Background: Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a rare non-melanoma skin cancer, considered to be a subtype of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). BSC often produces distant metastases with a higher risk of recurrence than that of BCC which is not commonly found in the lip. Case Report: A 57-year-old white female patient presented an ulcer on her lower lip that had an ongoing development for over six months. Physical examination, photo documentation, videoroscopy, scraped cytology, toluidine blue test, and biopsy of the ulcer were carried out. Results: Upon physical examination we observed an actinic cheilitis associated with the ulcer. Videoroscopy revealed the presence of fissures and erosion that had not been seen by oroscopy. Toluidine blue test was only positive for the region of the ulcer. Cytological analysis revealed rare nests compatible with carcinoma. Histopathology of the biopsy revealed a carcinoma with nests lined by basal cells associated with areas of squamous differentiation. The patient was then referred to surgery for the removal of the BCC. Analysis of the specimen showed free surgical margins and the immunohistochemical panel did not confirm the initial diagnosis of BCC, indicating a subtype of BSC. After surgery, the patient has been followed by periodic consultations. She is well and without further complications. Coments: BSC

Abstract: Paracoccidioidomycosis is the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America. It is a fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. This microorganism can penetrate the human body through direct contact and can cause intense lymphadenopathy, ulcerated lesions in the oral cavity and in the skin among other alterations. In this study, we report a case of paracoccidioidomycosis with unusual clinical presentation, as it manifested in the female sex and although it did not present any relevant complaints of respiratory focus, it presented a single ulcerated lesion in the buccal mucosa. A biopsy of the lesion and a mycological examination revealed Paracoccidioidesbrasiliensis infection.
The Brazilian biofuels industry

Biotechnology for Biofuels , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1754-6834-1-6
Abstract: Fuel-grade ethanol, produced from biomass, has been considered as a suitable automotive fuel for nearly a century, particularly for vehicles equipped with spark-ignition engines (technically referred to as Otto cycle engines, but commonly known as gasoline engines). Ethanol was not used in significant amounts until the mid 1970s. The dramatic increase in the cost of oil at the time of the first oil crisis imposed severe foreign exchange burdens on countries dependent upon oil imports, including Brazil. As a leading producer of sugar from sugarcane, Brazil was well situated to explore the option of ethanol as an alternative to gasoline. This led the Government to encourage the redirection of some sugarcane production to generate ethanol as a replacement for gasoline, thus reducing oil imports.Under the Brazilian Government's plan, PETROBRAS, the state-owned oil company, would purchase a guaranteed amount of ethanol from producers. In addition, economic incentives were given to agro-industrial enterprises willing to produce ethanol, in the form of low interest rates. This translated into nearly US$2.0 billion in loans from 1980 to 1985, representing 29% of the total investment needed [1]. On the basis of such policies, ethanol production increased rapidly over the years, reaching 18 billion liters in 2007.Ethanol from sugarcane, produced under proper conditions, is essentially a renewable fuel and has clear advantages over gasoline in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality in metropolitan areas.In this paper we review the technological characteristics of ethanol as a fuel, the present 'status' of the ethanol Program in Brazil, the characteristics of ethanol as a renewable fuel, the future perspectives of the ethanol Program in Brazil followed by a discussion on the possibility of expanding ethanol production from sugarcane and conclusions.Ethanol is an excellent motor fuel. It has a motor octane number of 98 which exceeds that of gasoline (octane
O repensar da educa??o no Brasil
Goldemberg, José;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141993000200004
Abstract: a detailed over view of brazilian education, examining the public power activity, illiteracy, elementary education, evasion, failure, didatic books, high education, among other aspects of this matter. it is not possible to solve the poverty problem by creating new schools. more than half of the ministry of education resources is used in college and high level education, contrary to the federal constitution, which gives priority to the elementary school and the elimination of illiteracy. the priorities of the educational systems should be: reduce failure, extend the access to high school and improve the quality. in view of that it's necessary to train teachers, increase their salaries and give assistance to the students, providing snacks and books. the public administration must apply the resources in the pooer regions, giving support to the states and counties.
Biomassa e energia
Goldemberg, José;
Química Nova , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422009000300004
Abstract: biomass was the dominating source of energy for human activities until the middle 19th century, when coal, oil, gas and other energy sources became increasingly important but it still represents ca. 10% of the worldwide energy supply. the major part of biomass for energy is still "traditional biomass" used as wood and coal extracted from native forests and thus non-sustainable, used with low efficiency for cooking and home heating, causing pollution problems. this use is largely done in rural areas and it is usually not supported by trading activities. there is now a strong trend to the modernization of biomass use, especially making alcohol from sugar cane thus replacing gasoline, or biodiesel to replace diesel oil, beyond the production of electricity and vegetable coal using wood from planted forests. as recently as in 2004, sustainable "modern biomass" represented 2% of worldwide energy consumption. this article discusses the perspectives of the "first" and "second" technology generations for liquid fuel production, as well as biomass gaseification to make electricity or syngas that is in turn used in the fischer-tropsch process.

Abstract: ABSTRACT: Adopting the interpretative anthropology approach, the text narrates the experience of an anthropologist-writer in contact with the universe of Brazilian indigenous literature and poetry, which inspired her to conception of the I Recital of the IndigenousPoetics of the Casa das Rosas, as an event to assemble Indians, indigenous and indianist writers from different backgrounds, both classic and contemporary. It discusses the issue of the social function of poetry & prose and its independence from cultural context and concludes for talking of “poetics”, because the event will not host on one only poetic, western Aristotelean poetic, but the diversity that inhabits oral history and indigenous rituals, whether elaborated or not, which have in common the inventiveness and enchantment with words and their possibilities.RESUMO: Adotando a abordagem da antropologia interpretativa, o artigo narra a experiência de uma antropóloga-escritora no contato com o universo da literatura e poesia indígena no Brasil, que a inspirou a conceber o I Sarau das Poéticas Indígenas, da Casa das Rosas, como um evento para reunir índios, escritores indígenas e indianistas de diversas origens, clássicos e contemporaneos.
Space Deformations, Surface Deformations and the Opportunities In-Between
Daniel Cohen-Or,

计算机科学技术学报 , 2009,
Abstract: In recent years we have witnessed a large interest in surface deformation techniques. This has been a reaction that can be attributed to the ability to develop techniques which are detail-preserving. Space deformation techniques, on the other hand, received less attention, but nevertheless they have many advantages over surface-based techniques. This paper explores the potential of these two approaches to deformation and discusses the opportunities that the fusion of the two may lead to.
