Barrel cortical neurons and astrocytes coordinately respond to an increased whisker stimulus frequency

Abstract: With two-photon imaging and electrophysiology to record cellular functions in the barrel cortex in vivo, we analyzed the activity patterns of neurons and astrocytes in response to whisker stimuli with increasing frequency, an environmental stimulus pattern that rodents experience in the accelerated motion. Compared to the resting state, whisker stimulation caused barrel neurons and astrocytes to be activated more synchronously. An increased stimulus frequency up-regulated the activity strength of neurons and astrocytes as well as coordinated their interaction. The coordination among the barrel neurons and astrocytes was fulfilled by increasing their functional connections.Our study reveals that the nerve cells in the barrel cortex encode frequency messages in whisker tactile inputs through setting their activity coordination.
Differential transcription-activating capability of NS1 proteins from different influenza virus subtypes expressed in yeast

Abstract: Influenza A virus NS1 protein is an important regulatory factor with multiple functions and contributes greatly to viral pathogenesis. In the present study, transcription-activating potential of NS1 from different influenza A virus subtypes was examined in yeast two-hybrid system. The bait vectors containing different NS1 genes, along with an empty prey vector, were transformed into yeast AH109(for growth assay on QDO plate and α-galactosidase assay), and Y187(for β-galactosidase assay). AH109 transformants with NS1 gene from H1N1, H5N1, and H9N2 viruses grew vigorously on the QDO plate and secreted high level of α-galactosidase. Also, Y187 bearing the above NS1 genes exhibited enhanced β-galactosidase activity. Nevertheless, H3N2-NS1-transformed AH109 and Y187 yeasts did not grow on QDO plate and secrete β-galactosidase, respectively. These findings denote the remarkable variation in NS1 proteins from different influenza A virus subtypes on the transcription-stimulating capability in yeast.

Configuration scheme for small scale Multi-FPGA systems

Abstract: Multi-FPGA systems have tremendous potential, providing a high-performance computing substrate for many different applications. These systems harness multiple FPGAs, connected in a fixed pattern, to implement complex logic structures. In order to use such a system effectively, it is a key for constructing a good performance hardware platform. The configuration scheme is an important part in hardware design. This paper aims at small scale Multi-FPGA systems composed of SRAM-based FPGAs developed by Xilinx Corporation, proposes a novel configuration technique by using Platform Flash PROM XCF32P. Using this scheme, only adopting one XCF32P and one Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) we can configure four FPGAs with monolithic configuration data smaller than 8Mbit. When the number of FPGA is more than four, Design revisioning allows the user to cascade more XCF32P PROMs to realize. Since Xilinx Platform PROM and Xilinx FPGA/CPLD are used to get a single-vender solution, the design for hardware and software is simplified.
A Modified Technique for Analysis of Synchronous Counters Constructed with Flip-flops

Abstract: Some methods of fabrication make it economically attractive to construct counters (and other devices) by connecting sets of identical flip-flops(FFs), if the FFs have a common clock input, the state transitions of the whole counters are as rapid as the state transitions of each FFs, so that the counter is further restricted to be synchronous. In order to simplify the process for analysis of synchronous counters constructed with flip-flops, a simple and successful method is proposed. Using this method, the state transition equations obtained from logic diagram of counter are converted to standard sum-of-products forms(SOPs). By finding out the logic principle for achieving the value of logic function based on the standard SOPs, the values of next state can be directly obtained without any Boolean calculation. Analysis for a 3-bits counter shows that this method eliminates complex calculations, and makes the process of obtaining next state value and developing truth table more rapid and convenient.
Prior Knowledge, Older Age, and Higher Allowance Are Risk Factors for Self-Medication with Antibiotics among University Students in Southern China

Abstract: Background Self-medication with antibiotics (SMA) has been reported among university students in many countries, but little research has been done on this issue in China. The objective of this study was to evaluate knowledge and behaviors of university students and risk factors concerning SMA. Methodology/Principal Findings Using a novel questionnaire-based data collection instrument, an anonymous online survey was conducted with the students of Shantou University (STU), a university comprising 8 schools/colleges in eastern Guangdong, China. Of 1,300 respondents (13.8% of total eligible participants), 47.8% had self-treated with antibiotics. Logistic regression analysis identified prior knowledge of antibiotics (PKA), older age, and higher monthly allowance as independent risk factors for SMA. PKA significantly influenced students' knowledge about antibiotics, their uses, and common adverse reactions (all p<0.05). Among self-medicated students, 61.7% used antibiotics at least twice in the previous year. Community pharmacies were the major source of self-prescribed antibiotics. Reported common indications for SMA were sore throat (59.7%), fever (38.2%), cough (37.4%), runny nose (29.3%), and nasal congestion (28.7%). While 74.1% of self-medication episodes were based on students' own experiences, only 31.1% of students claimed to understand the package insert. Alteration of antibiotics and dosage during the course of self-treatment was made by 63.8% and 55.6% of students, respectively. At least two kinds of antibiotics were simultaneously taken by 82.6% of students. The majority of self-medicated students failed to complete the course of antibiotics. Adverse reactions were reported by 16.3% of students. Amoxicillin was the most common antibiotic used for self-medication. Conclusions High prevalence of SMA was noted among STU students. Presence of risk factors and risk-associated behaviors/attitudes in the study population calls for focused educational intervention and stricter governmental legislation and regulation of antibiotic use and sale in pharmacies.

Abstract: 背景与目的:近年来,随着技术发展,越来越多的基于能量传递的止血工具广泛问世并应用于开放性外科手术中。超声刀Focus刀头(Harmonic Focus?,HF)及Ligasure Small Jaw?刀头(LSJ)都是专为开放性甲状腺手术量身定做的。本文拟对北京协和医学院中国医学科学院肿瘤医院HF及LSJ完成的开放性甲状腺手术患者的临床资料进行病例对照分析,以期比较HF及LSJ在开放性甲状腺手术中的应用效果。探讨HF及LSJ用于开放性甲状腺手术的有效性及安全性。方法:选取本院过去1年内甲状腺癌初治患者,由同一外科医师主刀使用HF或LSJ完成甲状腺全切除+中央区清扫术,纳入HF组100例,LSJ组104例。通过比较两组手术时间及术后第1天引流量,比较两者在甲状腺手术中应用的有效性。通过比较两组术后并发症来评估安全性。结果:有效性:HF组平均手术时间为(95.8±18.0) min,LSJ组平均手术时间为(97.8±19.1) min,差异无统计学意义(P=0.363);术后首日引流量HF组为(35.2±20.3) mL,LSJ组为(36.3±23.8) mL,差异无统计学意 (P=0.977)。安全性:HF组出现暂时性声带麻痹者1例(1.0%),LSJ组术后伤口出现术区血肿者1例(1.0%);暂时性甲状旁腺功能低下者HF组18例(18.0%),LSJ组16例(15.4%);HF组术后首日甲状旁腺素平均下降(12.3±12.8) pg/mL,LSJ组平均下降(13.9±13.4) pg/mL;血清离子钙HF组平均下降(0.20±0.13) mg/dL,LSJ组平均下降(0.20±0.16) mg/dL,差异均无统计学意义(P均>0.05)。结论:HF及LSJ在开放性甲状腺手术中均安全、有效,手术并发症相当。

Abstract: Fermented beverages have continued to give more surprises in terms of the presence of biomolecules and the diversity of microorganisms that may be contained. Republic of Congo is home to a panoply of fermented foods and beverages that are still not yet studied. This is the case of plantain wine fluently called banana wine. Within this framework, this work aims to study the role of Biosurfactant-like Biomolecules secreted during fermentation of plantain wine. Using MRS medium, 15 isolates bacteria have been found. 100% are able to secrete biosurfactant and 66.66% are extractible biosurfactants. 33% of isolates have been associated to Lactobacillus plantarum (Is2, Is9, Is12 and Is13) by using a one-step multi-plex PCR that targets genes encoding for bacteriocins. Biosurfactants secreted by L. plantarum play an important role in the preservation of banana wine. The biosurfactants extracted with chloroform and ammonium sulphate are able to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria including Shigella flexneri, Salmonella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphy-lococcus aureus.

Abstract: In the view of traditional industry cluster theory, it is easy to copy the software industry cluster pattern, or it is easy to copy another Silicon Valley, due to low reliability of the resources and the guidance factors of locations in software industry. But it is much more difficult to copy a Silicon Valley mode practically than imaginatively and the difficulties of bringing up and supporting high-tech initiatives is more than theoretic anticipation. In China, the software companies have just gathered together geographically and therefore no initiative center can be formed. All these above signify that software industry cluster is distinct from the traditional industry clusters, but the cognition of the reasons of software industry cluster is not clear yet. Furthermore, reasonable explanations of the bewilderment in the economical practice of software industry cluster are urgently needed.

Abstract: Based on the direction of the international FDI changed, from manufacturing to service industries, we should concern about the influence of the introduction of China’s logistics industry FDI to the national economy. The paper sets up regression model to examine logistics FDI and GDP in two aspects of time series and growth rate, we find that the logistics FDI reaches a high correlation with GDP, and logistics FDI is one of the major driving forces of economic development. Therefore, China should expand the introduction of logistics FDI, improve the quality of foreign investment, develop the positive economic growth effect of logistics FDI and promote the change of China’s economic growth pattern to ensure the development of China’s economy.
