Optimization of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Salt for Lipid Accumulation of Microalgae: Towards the Viability of Microalgae Biodiesel  [PDF]

Abstract:
In recent years, microalgae biodiesel has attracted expressive attention and investment, once it was considered a potential resource for energy. Although the wide use of microalgae biodiesel is restricted by its high production cost. For cost-efficient and sustainable production of biodiesel from microalgae, a proper understanding of the variables and their impacts on physiology of the strains is required. In this study, a simple factorial design 23 was used to find optimal conditions for the cultivation of Ankistrodesmus sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. in batch culture. The three components considered were nitrate, phosphate and sodium chloride, used to assess the metabolic versatility of the strains in brackish conditions. The results showed that culture medium with 0.04 g·L?1 nitrate, 0.01 g·L?1 phosphate and 5.0 g·L?1 sodium chloride resulted to be the most effective condition to growth and fatty acids accumulation. Using this optimal condition, Ankistrodesmus sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. increased in 2.1 and 2.4 folds their fatty acids yield, respectively. Importantly, this protocol reduced 75% of the nitrate and phosphate concentrations of the original medium (ASM-1). Additionally, fatty acids analysis found that these strains were mainly constituted of C16-C18, in accordance with the requirements for biodiesel production. The simple factorial design applied here proved to be an important tool towards a better understanding of synergistic effects of tested factors on microalgae metabolism, and the resulting information could be used effectively to improve microalgae cultivation.

Abstract: Global increases in atmospheric CO2 and climate change are drawing considerable attention to identify sources of energy with lower environmental impact than those currently in use. Biodiesel production from microalgae lipids can, in the future, occupy a prominent place in energy generation because it represents a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Several species of microalgae produce large amounts of lipids per biomass unit. Triacylglycerol is the fatty acid used for biodiesel production and the main source of energy reserves in microalgae. The current literature indicates that nutrient limitations can lead to triacylglycerol accumulation in different species of microalgae. Further efforts in microalgae screening for biodiesel production are needed to discover a native microalgae that will be feasible for biodiesel production in terms of biomass productivity and oil. This revision focuses in the biotechnological potential and viability of biodiesel production from microalgae. Brazil is located in a tropical region with high light rates and adequate average temperatures for the growth of microalgae. The wide availability of bodies of water and land will allow the country to produce renewable energy from microalgae.

We show that if $\limsup_{n\to\infty}p_n>0,$ then there exists an integer $N$ such that $P_N(0\leftrightarrow \infty)>0$, where $P_N$ is the truncated measure obtained by taking $p_{N,n}=p_n$ for $n \leq N$ and $p_{N,n}=0$ for all $n> N$.

Abstract: the effects of imazaquin and imazethapyr on corn (safrinha) planted right after the soybean were studied on a clay soil (75% clay) in londrina, state of paraná, brazil, during the season 1995/96. imazaquin was applied to soybean at 120 and 240 gai/ha ppi and imazethapyr was applied at 80 and 160 gai/ha at pre emergence. corn was planted every 30 days from application till harvest (150 daa). the corn crop was much more sensitive to imazaquin than to imazethapyr although the residue of imazethapyr found in the soil samples (hplc) was higher than imazaquin till 90 daa. in the first month after application the residual of imazaquin caused high crop injury to corn while imazethapyr caused 30-40% injury at normal rate. yield results showed no damage after 87 days for imazethapyr (80 gai/ha) and after 112 days for imazaquin (120 g.i.a./ha) application. after these periods, the corn plants showed somewhat early crop injury. in a bioassay test cucumber (cucumis sativus) showed higher sensitivity compared to corn. the dry weight data showed no difference after 127 days for imazethapyr application and after 135 days for imazaquin application.

Truncated long-range percolation on oriented graphs

Abstract: We consider different problems within the general theme of long-range percolation on oriented graphs. Our aim is to settle the so-called truncation question, described as follows. We are given probabilities that certain long-range oriented bonds are open; assuming that the sum of these probabilities is infinite, we ask if the probability of percolation is positive when we truncate the graph, disallowing bonds of range above a possibly large but finite threshold. We give some conditions in which the answer is affirmative. We also translate some of our results on oriented percolation to the context of a long-range contact process.

Abstract: The organic molecule in the title hydrate, C17H14ClN3O·H2O, has a small but significant twist from planarity, as seen in the dihedral angle of 12.10 (17)° between the quinoline and benzene rings. The conformation about the C=N bond is E. Chains along the b axis are formed in the crystal structure aided by water–quinoline O—H...N (× 2) and hydrazone–water N—H...O hydrogen bonds. Layers of these chains stack along the a axis via C—H...π and π–π interactions [ring centroid–ring centroid distance = 3.674 (2) ]. C—H...O interactions are also present.

Abstract: The thienyl ring in the title compound, C14H15NOS, is disordered over two diagonally opposite positions, the major component having a site-occupancy factor of 0.569 (3). The molecule is highly twisted with respect to the central amide group, which is reflected in the dihedral angle formed between the thienyl and benzene rings of 77.01 (15)° [70.34 (18)° for the minor component]. In the crystal, molecules self-associate into chains along [100] via N—H...O hydrogen bonds. The chains are reinforced by complementary C—H...O contacts.

Abstract: Pyrazinamide (PZA) is an important drug used against tuberculosis that helped to decrease the time oftreatment from twelve to six months. The main action of this drug is the elimination of dormant bacilli, whichare responsible for the emergence of resistant strains. However, few analogs have been synthesized with thepurpose to explore and develop new compounds more effective and selective against M. tuberculosis. Inthis context, this review aims to highlight the importance of PZA in the treatment of tuberculosis as wellas the development of new substances based on this drug with potential antimycobacterial activities.
Orbital metastasis as primary clinical manifestation of thyroid carcinoma: case report and literature review

Abstract: capillary thyroid carcinoma (ptc) is the most common neoplasm of thyroid. it usually grows slowly and is clinically indolent, although rare, its aggressive forms with local invasion or distant metastases can occur. metastatic thyroid carcinoma rarely involves the orbit. we reported an uncommon case of orbital metastasis of ptc. a 66-years-old woman presented proptosis of the right eye. the biopsy of the tumor in orbit revealed metastatic thyroid carcinoma. the ultrasensitive tsh level was 1,34 mui/l and free t4 level was 1,65 ng/dl. a total thyroidectomy was performed and histopathological analysis of the nodule revealed follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma. currently, the patient has been receiving palliative chemotherapy with clodronate disodium. the importance of the case is due to its unusual presentation, which emerged as a primary clinical manifestation. although rare, thyroid carcinoma should be suspected in orbit metastasis.
