Abstract: the objective of this study was to estimate the richness and the diversity of fruit tree species cultivated in boa vista's home gardens, as well as to determine what species the local urban population prefers. two neighborhoods that originated during the city's expansion in 1982 were sampled: (1) best - bairro dos estados (north zone) and (2) basa - bairro asa branca (west zone). seven hundred and twenty-two home gardens were surveyed in best (march 6 to 22, 2004), and 339 in basa (april 7 to july 1, 2004). thirty-six species (19 botanical families) were observed in best, and 37 (20 families) in basa, totaling 43 species (20 families). thirty species (69.8%) in 19 families (95%) occurred in both neighborhoods, suggesting common fruit preferences. the three largest indices of preference value (ivp) were coconut (cocos nucifera l. - best: 19.4% and basa: 20.5%), mango (mangifera indica l. - best: 14.9% and basa: 22.5%) and rose-apple (syzygium malaccence (l.) merr. & l.m. perry - best: 10.5% and basa: 10.1%). all of them are exotic (originating in southeast asia) and together had ivps of 44.9% (best) and 53.0% (basa). these results suggest that the cultivation of fruit trees in the home gardens of boa vista shows a pattern that concentrates choices in a few non-amazonian species that are traditionally preferred because of their successful fruit production.

Abstract: intravenous therapy (ivt) is an important item among the necessary technologies for the survival of high-risk new-born babies. however, it is also a source of pain, stress and risk of serious complications. this article aims to assess the meanings of ivt as ascribed by care teams and to discuss the reflection of such meanings on the attention to new-born babies. the article, with a theoretical referential in cultural anthropology, presents an ethnographic case study carried out in a neonatal intensive care unit of municipal administration in rio de janeiro. subjects were nine nurses, four doctors, and three nurse assistants. data collection was carried out with a semi-structured interview and participative observation. the qualitative analysis was performed using the method of interpretation of the senses. meanings, interweaved with the cultural network, showed that ivt practice is often reduced to peripheral puncture techniques, bringing on a series of complications for high risk new-born babies and intense emotional waste for the professional team and the family. re-signification of ivt practice will only be possible with a critical analysis of the cultural patterns it is now based on.

Gomes, Maria Angélica da Concei??o;Suzuki, Marina Satika;Cunha, Maura da;Tullii, Cristiane Ferrante;
Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S2179-975X2011000200007
Abstract: aim: this study aimed to investigate the effects of naci and na2so4 salts on ca, ci, k, mg n, p, s and na content as well as on the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b and carotenoids), proline content and on the foliar morphology of salvinia auriculata aubl. methods: the plants were collected in jacu lagoon, located in the north of rio de janeiro state, and after a five-day-acclimation period, experiments were performed in the greenhouse with 0, 100, 200 mm concentrations of naci and na2so4 salts and the usual techniques for light and electron microscopy. results: after seven days of experiment, a decrease in the content of ca2+, k+, mg2+, p, n ions as well as in the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a,b and carotenoids) in salvinia auriculata under saline treatments was observed. the proline content showed an upward tendency as compared to the control. under transmission electron microscopy, it was observed that, on the foliar limb, there was a membrane system disorder, mainly of chloroplasts, with higher presence of starch grains of plant cells subjected to salinity. under scanning electron microscope, the integrity of trichomes and foliar limb cells of salvinia auriculata subjected to the control treatment as well as the changes caused by salinization on the surface of cells were observed. conclusion: as for all the salinization effects evaluated, it was noticed that the increase in na2so4 salt concentration resulted in higher morphological and nutritional alterations in the floating aquatic macrophyte, salvinia auriculata.

Abstract: the michael addition of ethyl acetoacetate 1 to chalcone 2 under solid/liquid phase transfer catalysis (sl-ptc), solvent free, afforded michael adduct 3 and an annulated compound 4 in good yield. the cyclic compound 4 was obtained in the majority via an annulation process of the michael adduct 3. the proportion of 4 in the ratio of 3/4 was dependant on the structure of the quaternary ammonium cation. the results were interpreted on the basis of the organophilicity and accessibility of the catalysts as well as by invoking a 6-membered ring transition state for the formation of 4 due to the chelation level with q+.
