Abstract: introduction: the peripheral facial palsy is a disease that can leave significant aesthetical and functional sequelae in patients. according to medical literature, bell's palsy (bp) is the most common cause, representing from 50 to 80% of the cases. however, it must be considered as an exclusion diagnosis. a slightly higher prevalence is estimated in women and its incidence is bimodal with peaks in the third and eighth life decades. most patients recover within weeks, though a worsening degree may be common in the first 48 hours. treatment must be performed to prevent complications and the medical procedures are not universally accepted. the following have been mentioned as bp risk factors: arterial hypertension, mellitus diabetes, pregnancy, puerperium and infection caused by type i herpes virus. although there are several bp associated risk factors, regarding face-lifting surgery there is only one reported case in medical literature. case report: in the present study, the authors describe the second case of bell's palsy after face-lifting surgery.

Abstract: Stannous chloride (SnC12) is used in nuclear medicine as a reducing agent to obtain technetium-99m-radiopharmaceuticals. It have been reported that natural products might reduce the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects related to SnC12. This work evaluated the biological effects of an aqueous extract of Salix alba on the survival of Escherichia coli (E. coli) AB1157 (wild type) cultures submitted to the action of SnC12. E. coli AB1157 cultures (exponential growth phase) were collected by centrifugation, washed and resuspended in 0.9%NaCl. Samples were incubated in water bath shaker with: (a) SnC12 (25mg/ml), (b)Salix alba extract(11.6mg/ml) and (c)SnC12(25mg/ml) + Salix alba extract (11.6mg/ml). Incubation with 0.9% NaCl was also carried out (control). At 60 min intervals, aliquots were withdrawn, diluted, spread onto Petri dishes with solid LB medium and incubated overnight. The colonies formed were counted and the survival fractions calculated. The extract was not able to protect the E. coli cultures against the lesive action of SnC12. The extract also did not interfere with the survival of the cultures. It suggested that the substances present in the Salix alba aqueous extract did not interfere strongly with cellular metabolism and did not alter the survival fractions of E. coli AB 1157. It is speculated that this extract cannot interfere with the generation of free radicals, the possible main agent responsible for SnC12 lesive action.

Abstract: recurrence of cardiac myxoma after excision is uncommon. the complete excision of the base of the tumor from the heart wall prevents its recurrence. in cases without wide resections , the probability of tumor recurrence rises. the authors report the case of a 26 year old male patient with recurrent left atrium myxoma presenting on two occasions. the patient was admitted with a left atrium tumor. echocardiogram disclosed a tumor in interatrial septum. the patient is a jehova's witness and did not receive whole blood or any blood products during the hospital stay. at operation a gelatinous mass fixed on interatrial septum was found. a wide resection was done, including the septal insertion of the tumor. pathological examination revealed it to be a cardiac myxoma.
Corpos sonhados-vividos: a dimens?o onírica do poder em Michel Foucault e sua rela??o com a psicologia
Silveira, Fernando de Almeida;
Psicologia USP , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65642009000100003
Abstract: michel foucault’s work highlights body, “interpenetrated by history”, as an expression of forces of power and knowledge, which get strategically articulated in the history of occidental society. as “the power is a producer of the individuality and that the individual is a production of the power and knowledge”, the body is a piece within a domination and submission play which is present in the whole social network, in the historical process of production of subjectivity. this research analyzes the oneiric dimension in the genealogy of foucault and it aims to verify the historical effects of the power and knowledge in the construction of the subjective imaginary, through the body, in a reciprocal approach between psychology and philosophy fields.
Michel Foucault e a constru??o discursiva do corpo do sujeito moderno e sua rela??o com a psicologia
Silveira, Fernando de Almeida;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722008000400011
Abstract: michel foucault investigates "the history of the relations between thought and truth" and how the correlation between the two factors is established. the body's enunciation is a fundamental discursive element on the modern subject's truth game. foucault's bibliography, commentators and other modern philosophers foreground current research which studies the issue of the body in the french philosopher's archaeological phase, mainly in the order of things. the discursive constitution of the body, life and man in their subjectification effects are highlighted, with special reference to the psychological subject's discursive constitution. in fact, foucault de-naturalizes the body and presents it as a key concept (specification grade) in the production of discourses on modern man. psyche is thus understood not as emanation or as the body's metaphysical essence, but as a discursive instrument, singularly emergent in the history of modern thought (fapesp).
Corpos invasivos e violentos: subjetiva o e incorpora o dos sentidos em Foucault e Merleau-Ponty
Fernando de Almeida Silveira
Revista Mal-estar e Subjetividade , 2007,
Abstract: Michel Foucault examines entangled body, submitted to the strikes of power and knowledge, which are strategically articulated in Occidental society s history. In his turn, Merleau-Ponty aims to investigate the sensible experience that germinates as an original stratum of proper body-world correlation, that is, as a region of senses that is not limited by its historical-cultural meanings because it represents our opening to the Being in general. This research starts from Foucault s conception of entangled body to analyze if Merleau-Ponty s point of view about sensible experience may be defined as a violent act in overflowing of perceptions, using the example of the correlation between sleep and vigil in incarnation and displacement senses process in phenomenical experience. The research has verified that only Merleau-Ponty proposes a joint between entanglement and germinated body, in which perception and subjectivation can be related mutually. From the discussion of the referred theorists, their commentators and other modern philosophers bibliography, the analysis is conducted through a transdisciplinar approach, which refers to Psychology and Philosophy fields as it analyzes the complex correlation among lived and historical body and identity construction process of modern subject. Salinity tolerance of halophyte Atriplex nummularia L. grown under increasing NaCl levels
Araújo, Sandro A.M. de;Silveira, Joaquim A.G.;Almeida, Tania D.;Rocha, Iza M.A.;Morais, Déborah L.;Viégas, Ricardo A.;
Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-43662006000400010
Abstract: the current study reports effects of salt stress on growth, k+ nutrition and organic composition of atriplex nummularia. the upper limit of the nacl gradient imposed on the plants was close to seawater salinity (600 mm). an external nacl of 150 mm improved the growth of this species, which corroborates its halophytic nature. evidence show that atriplex nummularia was responsive to nacl, but the mechanisms of this response are still not known. in such stress condition, na+ and cl- accumulation in leaves was far greater than that in roots; therefore salinity tolerance of atriplex nummularia is not due to ion exclusion mechanism. in spite of a reduction of k+ content of tissues under salinity conditions, no corresponding physiological relevance of this in terms of growth was found. the high affinity of root cells for na+ during uptake and, probably, its subsequent sequestration into cell vacuoles and structures of protection seems to contribute to osmotic adjustment as an increase in relative water content (rwc) of leaves was observed. nacl caused a decrease in total soluble proteins and chlorophylls; the relevance of this is discussed in terms of mechanisms of salinity tolerance. the ability of atriplex nummularia plants to keep na+ and cl- away from enzymes and cytosolic structures, together with an effective osmotic adjustment, is suggested as having a role in its tolerance to high salinity.

Abstract: in order to reevaluate the possible presence of schistosomiasis mansoni in the triangulo mineiro, one of the areas of the state of minas gerais where this parasite is not commonly found, malacological survey and fecal examinations were undertaken in the region between october 1990 and june 1992. a sample of 7,032 1st grade school children from 29 counties had their feces examined using the kato-katz method. amongst the children examined, two from planura and one from each countie of capinópolis, concei??o das alagoas, uberaba, uberlandia, prata and gurinhat? were positive for schistosoma mansoni. none of the children were identified as being autoctonous cases. in the malacological survey, 5,406 planorbid snails were examined. the specimens were identified morphologically and examined for s. mansoni by squashing between glass plates. the species were identified as biomphalaria tenagophila in three counties, as b. straminea in ten and b. intermedia in 16. no snails were found in eight other counties studies. the snails were found to be negative for s. mansoni. the presence of intermediate hosts for s. mansoni, associated with parasitized individuals emphasizes the necessity of epidemiological surveillance for schistosomiasis in the region of triangulo in the state of minas gerais.
