Review: The Molecular Basis of Resistance in Mycobaterium tuberculosis  [PDF]
Lorena Cristina Santos
Open Journal of Medical Microbiology (OJMM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojmm.2012.21004
Abstract: Tuberculosis is a serious global public health problem and its high prevalence is strongly associated with the increase of drug resistance. This steady increase in the frequency of M. tuberculosis strains resistant to one or more agents commonly used to treat tuberculosis has drawn worldwide attention to understanding the molecular basis of resistance in M. tuberculosis. TB resistance is a great concern in the antibiotic resistance pandemic due to the high risk of death, as patients can remain infected for months or years and also because of the difficulty of the treatment. A molecular understanding of the series of events that render M. tuberculosis multi-drug resistant is very important in order to find a fast and appropriated diagnosis as well as a new target for new drugs.
A 93 YEAR OLD WOMAN WITH ACUTE CHANGES IN THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Vitorino M. Santos,Fabio H. B. Santos,Cristina T. Leal,Amanda D. Prates
Marmara Medical Journal , 2010,
Abstract: An uncommon case of sudden intraventricular bleeding following right thalamic hemorrhage is described in a very old female with chronic arterial hypertension. Computed tomography disclosed images of right thalamic hematoma with midline shift, and bilateral bleeding in both posterior horns of the lateral ventricles. Intraventricular extension occurred early in the course of the intracranial hemorrhage and could have carried ominous outcome, because of higher morbidity and mortality rates. Despite of diverse complications, conservative management of the old-aged patient was successful.
Hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos em resíduos sólidos industriais: uma avalia??o preliminar do risco potencial de contamina??o ambiental e humana em áreas de disposi??o de resíduos
Sisinno, Cristina L. S.;Pereira Netto, Annibal D.;Rego, Eliane Cristina P. do;Lima, Guilherme dos Santos V.;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2003000200035
Abstract: proper solid waste disposal is important to avoid human and environmental contamination. the nbr 10,004 waste classification lists several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (pahs) and indicates that the presence of at least one pah in a waste sample is enough to classify it as hazardous. the aim of this study was a preliminary evaluation of pahs in solid waste samples from selected industries to obtain a preliminary overview of their potential for contamination in case of improper disposal. one or more pahs listed in nbr 10,004 (benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, indene[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene, chrysene, or fluoranthene) were found in all samples, thus leading to their classification as hazardous waste. our results showed that toxicologically relevant pahs were found in all the samples, indicating that their final disposal must be performed in appropriate areas in order to minimize human health risks and environmental contamination from waste disposal areas.

Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2015.511087
Abstract: Background: The metabolic syndrome affects more and more global people. Although it shows increasing prevalence in general population, the syndrome affects more women than men, what makes its risk of being developed during pregnancy period. Also, possible perinatal adverse effects are always lurking. Objective: the objective was demonstrated what’s new in literature on metabolic syndrome and pregnancy. Methods: A literature review was performed to extract the articles published on metabolic syndrome and pregnancy, its prevalence, obstetrical complications and its perinatal adverse effects. This review was conducted by online researching in PubMed, Lilacs, Medline, Embase, Scopus, Medscape, Libertas Academica and CINAHL database, Science database and also by researches in books. 27 selected articles on metabolic syndrome after this research were all published between 1988 and 2015. Results: Among those 27 articles and two books studied, SM rate in obstetric population ranged from 3% to 42% depending on the previously manifested components of the syndrome, age and region. Women with previously manifested components showed more adverse perinatal effects. Conclusion: Women with pregestational DM or SM and SM develop more during pregnancy, obstetric complications and adverse perinatal outcomes.
Esophagectomy and substitution of the thoracic esophagus in dogs
Santos, Carlos Eduardo Meirelles dos;Rahal, Sheila Canevese;Damasceno, Débora Cristina;Hossne, Rogério Saad;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502009000500004
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate a technique to remove the thoracic esophagus without thoracotomy and two methods for thoracic esophageal replacement in dogs. methods: 27 ex-vivo dogs were divided into three groups in order to evaluate: g1 - total thoracic esophagectomy by the everting stripping method; g2 - total thoracic esophagectomy and esophageal substitution using the whole stomach; g3 - total thoracic esophagectomy and esophageal substitution using fundus rotation gastroplasty. after esophageal resection in g1, the integrity of the intrathoracic route was evaluated by endoscopy and tested with 1% methylene blue solution. results: visceral pleural rupture was observed in all animals. however, this intrathoracic route made it possible to bring both esophagus substitutes (g2 and g3) to be anastomosed to the cut end of the cervical esophagus. conclusions: thoracic esophageal substitution using the whole stomach showed less anastomotic tension and was less technically demanding than the fundus rotation gastroplasty method. the ex-vivo results support further studies to validate the techniques in clinical cases.
