Fruit flies are responsible for large losses in commercial orchards in Brazil, thus, it is important to know the predominant species in the region. The objective of this study was to study the occurrence of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritoidae) and of their parasitoids in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck), 'Ponc ' mandarin (Citrus reticulate Blanco) and 'Rio' tangerine (Citrus deliciosa Ten), in Vi osa, Minas Gerais. The fruits were collected in April 2008. In the laboratory, the fruits were stored in plastic boxes containing moist sand in a controlled environment, to obtain pupae. Then, the pupae were counted, placed in glass bottles with fine sand and kept in an oven until adult emergence. Only one species of fruit fly (Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) and one species of parasitoid (Doryctobracon brasiliensis Szépligeti) were identified. Among the varieties, the sweet orange 'Baianinha' showed the highest rate of infection and the lower were assigned to the 'Rio' tangerine and 'Ponc ' mandarin.

Slow-release and organic fertilizers on early growth of Rangpur lime
Machado, Daniel Lucas Magalhes;Lucena, Cícero Cartaxo de;Santos, Dierlei dos;Siqueira, Dalmo Lopes de;Matarazzo, Pedro Henrique Monteiro;Struiving, Tiago Barbosa;
Revista Ceres , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-737X2011000300017
Abstract: slow-release and organic fertilizers are promising alternatives to conventional fertilizers, as both reduce losses by leaching, volatilization and problems of toxicity and/or salinity to plants. the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different rates of the organic fertilizer humato-macota? compared with the slow-release fertilizer osmocote? on the growth and nitrogen content in the dry matter of rangpur lime. a field experiment was conducted in a factorial completely randomized design with an additional treatment (4 x 4 +1). the first factor consisted of four humato-macota? rates (0, 1, 2, and 3%) applied to the substrate; the second factor consisted of the same humato-macota? concentrations, but applied as fortnightly foliar sprays; the additional treatment consisted of application of 5 kgm-3 osmocote? 18-05-09. means of all growth characteristics (plant height, total dry matter, root/shoot ratio and leaf area) and the potential quantum yield of photosystem ii (fv/fm) were higher when plants were fertilized with the slow-release fertilizer. the organic fertilizer applied alone did not meet the n requirement of rangpur lime.

Abstract: the aim was to evaluate the effect of different doses of cassava starch in postharvest fruit of 'mexerica-do-rio' storage at room temperature. the fruits were harvested at physiological maturity in the experimental orchard at ufv, and were selected, cleaned and then immersed in suspensions of cassava starch at doses of 0, 2, 3 and 4% (g.v-1), plus 0.5 ml.l-1 of mineral oil for 5 minutes and stored at 21.0 ± 1.0 °c and relative humidity of 85 ± 5%, for 12 days, and were evaluated every four days. there was a fresh mass loss in all treatments, however more drastic when no application of biofilm was made. the mass loss reflected in the juice content reduction. it was observed significant reduction in the vitamin c content and acidity, except for the latter, when using the higher dose of starch.
Dualiza??o dúplice: sobre a flexibiliza??o dos servi?os de ensino em Portugal

Abstract: being one of the most popularized measures of education policy taken by the latest portuguese governments, the so-called enrichment activities for primary school pupils can also stimulate a reflection upon the effects of dualism in the workplace - here viewed as the co-presence and cooperation, in the same institution, of workers with equivalent functions though with quite different contractual conditions. based empirically on the experience of one of the authors in several primary schools in a suburban city near lisbon, the article presents dualism and work precariousness as predictable results of the implementation of a political program that articulates several organizational processes - from the ministry of education, to mayors and partner entities, to each primary school -, having as common denominator the intention of rendering public educational services more flexible via the use of easily dispensable workforce.

Abstract: in this previously divulgated paper [1] we demonstrate that the light diffracted by a simple compact disc can be used to generate images with interesting basic attributes. we compare this attributes with the ones obtained with refractive elements. a compact disc acts as an axicon that generates a diffraction-free beam and, because the focused position of the image depends on the wavelength of the diffracted light, thus it can be useful as a spectral filter. the experiments are of easy reproduction, allowing the understanding of images that the students observe daily at school or at home.

Human Parasitic Diseases , 2012, DOI: 10.4137/HPD.S6970
Abstract: Background: A high rate of Pediculosis capitis in school children has been reported in some African countries. However, systematic information on ectoparasitosis among school children from Angola is not available. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of head lice among school children and ascertain relevant teachers’ knowledge about head lice infestation. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 171 randomly selected children attending school in Viana. The children were examined for presence of head lice by visual inspection. In addition, a questionnaire was used to assess teachers’ and children’s’ knowledge about this ectoparasite. Results: The overall prevalence of head lice was 42.1%, with a significance difference between the genders (girls [95.8%] versus boys [4.2%,] P < 0.001). Self-reported history of being in contact with another person infested with head lice was the main risk factor for becoming infested. Conclusion: A high rate of head lice infestation was demonstrated. Female gender and history of contact with someone already infested were the main risk factors. Teachers demonstrated a knowledge of the biology and clinical signs of head lice, but did not have adequate knowledge about its treatment, suggesting a need for increased competence on the part of teachers to be able to teach children about preventative measures. However, further systematic epidemiological studies are required to increase our understanding of ectoparasitosis in Angola.
Minimally invasive surgery for diabetic plantar foot ulcerations
Fábio Batista,Antonio Magalhes,Caio Nery,Daniel Baumfeld
Diabetic Foot & Ankle , 2011, DOI: 10.3402/dfa.v2i0.10358
Abstract: Complications of diabetes mellitus constitute the most common indications for hospitalization and non-traumatic amputations in the USA. The most important risk factors for the development of diabetic foot ulcerations include the presence of peripheral neuropathy, vasculopathy, limited joint mobility, and pre-existing foot deformities. In our study, 500 diabetic patients treated for plantar forefoot ulcerations were enrolled in a prospective study from 2000 to 2008 at the Federal University of S o Paulo, Brazil. Fifty-two patients in the study met the criteria and underwent surgical treatment consisting of percutaneous Achilles tendon lengthening to treat plantar forefoot ulcerations. The postoperative follow-up demonstrated prevention of recurrent foot ulcerations in 92% of these diabetic patients that maintained an improved foot function. In conclusion, our study supports that identification and treatment of ankle equinus in the diabetic population may potentially lead to decreased patient morbidity, including reduced risk for both reulceration, and potential lower extremity amputation.
