Abstract: objective: to examine perceptions among healthcare practitioners, managers and users of brazil's family health program (fhp) in two municipalities in minas gerais state, brazil. methodology: semi-structured interviews with the practitioners and managers focused on: professional training, family health program goals, teams and difficulties encountered in the municipalities; users responded to a structured questionnaire in households registered with four healthcare units in these municipalities, selected through a random draw. results: practitioners reported that: the requirements for a good team include the personal attributes of its members; they are not satisfied with the fhp organization; prevention is its main goal. managers ranked intervention at the family level as its main benefit, also mentioning health promotion, education and assistance as other important aspects. users indicated that: community health agents are the most outstanding professional category; specialists are required in the fhp; most respondents are not engaged in any health-related activities other than consultations; specialized services are preferable to the fhp. conclusion: there are different expectations among all those involved in the fhp, which may undermine the effectiveness of its services.

Abstract: This paper assesses the hydroesterification process for the production of Biodiesel from Monoraphidium contortum (MORF-1) microalgae biomass, as it is a sustainable alternative not only economically, but also environmentally and ecologically to replace petroleum diesel fuel. The Biodiesel studied in this work was obtained from fatty acid esterification, a product of microalgae and methanol biomass hydrolysis reaction. CBMM’s (HY-340) niobium oxide powder was used as catalyst. The reactions were carried out in a properly closed autoclave reactor (batch), where the reagents were mixed under constant stirring at 500 rpm for hydrolysis and esterification. The products generated were submitted to gas chromatography and oxidative stability analysis. The hydroesterification process showed itself to be a promising alternative to the conventional biodiesel production process (transesterification) as it favors the use of feedstocks with any acidity and moisture content and may be performed with acid catalyst, which favors high conversions in a small range of time (30 minutes).

Abstract:

This study evaluates the growth and chemical composition of the following marine microalgae: Dunaliella tertiolecta, Isochrysis galbana, and Tetraselmis gracilis and the chemical composition of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Microalgae can produce a number of compounds of high commercial value for the industry, mainly for the food industry. The growth kinetics, cell volume, pigments, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and fatty acid and amino acid composition were evaluated. I. galbana had the largest number of cells per mL-1 (107), concentration of carotenoids (6.33 μg·mL-1), and carbohydrates (34.32%). D. tertiolecta and T. gracilis had the highest cell volume (560.6 and 592.7 μm3, respectively), the highest amount of total dry biomass. D. tertiolecta

Abstract: Herein, the purpose is to present a Kalman filter based on the sigma point unscented transformation development, aiming at real-time satellite orbit determination using GPS measurements. First, a brief review of the extended Kalman filter will be done. After, the sigma point Kalman filter will be introduced as well as the basic idea of the unscented transformation, in which this filter is based. Following, the unscented Kalman filter applied to orbit determination will be explained. Such explanation encloses formulations about the orbit determination through GPS; the dynamic model; the observation model; the unmodeled acceleration estimation; also an application of this new filter approaches on orbit determination using GPS measurements discussion.

Abstract: objective: the "associa??o brasileira de epilepsia" (abe) is a non profit society, which has been organized as an institution mainly interested in divulging knowledge about the epilepsies and in promoting improvement of the quality of life of people with epilepsy. the aim of this revision is to describe the activities of abe since its foundation in 1987. methods: historical review of abe activities. results: abe is composed by people with epilepsy and their relatives, physicians, neuroscientists and other professionals allied to medicine. it was founded by prof. esper abr?o cavalheiro of "universidade federal de s?o paulo" (unifesp) in 1987. abe was accepted as the brazilian chapter of the international bureau for epilepsy (ibe) in 1991 and was declared full member of ibe in december 18th, 2005. abe received its "cnpj" number in june, 23rd, 2003 and its statute was reformulated according to the new civilian brazilian code in 2003, which was registered in legal entities registry office in september 16th, 2004. abe was qualified as an organization of civilian society with public interest (oscip) by brazilian minister of justice in january, 7th, 2005, published in official diary in january 17th, 2005. abe promotes monthly seminars about related subjects and the associates may also take part in several activities, including the project of painting "arte e vida", literature, expression and handcraft offices during weekly classes. conclusion: the "associa??o brasileira de epilepsia" has promoted in the last 20 years broad understanding of the epilepsies trough the dissemination of knowledge to general society, in order to reduce the stigma and the prejudice of the society towards the people with epilepsy.
Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from patients in a tertiary hospital in Bahia

Abstract: anti-tuberculosis drug resistance, particularly multiresistance, is a crucial issue in the control of tuberculosis (tb). this study estimated the prevalence of primary and acquired anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in strains of mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from hospitalized patients, to identify the risk factors for resistance, and to evaluate the its impact on hospital mortality for tuberculosis. strains of mycobacterium tuberculosis from 217 patients hospitalized for tb were analyzed. subjects were recruited sequentially at a tb reference hospital in salvador, bahia, brazil from july 2001 to july 2003. multiresistant (mr) strains were defined as strains resistant to rifampicin and isoniazid. of a total of 217 strains isolated, 41 (19.0%, 95%ci: 14.1-24.5%) were resistant to at least one drug. prevalence of primary resistance was 7.0% (10/145), while a prevalence of 43.1% (31/72) was found for acquired resistance. primary resistance to one drug alone was found in 2.1% (3/145) and acquired monoresistance in 5.6% (4/72). prevalence of mr strains in general was 14.3% (31/217), of which 4.2% (6/145) consisted of primary mr and 34.7% (25/72) of acquired mr. three strains showed resistance to more than one drug, but were not classified as mr. in the multivariate analysis, abandoning treatment remained strongly associated with resistance (adjusted or: 7.21; 95%ci: 3.27-15.90; p<0.001) following adjustment for 3 potential confounders (gender, alcohol dependence and hiv-infection). an association was found between resistance and mortality from tuberculosis, even after adjustment for hiv status, age, sex and alcohol dependence (adjusted or: 7.13; 95%ci: 2.25-22.57; p<0.001). high prevalences of resistance, principally acquired resistance including mr, were found in patients hospitalized for tb in bahia. this finding was strongly associated with having abandoned treatment, and confirmed the need to standardize the procedure for requesting sensitivity tests in this pop
Macrocospic and physiochemical characterization of a sugarless and gluten-free cake enriched with fibers made from pumpkin seed (Cucurbita maxima, L.) flour and cornstarch

Abstract: the consumers' interest for products with caloric reduction has increased, and their development is a technological challenge. the consumption of cakes has grown in importance and the demand for dietary products has stimulated the use of sweeteners and the optimization of bakery products. the consumption of fibers is related to chronic diseases prevention. pumpkin seeds (maximum cucurbita, l.), rich in fibers, can be used as a source of fiber in food products. a gluten-free diet is not easy to follow since gluten free products are not always available. the objective of this work was to perform a physicochemical characterization of cakes prepared with flours blends (fb) based on pumpkin seed flour (psf). the cakes were elaborated with fb in the ratios of 30:70 (c30) and 40:60 (c40) of psf and cornstarch (cs), respectively. the results showed gluten absence and near-neutral ph. the chemical analysis of c30 and b40 showed increase of ashes, lipids, proteins, and insoluble dietary fiber and a decrease in the content of carbohydrates and calories. the chemical composition of c40 presented the greatest content of lipids, proteins, and dietary fibers, the lowest content of calories, and the best physical parameters. therefore, both products proved suitable for human consumption.

Abstract: the use of mathematical and statistical methods can help managers to deal with decision-making difficulties in the business environment. some of these decisions are related to productive capacity optimization in order to obtain greater economic gains for the company. within this perspective, this study aims to present the establishment of metrics to support economic decisions related to process or not orders in a company whose products have great variability in variable direct costs per unit that generates accounting uncertainties. to achieve this objective, is proposed a five-step method built from the integration of management accounting and operations research techniques, emphasizing the monte carlo simulation. the method is applied from a didactic example which uses real data achieved through a field research carried out in a plastic products industry that employ recycled material. finally, it is concluded that the monte carlo simulation is effective for treating variable direct costs per unit variability and that the proposed method is useful to support decision-making related to order acceptance.
Antifungal activity of the extract of Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Zingiberaceae, against yeasts of the genus Candida isolated from the oral cavity of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus

Abstract: oropharyngeal candidiasis is the most common fungal infection among patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (hiv), and is treated empirically with topical or systemic antifungals. the objective of the present study was to investigate the possible antifungal action of the hydroalcoholic extract of curcuma zedoaria (christm.) roscoe, zingiberaceae, on yeasts in this population. samples were collected from hiv-positive patients who attended the laboratory for teaching and research in clinical analysis at the universidade estadual de maringá for routine exams. the isolated yeasts were identified at the genus and species levels through classical methodology. next, tests of microdilution in broth were carried out to determine the profile of susceptibility of these yeasts towards the hydroalcoholic extract of c. zedoaria, following methodology standardised by the clsi (2002). a total of 53 yeasts were identified, 49 of them c. albicans, two c. tropicalis and two c. glabrata. these yeasts were inhibited by low concentrations of the extract of c. zedoaria (between 1.95 and 15.63 μg/ml). in addition, 7.82 μg/ml inhibited 90% of the yeasts. our results indicate a potent antifungal action for c. zedoaria and suggest more detailed studies with a view towards the practical application of this phytomedicine in topical pharmaceutical forms for the treatment of oral candidosis or candidiasis.

A utiliza o de métodos matemáticos e estatísticos pode auxiliar gestores a lidar com dificuldades do processo de tomada de decis o no ambiente de negócios. Algumas dessas decis es est o relacionadas à otimiza o da utiliza o da capacidade produtiva visando a obten o de melhores resultados econ micos para a empresa. Dentro dessa perspectiva, o presente trabalho objetiva apresentar o estabelecimento de métricas que deem suporte à decis o econ mica de atender ou n o a pedidos em uma empresa cujos produtos têm grande variabilidade de custos variáveis diretos unitários que gera incertezas contábeis. Para cumprir esse objetivo, é proposto um método em cinco etapas, construído a partir da integra o de técnicas provindas da contabilidade gerencial e da pesquisa operacional, com destaque à simula o de Monte Carlo. O método é aplicado a partir de um exemplo didático que utiliza dados reais obtidos através de uma pesquisa de campo realizada em uma indústria brasileira de produtos plásticos, que utiliza material reciclado. Por fim, conclui-se que a simula o de Monte Carlo é útil no tratamento da variabilidade de custos variáveis diretos unitários e que o método de suporte à tomada de decis o proposto é válido.
