Discursive, lexical-semantic, pragmatic-inferential and/or prosodic communication processing may be impaired following a cerebrovascular accident. These deficits require intervention methods and programmes for effective communication rehabilitation. Within this context, the aim of this systematic review was to identify and describe methods used for neuropsychological rehabilitation of the communication of adults after a stroke, more specifically, systematic interven
Brain Interactions between Extinction and Reconsolidation in the Treatment of Fear Memories  [PDF]
Dagieli Sartor, Natália Gindri Fiorenza, Jociane de Carvalho Myskiw, Iván Izquierdo
Neuroscience & Medicine (NM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/nm.2011.23032
Abstract: Memory traces become labile at the time of retrieval, and this initiates two protein synthesis-dependent processes in the brain: extinction, which inhibits their further retrieval, and reconsolidation, which may enhance retrieval or change the memory’s content. Extinction may itself suffer reconsolidation. Interactions between these processes may be applied to the treatment of fear memories, such as those underlying the post-traumatic stress disorder.

Accountability Requirements and Professional Development in the US Adult Basic and Literacy Education System
CRISTINE SMITH
Literacy and Numeracy Studies , 2009,
Abstract: Even before the 2001 enactment of the No Child Left Behind legislation, the education bill that holds schools in the US accountable for student achievement, ‘adult education [had] become part and parcel of the new federal trend to encourage the setting of national education goals and standards and holding programs accountable for demonstrating achievements’ (Sticht 1998). Now, almost ten years after enacting the Workforce Investment Act (1998), the legislation that required states to report how adult students were making progress towards educational and work goals, the field is just beginning to take stock of whether accountability has helped or hurt our adult education system. In the US school system (kindergarten to 12th grade for children five to 18), several researchers have investigated the effect of stronger accountability requirements on professional development systems. Berry et al. (2003), in a study of 250 teachers and principals in schools across six Southeastern US states found that results were mixed: Although high-stakes accountability systems help focus professional development efforts on the curricular needs of students, little evidence exists to support the claim that such systems help teachers change their practice to enhance student learning...A tendency exists…to narrow the focus of professional development activities to tested subjects or provide general support that is disconnected from curricular needs. Abstract: background: working memory, phonological awareness and spelling hypothesis. aim: to verify the relationship between working memory, phonological awareness and spelling hypothesis in pre-school children and first graders. method: participants of this study were 90 students, belonging to state schools, who presented typical linguistic development. forty students were preschoolers, with the average age of six and 50 students were first graders, with the average age of seven. participants were submitted to an evaluation of the working memory abilities based on the working memory model (baddeley, 2000), involving phonological loop. phonological loop was evaluated using the auditory sequential test, subtest 5 of illinois test of psycholinguistic abilities (itpa), brazilian version (bogossian & santos, 1977), and the meaningless words memory test (kessler, 1997). phonological awareness abilities were investigated using the phonological awareness: instrument of sequential assessment (confias - moojen et al., 2003), involving syllabic and phonemic awareness tasks. writing was characterized according to ferreiro & teberosky (1999). results: preschoolers presented the ability of repeating sequences of 4.80 digits and 4.30 syllables. regarding phonological awareness, the performance in the syllabic level was of 19.68 and in the phonemic level was of 8.58. most of the preschoolers demonstrated to have a pre-syllabic writing hypothesis. first graders repeated, in average, sequences of 5.06 digits and 4.56 syllables. these children presented a phonological awareness of 31.12 in the syllabic level and of 16.18 in the phonemic level, and demonstrated to have an alphabetic writing hypothesis. conclusion: the performance of working memory, phonological awareness and spelling level are inter-related, as well as being related to chronological age, development and scholarity.
