Population structure of Eupemphix nattereri (Amphibia, Anura, Leiuperidae) from Central Brazil

Abstract: this study reports on 156 specimens of the amphibian eupemphix nattereri, a widely distributed leiuperid, obtained from 11 municipalities of central brazil. the extent of genetic variation was quantified by determining the mean number of alleles per locus and the proportion of polymorphic loci. an analysis of molecular variance (amova) was performed on the random amplified polymorphic dna (rapd) haplotypes. the genetic distances obtained by calculating pairwise fst among local samples were used to determine population relationships using the unweighted pair-group method (upgma) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nmds). the cophenetic correlation was calculated to confirm agreement between the genetic matrix and the unweighted pair group method with averages (upgma) dendrogram. to determine if genetic distances were correlated to geographical distances we constructed pairwise genetic distance and geographical distance matrices and compared them using the mantel test. the amova results indicated significant genetic differences (p < 0.001) between e. nattereri populations, representing 69.5% of the within population genetic diversity. the mantel test showed no significant correlation (r = 0.03; p = 0.45) between the genetic and geographical distance matrices. our findings indicate that the genetic variation of e. nattereri populations was randomly distributed in geographic space and that gene flow for this species is probably structured at spatial scales smaller than those between our samples

Abstract: Introdu o: O melasma caracteriza-se por máculas hipercr micas adquiridas,principal-mente na face,que atingem frequentemente as mulheres,com verdadeira incidência des-conhecida.O objetivo do tratamento é o controle da doen a,e várias op es s o dispo-níveis.O índice de área e gravidade do melasma - MASI é medida útil na avalia o clí-nica do melasma,e o Melasma Quality of Life Scale - MELASQoL,instrumento capaz deverificar objetivamente o impacto na qualidade de vida dos pacientes.Objetivo: avaliar,através do MASIe MELASQoL,o efeito do peeling de ácido lácticoem pacientes portadores de melasma.Métodos: 33 pacientes portadoras de melasma,predominantemente do fototipo IV,foram submetidas a peelings seriados de ácido láctico 85% (solu o hidroalcolica,pH=3,5).Foram realizadas avalia o clínica,através do MASI,e avalia o de impacto na qualidadede vida,através do MELASQoL,pré e pós-tratamento.Resultados: observou-se redu o significativa de ambos os índices após tratamento,tendo sido de sete pontos a queda média do MASI.N o foi observada correla o entre avaria o do MASIe do MELASQoL,denotando que a melhora clínica nem sempre cor-responde ao grau de expectativa das pacientes em rela o ao tratamento.Conclus es: o peeling de ácido láctico alia efetividade no tratamento do melasma combom perfil de seguran a.

Abstract: the flea ctenocephalides felis felis is a parasite that causes allergic dermatitis and also may transmit etiologic agents to domestic animals and humans. this study investigated by scanning electron microscopy the development of entomopathogenic fungi on flea cuticle. fleas were exposed to conidia (108 ml-1) of metarhizium anisopliae (isolate 959) or beauveria bassiana (isolate 986). following standard protocols for electron microscopy, the specimens were prepared 2, 15, 26 and 96 h after infection. the micrography revealed that 2 h after fungus exposure, conidia attachments encompassed the entire flea cuticle, especially on abdominal intersegmental membranes. the emergence of germ tubes and appressoria formation occurred at 15 h, thickening and branching of hyphae on the flea cuticle was noted at 26 h. therefore, both of these fungal isolates were able to develop on cuticular surfaces of c. f. felis.
Inheritance of tolerance to flooded soils in maize

Abstract: Maize could be an excellent option for crop rotation in flooded areas in southern Brazil. There are, however,few studies on the genetic basis of tolerance to flooding in maize. The objective of this study was to determine the inheritanceof this tolerance based on plant and root dry matter of young maize plants. Maize lines were crossed to form three populationsin the F1, F2, and backcross generations. Tolerance to flooding was assessed over two years in a greenhouse. The performanceof the generations showed the presence of heterosis. The variances in the segregating generations were higher than in the fixedgenerations throughout, indicating genetic variability for plant and root dry matter. The frequency distribution of F2 suggestedthat tolerance to flooding is controlled by many genes of complementary effect.

Abstract: in southern brazil, corn could be an alternative for cultivation in flooded areas. however, the development of genotypes tolerant to flooding is fundamental to make this option economically feasible. the objective of this paper was to determine the general and specific combining ability and reciprocal effect for flooding tolerance in corn genotypes. the analysis was based on a diallel cross among four inbreds: two flooding tolerant (ct954280 and ct954330) and two sensitive inbreds (ct966200 and ct966208). the experiment was conducted in 2000 and 2001 under greenhouse conditions at embrapa clima temperado, pelotas, rs. root dry matter, plant dry matter, plant high, root length, and leaf chlorophyll content were measured. genetic variability among the inbreds was detected. both additive and non-additive effects were important in the determination of the inheritance of flooding tolerance in corn. the correct choice of the female parent is fundamental for tolerant hybrids production, since maternal effects were relevant. among the analyzed genotypes, the inbred ct954330 presented the highest gca and may be indicated as a preferential progenitor in crossings that aim to increase flooding tolerance.

Abstract: No sul do Brasil, a cultura do milho pode ser uma alternativa de cultivo para áreas de várzea; entretanto, o desenvolvimento de genótipos tolerantes ao encharcamento é condi o fundamental para viabilizar economicamente esta op o. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar a capacidade geral e específica de combina o e os efeitos recíprocos para tolerancia ao encharcamento do solo de genótipos de milho. A análise foi baseada em um cruzamento dialélico envolvendo quatro linhagens: duas tolerantes ao encharcamento do solo (CT954280 e CT954330) e duas sensíveis (CT966200 e CT966208). O trabalho experimental foi realizado durante os anos de 2000 e 2001 em casa de vegeta o localizada na Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas, RS. As variáveis analisadas foram matéria seca da raiz, matéria seca da parte aérea, estatura de planta, comprimento de raiz e conteúdo de clorofila na folha. Os resultados demonstraram a existência de variabilidade genética entre os genótipos estudados, sendo que ambos os efeitos aditivos e n o aditivos foram de importancia na determina o da heran a da tolerancia ao encharcamento em milho. A escolha do genitor feminino é fundamental para a obten o de híbridos tolerantes, uma vez que o efeito materno observado foi elevado. Dentre os dois genótipos tolerantes analisados, a linhagem CT954330 foi a que apresentou a maior CGC e pode ser indicada como genitor preferencial em cruzamentos que visem incrementar a tolerancia ao encharcamento.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to verify the influence of different types of straw (maize and lablab) and soil management on evolving co2 and n mineralization. a dystrophic clayey dark-red latosol under cerrado from the region of sete lagoas, mg, brazil, was cultivated during five years with no-tillage, disc-plow and moldboard-plow. soil samples (0-20 cm) were incubated at 25oc during 55 days, with and without n fertilizer applied at the beginning and 25 days afterwards. as a general rule, the maize straw had higher rates of evolved co2 than the lablab (935 e 764 mg co2 g-1 soil, respectively). the type of straw influenced the amount of co2 evolved more than the type of soil management did. nitrogen addition increases the rate of co2 evolved only when applied at the beginning of the incubation period. the n availability and the duration of the immobilization are modified by the c/n ratio and by the type of soil management.
Morphometric and genetic differentiation among populations of Eupemphix nattereri (Amphibia, Anura, Leiuperidae) from central Brazil

Abstract: to assess genetic structure and phenotypic diversity of eupemphix nattereri steindachner, 1863, morphometric and molecular analyses were carried out for nine populations from the state of goiás. a total of 11 morphometric traits were evaluated and genetic information was estimated using rapd markers. genetic and phenotypic distances were determined as a function of geographical origin. correlation among genetic, morphometric, micro, and macroenviromental were analyzed by the mantel test. genetic data indicated high levels of genetic diversity (φst= 0.3) among the nine populations. mantel tests did not reveal a significant positive correlation between genetic and geographical distances, indicating that locally geographical populations were not genetically similar, even in distances smaller than 50 km. discriminant analysis on 11 morphometric measurements showed a high divergence among the nine populations. however, a marginally significant correlation (p=0.08) between genetic and morphometric distances was found. the observed correlation was not causal in terms of the relationship between phenotype and genotype, but indicated common spatial structures. thus, our results suggest that isolation-by-distance processes may explain population divergence in eupemphix nattereri.

Abstract: the multiform erythema appears as a systemic disease where skin and the mucous membranes have participation in relation to some factors such as bacterial or viral infections and in particular the drugs administration, analgesics and antibiotics in general. the aim of present paper was the presentation of case of big multiform erythema triggering by antimicrobials. authors present the case of a male patient aged 29 with appearance of ulcerous bullous-vesicular lesions in lips, gums, tongue and genital mucosa under treatment with 400 mg norfloxacin due to urinary tract infection for a week. we made support treatment using mouthwashes for oral hygiene and corticoids ointment for ulcer protection, antihistaminics and nutritional guiding of a hypercaloric and hyperprotein liquid diet. this syndrome is characterized as an acute bullous eruptive process involving the patient's quality of life and there are not specific laboratory tests thus its diagnosis must to be based on a highly detailed review of anamnesis and the clinical findings.
