Abstract: This study aims to assess the implementation of the Health, Aging and Quality of Life. The specific objectives were executed by conducting activities with the elderly through generative themes with an emphasis on health, aging and quality of life; evaluation of the experience of older people in Unity Family Health with Popular Education; analyzing the evolution of indicators of health and quality of life of elderly patients after two years and ascertaining the effectiveness of Popular Education in the elderly group in the Family Health Unit. This is an exploratory study approved by the Ethics and Research Committee UFPB/CCS, number 0598/08 held on Primary Health Care. The project consists of two lines of integrated activities: Group Active Ageing (GEA), which brings together seniors for addressing issues related to healthy aging and the Multidimensional Health Assessment and Quality of Life through the WHOQOL-BREF. The activities were built in fortnightly meetings from the dialogue where experiences are shared and collective needs. Thus, relevant topics were suggested for the group: guidelines on physical activity, nutrition, chronic disease prevention, self-esteem, among others, and group dynamics as body stretching, stretching exercises, respiratory, metabolic and relaxation. The observed results are the very satisfactions group, reported through testimonies and translated by the enthusiasm and diligence in participation. This project promoted a better bio-psycho-social development of the elderly, reinforcing its identity by promoting and facilitating the expression of their potential positive and arousing them to a better future life prospects and community socialization feelings.

Acta Scientiarum : Health Sciences , 2009,
The adrenal gland plays a crucial role in the neuroendocrine response, especially in situations where homeostasis is disturbed. In the neoplastic cachexia process, there is homeostasis impairment by nutritional and metabolic alterations of advanced-stage cancer, involving hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis response. In thisassignment, an experimental model of cachexia induced by Walker-256 tumor was performed in Wistar rats. Animals (n=4) were sacrificed 10 days after inoculation of tumor cells, and the adrenal glands were excised. The RNA was isolated for the study of gene expression related to the steroidogenesis control by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Data analysis showed a significant reduced expression of MC2R (melancortin type 2 receptor), 3 HSD I (3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type I) and TSPO (translocator protein) genes in animals with neoplastic cachexia (P=0.037, 0.0097 and 0.052, respectively), revealing adrenal cortex failure.

Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-06832008000500005
Abstract: considering the importance of understanding the water status of pedological covers for studies of prevention and containment of erosive processes, this study was conducted on a slope with a pedological system composed of red latossol (oxisol)/red argisol (ultisol) derived from caiuá sandstone, on an experimental farm of the universidade estadual de maringá, cidade gaúcha, in northwestern paraná state. after a detailed morphologic description of the pedologic system, infiltration experiments were carried out in the main diagnostic horizons and the respective transitions of six soil profiles along the slope. the pattern of water dynamics in the latosolic cover is different in the surface and subsurface. over the course of time, the surface horizons ap, ab and/or ba have alternating humidity conditions, sometimes more humid and sometimes drier, according to the rain distribution and intensity. in deeper layers of the bw horizon the water conditions depend on the vertical and lateral water movement, and are therefore not directly related to the atmospheric variations, as occur on the surface. in the podzolic cover a vertical drainage blockage was observed in the top of bt horizon, generating above it (horizon ae) a more constantly humid zone. in general, unlike in the latosols, humidity and dryness do not alternate in the surface horizons of the argisol. as a result the argisols are constantly more humid than latosols due to lateral water flow from upslope.

Abstract: the use of cover crops is important for the agricultural crop and soil management in order to improve the system and, consequently, to increase yield. therefore, the present study analyzed the effect of crop residues of black oat (avena strigosa schreb.) (bo) and a cocktail (co) of bo, forage turnip (raphanus sativus l.) (ft) and common vetch (vicia sativa l.) (v) on the emergence speed index (esi), seedling emergence speed (ses) plant height and soybean yield in different intervals between cover crop desiccation with glyphosate 480 (3 l ha-1) and brs 232 cultivar sowing. plots of 5 x 2.5 m with 1 m of border received four treatments with bo cover crops and four with co as well as a control for each cover crop, at random, with five replications. the plots were desiccated in intervals of 1, 10, 20 and 30 days before soybean seeding. the harvest was manual while yield was adjusted to 13% of moisture content. the experimental design was completely randomized with splitplots and means compared by the scott and knott test at 5% of significance. the results showed that co of cover crops can be recommended for soybean to obtain a more vigorous seedling emergence, from 10 days after cover crop desiccation.

Abstract: The no-tillage system management is considered as an agricultural system very close to sustainability, since it causes less impact to the environment. The crops rotation, when well managed, includes the use of green manure; and leguminous are included in this system as they bring a number of benefits. This context, the study aimed tested leguminous as cover plants on soil with a no-tillage system regarding the growth, yield and maize seeds quality. This decision-making looks for alternatives that contribute for the agroecosystem sustainability, since they allow rational adoption of green manure in production units. The experiment was carried out in the field with leguminous species dwarf mucuna beans, dwarf pigeon pea and stylosanthes, sown in October 2007, in 4 x 5 m plots, with five replications. At 90 days after the cover crops sowing, the leguminous plants were grazed and corn plants were sown 15 days after grazing on waste. The plants heights were determined during the culture development. At the laboratory, after harvest, the productivity and physiological quality of seeds were determined. The experimental design was completely randomized and the averages were compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% of significance. At 60 days after the maize crop sowing, the treatments with dwarf mucuna beans and dwarf pigeon pea showed higher heights. The other analyzed parameters did not differ among themselves, showing that the treatments not interfere on the maize crop. Actually, it is an alternative to the integrated management of species concerning the summer green manure and crop rotation in no-tillage system.

Castro, Renata Rodrigues Teixeira de;Serra, Salvador Manoel;Nóbrega, Antonio Claudio Lucas da;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0066-782X2000000900002
Abstract: objective: parasympathetic dysfunction is an independent risk factor in individuals with coronary artery disease, and cholinergic stimulation is a potential therapeutical option. we determined the effects of pyridostigmine bromide, a reversible anticholinesterase agent, on electrocardiographic variables of healthy individuals. methods: we carried out a cross-sectional, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. we obtained electrocardiographic tracings in 12 simultaneous leads of 10 healthy young individuals at rest before and after oral administration of 45 mg of pyridostigmine or placebo. results: pyridostigmine increased rr intervals (before: 886±27 ms vs after: 1054±37 ms) and decreased qtc dispersion (before: 72±9ms vs after: 45±3ms), without changing other electrocardiographic variables (pr segment, qt interval, qtc, and qt dispersion). conclusion: bradycardia and the reduction in qtc dispersion induced by pyridostigmine may effectively represent a protective mechanism if these results can be reproduced in individuals with cardiovascular diseases.
