The Establishment of Functional Play Behaviors in Children with Autism: Implications for School Inclusion  [PDF]

Abstract: Research on evidence-based methodologies is conducted to expand skills of children with autism. Among the skills, which might be considered important for development, the literature emphasizes functional play. In many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the repertoire related to play is impaired and specialized treatment may address the issue by designing individualized procedures based on one-to-one interactions. Discrete trial teaching may help establishing such repertoire in a structured setting and generalization goals must be delineated to increase the likelihood with which the learned skills will emerge in new environments, such as the classroom, the home and other natural contexts. Thus, it is important that skills be shown in places where other people participate. Principles from Educational Psychology are also relevant in the advisory process to professionals related, for example, to school settings in order to favor inclusion of children with ASD to school routine and the relationship with peers. People related to these educational environments should become knowledgeable of evidence-based procedures in order to increase, with their help, generalization of previously established skills in more structured contexts. This paper assessed the efficacy of a structured intervention with functional play activities in three 4-year-old children with autism or suspect. A binder with pictures depicting actions with the components of each of four or two toy sets was used as resource to orient the target-responses of the study. Correct responses, under the control of pictures, produced access to tokens exchangeable for preferred items. Errors were corrected. Errorless performance occurred for all children with responses under the control of pictures for all and generalization with two toy sets for one. The results extended those from the previous literature and, even though the generalization to other environments such as school was not directly measured, the implications of the research to inclusion practices in the school context and development of verbal behavior were discussed.
In situ dry matter and fiber fraction degradability of the Mineir?o stylos

Abstract: this research evaluated, using the in situ technique, the dry matter and fiber fraction degradability of the mineir?o stylo (stylozanthes guianensis). the nylon bag method was used for the degradability assay, with two incubations in rumen-cannulated adult female cows. in each incubation, 25 samples of 7.0 g each were used. the samples were collected at 0, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 hours. the experiment was conducted according to a randomized blocks design and data were submitted to analysis of variance. the maximum effective degradability was obtained in the 2% passage rate. for the 5% passage rate the mineir?o stylo showed effective degradation of 75.70% for dry matter, 59.01% for neutral detergent fiber and 76.81% for acid detergent fiber. the digestibility achieved by the dry matter and fibrous fraction from mineir?o was considered high. these results, coupled with the low lag time found reveal the forage potential of the cultivar.

Abstract: the study was carried out with the objective to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of the wheat bran (wb) with or without supplementation of an enzymatic complex (ec) on the performance of semi-heavy hens in the egg-production phase. a total of 288 lohmann brown pullets were used, distributed to a completely randomized design in 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, composed by four wb levels (0, 3, 6 and 9%) in the ration and enzymatic complex supplementation (0 or 100g/100 kg diet), with eight treatments and six replicates of six birds. the enzymatic complex contained the enzymes b-galactosidase, galactomananase, xilanase and a-glucanase. feed intake, final body weight, egg production, egg weight, egg mass, egg mass feed conversion or egg dozen feed conversion was not affected by wb inclusion in the diets. egg shell specific gravity deteriorated as wb levels increase in the diets. none of the characteristics was affected by the enzymatic complex supplementation, except for egg weight, that improved from 62.74 to 64.28 g. then, the use up to 9.0% of wheat bran in the ration is recommended for semi-heavily chickens in the production phase. the supplementation of a-galactosidase, galactomannanase, xylanase and a-glucanase improve egg weight.

Abstract: the knowledge of the terminal velocity of a product is of fundamental importance in the development of separation machines using airflows. the behavior of the values of the terminal velocity of coffee fruits (varieties catuaí and hybrid timor) was investigated in this work as a function of following parameters: (a) maturation level of the coffee at the harvesting ("green" and "cherry" fruits); (b) harvesting time; (c) variety; (d) moisture content of the fruits and (e) number of fruits in the sample used for the determinations of the terminal velocity. analysis of the results showed that the values of the terminal velocity were significantly influenced by the moisture content of product, fruit maturation level and size of the samples used in the determinations. however, the harvesting time and the fruit variety did not present as important parameters in the terminal velocity determinations. functional relationships among dimensionless parameters, using dimensional analysis and the buckingham pi theorem were also obtained and presented in this work. these relationships may be used to estimate the terminal velocity of one fruit when experimental data from the fluctuation velocity of samples with a larger number of fruits are known.

Abstract: scientific development allows us to work today with gas at temperatures far below the 10-6 k . these gases are obtained by optical cooling techniques and need to be characterized for their thermodynamic properties. among these properties is the temperature measurement. we show in a tutorial how low temperatures are measured using techniques called time of flight. these techniques combine basic knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, among other topics conventionally studied in the basic physics course.

Geochemical and structural characterization of the Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite: neoproterozoic post-collisional shoshonitic magmatism within transcurrent shear zone, Quitéria region, Southernmost Brazil

Abstract: The Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite is located in the Eastern portion of the Sul-rio-grandense shield. It forms one ENE-WSW elongate body of approximately 4 km2 within a sinistral strike slip shear zone. The rocks were originally considered as part of the Arroio dos Ratos Complex, but they were recently mapped as a separate unit because igneous textures are widely preserved and they are intrusive in the gneissis complex rocks. The Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite is thus a porphyritic horblende-biotite granodiorite in a mafic-rich (M’ ~ 20), medium-grained matrix. The magmatic foliation is marked by the shape alignment of feldspar megacrystals and mafic minerals. A solid-state, mylonitic structure is well-developed mainly near the contacts. Leucocratic veins are found both concordant and discordant to the main foliation, and they may give rise to a composite banding within high-strain zones, together with elongate mafic microgranular enclaves and synplutonic dykes of tonalitic to dioritic composition. The mylonitic foliation trends EW to ENE-WSW with medium to steep dip, and contains a shallow plunging stretching lineation, which indicates a transcurrent kinematic for this shear zone. Structural evidences, such as the parallelism and progressive evolution of mylonitic foliation relative to the magmatic one, as well as the elongated form of granodioritic bodies and the concordant character of planar structures with the ENE shear zone, are interpreted as an indication of syntectonic emplacement. Moreover, the absence of metamorphic foliation reworked by mylonitic shows that the Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite registers only one phase of deformation, which would have occurred during their emplacement. Thus, we have concluded that the Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite has no relation with the EW transversal event, and low dip angle responsible for the deformation of Arroio dos Ratos Complex, but is linked to the transcurrent event of Dorsal de Cangu u Shear Zone. The structural and compositional features of Cruzeiro do Sul Granodiorite magmatism are consistent with its post-collisional character, and the shoshonitic affinity is given by its high Sr contents, regular rare earth element chondrite-normalized patterns and the abundance of light rare earth regarding the heavy rare earth elements. Patterns of trace elements with enrichment in Ba and Rb, and impoverishment of High-Field Strength in relation to Large Ion Lithophile Elements is also an important feature of the rocks of shoshonitic affinity. Abstract: this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of the wheat bran (wb) in the ration on egg brown chicken (lohmann brown) performance in the growing phase 1 (7 to 19 week of age) and growing phase 2 (15 to 19 week of age) and its residual effects on initial egg production. one hundred-sixty chickens were allotted to a completely randomized design with four level of wb in the ration: 0 (control), 10, 20 and 30%, that resulted in four treatments, with five replicates of eight birds in the growing phase 1. at the 14th week, the birds were transferred to galvanized wire cages and reallocated in six replicates of six birds each. a total of 144 birds were used and, randomly, four birds per treatment were discarding per treatment, constituting the growing phase 2. the addition of the wb linearly decreased the final body weight and the weight gain, resulting in decreasing of 1.15 g and 0.0 3g, respectively for each 1% of wb inclusion in the ration. water intake show a quadratic effect and increased in absolute values with the addition of wb from 0 to 30%. the birds age at the first egg production and egg weight increased 0.6 day and 0.22 g, respectively for each 1% of wb in the ration. the inclusion of wb reduces chickens growth rate, delays posture starting and improves egg initial weight when compared to corn and soybean meal based diets.

Abstract: the experiment was carried out to determine the optimum inclusion level of dried egg powder (degg) in the pre-initial and growing rations of broilers. male cobb-500 chicks (n= 1,152) with initial live weight of 43.46 ± 0.23 g were housed in cages of 1,0 × 1,5 m. a completely randomized design with four rations 0, (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of degg), each one with 18 replications of 16 birds. isoproteic and isoenergetic rations were used, with 21.9% cp and 2,950 kcal amen from 1 to 7 days old and 20.9% cp and 3,000 kcal amen from 8 to 21 days old. egg contents were dried at 55oc for 72 hours and were negative for salmonella spp. dried egg powder inclusion levels showed a quadratic effect on feed intake, live weight, weight gain and feed conversion. weight gain was obtained with the use of 0.53% dried egg powder in the ration in the pre-starter and 0.73% in the initial growth phase.
