Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-43662009000100001
Abstract: this study was carried out in order to evaluate the relation between erosivity index and the rainfall pattern associated with different kinds of soil preparation and cover with erosion losses in a red yellow argisol. the experiment was conducted in five soil loss experimental plots of 3.5 x 22.0 m, with the following treatments: conventional tillage (plowing plus disking) in contour lines and sowing the velvet bean (mucuna pruriens), sun hemp (crotalaria juncea) and corn (zea mays l.); conventional tillage (plowing plus disking) in slope line and sowing of corn, conventional tillage (plowing plus disking) in slope line and without soil cover. the results showed that soil loss was more affected by different treatments than water loss; the treatments sun hemp and corn sowed in slope line were those that presented, respectively, the smaller and the larger soil and water losses; and the precipitation events characterized as advanced, intermediate and delayed patterns were responsible for 62.6, 11.8 and 25.6% of the water losses and for 35.1, 6.6 and 58.3% of the soil losses, respectively.

Abstract: the present research aimed to describe possible histopathological alterations in the reproductive system (testicles and epididymis) of male dogs experimentally infected with toxoplasma gondii. canines (n=10) serologically negative for t. gondii were selected and distributed into three experimental groups: gi, 3 inoculated with 2.0 x 105p strain oocysts; gii, 3 infected with 1.0 x 106rh strain tachyzoites; and giii, 4 control dogs. antibody research (ifat) against t. gondii was realized. toxoplasma gondii infection was confirmed by seroconversion of the 6 males infected with tachyzoites and oocysts from postinoculation day (pid) 7 and 14, respectively. at pid 70, all dogs were submitted to orchiectomy and testicle and epididymis samples were collected and histologically processed for examination under optical microscope. the following alterations were diagnosed: mild and moderate mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate in the epididymis, moderate cellular edema, hydropic degeneration and moderate interstitial fibrosis in seminiferous tubules. the histopathological results in the present research, isolation of t. gondii in testicle and epididymis fragments by immunohistochemistry and results from the literature by other authors in different tissues, all infer that the alterations observed in dogs infected with t. gondii are suggestive of toxoplasmic infection.

Abstract: The Kantian remarks concerning the thing in itself as cause of the sensitive affection are certainly problematic, since they seem to contradict the Critical principle that states the unknowability of things in themselves, and seem to involve, on the other hand, an illegitimate use of the categories. In this paper I shall try to show that —notwithstanding the position of numerous interpreters— such remarks neither contradict the principle of Critical agnosticism nor involve an illegitimate use of the categories, being, at the same time, fully compatible with the fundamental principles of Kant′s “Transcendental Aesthetics”. Finally, I shall comment on the importance of the problem of affection in relation to a correct interpretation of the Critical doctrine. Abstract: In the origins of quantum physics, in the early 20th century, assimilation and maturity of the new theories required the establishment of linkages with their predecessors, before getting rid of them and being able to form a new all-embracing structure of understanding in the discipline. In this paper we analyze the role played by Paul Ehrenfest in a part of that process. In the first part we highlight the parallelism of his work with that of Niels Bohr showing how the combined work of both allows us to argue in support of the conceptual continuity in the development of scientific theories. However, we also show that such continuity has its limits. In our case of study we use the analysis that Albert Einstein and Paul Ehrenfest made of the Stern- Gerlach experiment to show that, in a revolution of knowledge, in the end new paradigms appear with which the new theories finally emerge from the earlier. Abstract: Background Protection and recovery from visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have been associated with cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses, whereas no protective role has been attributed to humoral responses against specific parasitic antigens. In this report, we compared carefully selected groups of individuals with distinct responses to Leishmania chagasi to explore antigen-recognizing IgG present in resistant individuals. Methodology and Principal Findings VL patients with negative delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) were classified into the susceptible group. Individuals who had recovered from VL and converted to a DTH+ response, as well as asymptomatic infected individuals (DTH+), were categorized into the resistant group. Sera from these groups were used to detect antigens from L. chagasi by conventional and 2D Western blot assays. Despite an overall reduction in the reactivity of several proteins after DTH conversion, a specific group of proteins (approximately 110–130 kDa) consistently reacted with sera from DTH converters. Other antigens that specifically reacted with sera from DTH+ individuals were isolated and tandem mass spectrometry followed by database query with the protein search engine MASCO were used to identify antigens. The serological properties of recombinant version of the selected antigens were tested by ELISA. Sera from asymptomatic infected people (DTH+) reacted more strongly with a mixture of selected recombinant antigens than with total soluble Leishmania antigen (SLA), with less cross-reactivity against Chagas disease patients' sera. Significance Our results are the first evidence of leishmania proteins that are specifically recognized by sera from individuals who are putatively resistant to VL. In addition, these data highlight the possibility of using specific proteins in serological tests for the identification of asymptomatic infected individuals.

Abstract: the intersection between spiritual dimension and health has become a research area of increasing interest in the last years. spiritual dimension is described as relevant in the meaning attributed to the suffering related to a chronic disease, and also as a hope resource. cancer is a life threatening condition and even when physical symptoms become less important, spiritual issues raised during the disease process remains. this research paper aims to analyse the spirituality differences in a group of cancer survivor patients, according to clinic and socio-demographic variables, and assesses the correlation between spirituality and quality of life dimensions. material and methods: the participants were 426 patients who had suffered from an oncologic disease. they filled up a socio-demographic questionnaire, a spirituality scale and the qlq-c30. results: we found significant statistical differences between spirituality dimensions and socio-demographic and clinic variables. we noticed a significative although moderate value, between spirituality and quality of life. we can deduce that spirituality is faced as a notion related with quality of life, although conceptually distinct. conclusions: this research results emphasise the relevance of a global perspective of the patient. other research works developed in this area, will be needed in order to validate these results.

Abstract: In this paper a procedure is established for solving the Probabilistic Load Flow in an electrical power network, considering correlation between power generated by power plants, loads demanded on each bus and power injected by wind farms. The method proposed is based on the generation of correlated series of power values, which can be used in a MonteCarlo simulation, to obtain the probability density function of the power through branches of an electrical network.
