Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492008000200032
Abstract: cytokines are molecules involved in intercellular communication in immune and inflammatory responses, playing an important role in uveitis. genetic polymorphisms responsible for the production of certain cytokines have been associated with the occurrence and the severity of uveitis. therefore, the present study has the purpose of describing these possible associations, pointing out the individual genetic background in the prognosis of uveitis.

Abstract: toxoplasma gondii infection is an important cause of ocular disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent subjects. the pathogenesis of retinochoroidal lesion associated with this infection is not fully understood. in this review, the role of the immune system in the control of toxoplasma infection, especially in the eye, is discussed.
A constru??o do conhecimento no 'Alternate Reality Game'
Signo y Pensamiento , 2010,
Cordeiro, Cynthia Azeredo;Oréfice, Fernando;Lasmar, Euler Pace;Santos, Helena Hollanda;Valadares, Eugênia Ribeiro;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492007000400024
Abstract: fabry's disease is a rare x-linked lisosomal storage disorder of glycosphingolipid (gl) metabolism, caused by a deficiency of a-galactosidase a activity. the progressive accumulation of gl in tissues results in the clinical manifestations of the disease, that are more evident in hemizygous males, and include angiokeratomas, acroparesthesia, cornea verticillata, cardiac and kidney involvement, cerebrovascular manifestations. a family with fabry's disease including 2 female patients and 3 male patients is reported. the patients were submitted to complete medical history, ophthalmological examination and alpha-galactosidase activity test. cornea verticillata was a constant finding in all patients. this demonstrates the important role of the ophtalmological examination for the diagnosis of fabry's disease since the eye findings are so characteristic of the disease.

Abstract: a criterion is a typical tool in the evaluation field that can be defined as a standard-dimension under which the object of an evaluation receives qualitative or quantitative judgments. during an evaluation, several rigorous methodological procedures are involved in development and application of suitable criteria to determine the value of the object being evaluated. this article presents a set of criteria to evaluate user satisfaction with hiv/aids-related pharmaceutical delivery services. the criteria construction process involved consensus amongst different experts, from academia, ngos, management, by means of the delphi technique. this technique prescribes a series of formal steps towards a consensus of experts, based on pre-structured methodology and processes. the findings were systematically organized in a structure under which the resulting satisfaction criteria are hierarchically organized. results suggest the importance of developing a methodological strategy in evaluation that involves participation of different actors and of enhancing knowledge on user satisfaction and pharmaceutical delivery services for hiv/aids.

Abstract: a column packed with 5-(4-dimethylaminobenzylidene)rhodanine adsorbed on silica gel was used for the preconcentration of cd, ni and zn at different spiked solutions prior to their determination by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. this column allowed recoveries over than 98% for the above elements and accurate analyses of coastal sea-water certified reference material were also achieved.

Abstract: small farmers have played an important role in maintaining genetic resources of traditional varieties. collecting and characterizing germplasm, especially landraces and heirloom varieties, are strategic activities that would create a knowledge base describing the traditional varieties of a given region and reduce the risk of genetic erosion. the objectives of this work were as follows: collect sweet potato roots from rural properties and local markets in rio de janeiro state, brazil; characterize the accessions using rapd and issr molecular markers, comparing the efficiency in discrimination of these two types of molecular markers; and estimate the genetic variability of the population. fifty-nine samples from rural properties and 19 from local markets were studied. a matrix of binary data was developed to analyze the molecular data using the jaccard index to estimate genetic differences among accessions, and clusters were made using the upgma method. the molecular techniques detected genetic variability among the accessions, with cophenetic correlation coefficients (ccc) of 0.80 for rapds and 0.89 for issrs. the rapd and issr marker results corresponded well, with a correlation of 0.55. all of the accessions were considered distinct, which demonstrates that traditional farmers maintain sweet potato genotypes that have good genetic diversity.

Abstract: this research was aimed at verifying the pregnancy rate in beef heifers submitted to a protocol for estrus induction and synchronization on the parturition period and its effect on the repetition of pregnancy at the second reproductive season. the experimental animals where composed of 194 hereford and braford heifers divided in two groups. the treatment group included a protocol of estrus observation and synchronization and fixed-time insemination (ftai). the control group was submitted to a conventional artificial insemination management, with estrus observation and insemination in the next turn. both groups were submitted to a natural mating period with clean-up bulls. the heifers were also observed as primiparous on the next reproductive season. the pregnancy rate was 91.7% in the first season for both groups. in the treatment group, 82% of the treated cows calved on the first 40 days of the groups calving season, against 51.7% of the control animals, resulting in a better conception rate in treated heifers (73 vs. 55%) in the second breeding season. the estrus synchronization and ftai management on the first breeding season of beef heifers produce better pregnancy results also on the second breeding season.
Mesti?agem, igualdade e afirma??o da diferen?a: pensando a política de cotas na universidade
Azeredo, Sandra;
Revista Estudos Feministas , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-026X2005000300017
Abstract: this essay was written during the intense debate in brazil around the introduction of affirmative action in the public universities according to a project proposed by the ministry of education. inspired in the work of gloria anzaldúa, this article contributes to the debate by discussing the notion of miscegenation. the essay analyzes some texts that argue in favor of the ministry's project, as well texts that present a dissenting view. taking as its point of departure anzaldúa's concept of consciencia mestiza, the essay contends that to introduce a project of affirmative action in the public university system in brazil requires a radical restructuring of the university, since the crises that confronts this institution emanates from its exclusionary practices.
