply via linear superposition. Since the resulting data symbols are often Gaussian-like, SM has a good theoretical potential to approach the capacity of Gaussian channels. On the other hand, the symbol constellation is typically nonbijective and its characteristic is very different from that of conventional mapping schemes like QAM or PSK. As a result, its behavior is also quite different from conventional mapping schemes, particularly when applied in the framework of bit-interleaved coded modulation. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis is provided for SM, with particular focus on aspects related to iterative processing.

Abstract: The effect of Cu additions on discontinuous precipitation of AlZn alloy were studied with optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is found that the effect of addition of 2 at. pct Cu on cellular nucleation site is not remarkable, while the effect of aging temperature on cellular nucleation site of AlZn and AlZn-2Cu alloys is fairly obvious. The cell growth rate of discontinuous precipitation of AlZn alloy is remarkably accelerated with the addition of 2 at. pct Cu. The discontinuous precipitation microstructure of AlZn alloy is not apparently affected with the addition of 2 at. pct Cu and the cellular front is still fine microstructure of spinodal decomposition. The phase constituents consist of a fcc Al-rich phase, a hcp Zn-rich phase and a CuZn4 phase. The transformation rate of discontinuous precipitation of AlZn alloy is remarkably accelerated with the addition of 2 at. pct Cu.

Abstract: The effect of Cu addition on the spinodal decomposition of the Al-Zn alloy with symmetrical compositions has been investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis. It is found that the single fcc phase can be obtained in the AlZn alloy with the addition of 2 at. pct Cu after solution treatment at 400℃ and water quenching to room temperature.The modulation structure occurs in two types of alloys aged at room temperature for 30 min. The spinodal process remarkably slows down above or at the three phase equilibrium temperature, particularly at room temperature due to the addition of 2 at. pct Cu. The spinodal time increases by 20 times when aging at 300℃ and by more than 30 times when aging at room temperature.

Abstract: The top-seeded infiltration and growth process (TSIG) is very effective method for the preparation of YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) bulk superconductors. In order to improve the levitation force of the samples, a series of single domain YBCO bulk superconductors with different ratios of nanoscale Y2Ba4CuBiOy (YBi2411) inclusions in the solid phase pellet is successfully fabricated by the TSIG technique on the basis of previous research. In the present work, the results of YBCO bulk superconductors with YBi2411 and CeO2 (1 wt%) codoping system indicate that, the optimum doping of YBi2411 is 2 wt%, the size of Y211 particles is reduced compared with the samples without CeO2 doping; the largest levitation force is about 15 N obtained in the samples with optimum YBi2411, which is about two times higher than that of the sample without CeO2 doping. The results are very helpful for the fabrication of high quality single domain YBCO bulk superconductors.

Abstract:

With rising health issues among children and adolescents in America such as obesity and diabetes, getting physically active becomes ever more important. Yoga, as an ancient system of exercise, has a great potential to teach children to be mindful of factors that impact their health and improve their total well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived benefits of incorporating yoga-based activities into classroom teaching as a result of implementing the Yoga Ed. Tools for Teachers program. One hundred and three physical education and classroom teachers were trained by certified Yoga Ed. instructors for two days. These teachers, in turn, implemented the yoga-based activities for 5 - 15 minutes daily for a year. At the completion of this period, questionnaires from 550 parents and 661 students as well as 103 teachers were analyzed. Triangulation of the data provided solid evidence suggesting that yoga-based activities produced perceived benefits in such areas as mental well-being, social well-being, physical well-being, and daily behaviors. The data analyses also revealed barriers teachers encountered during implementation and what they did to overcome these barriers. The results were discussed with regard to their future implications for yoga programs appropriate for schools in the United States (US).
