A Simple Mathematical Formulation of the Correspondence Principle  [PDF]

In this paper we suggest a simple mathematical procedure to derive the classical probability density of quantum systems via Bohr’s correspondence principle. Using Fourier expansions for the classical and quantum distributions, we assume that the Fourier coefficients coincide for the case of large quantum number. We illustrate the procedure by analyzing the classical limit for the quantum harmonic oscillator and the particle in a box, although the method is quite general. We find, in an analytical fashion, the classical distribution arising from the quantum one as the zeroth order term in an expansion in powers of Planck’s constant. We interpret the correction terms as residual quantum effects at the microscopic-macroscopic boundary.

Lipsius, Iusti Lipsi epistolae, VIII, 1595 'Inner peace and wisdom under a light veil of modesty: Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) and the edition of his correspondence' Humanists wrote and collected private letters, regarding them as literary works of art, sources of knowledge and wisdom and proof of the importance of intellectual networks. The eminent Dutch humanist Justus Lipsius corresponded with fellow intellectuals all over Europe. He carefully edited his own letters, revising them if necessary, and published an influential manual of letter-writing. His growing reputation as the greatest Belgian humanist led to plans for a complete edition of his correspondence, comprising some 4300 letters. Publication started in Brussels in 1978 and is still running (Iusti Lipsi Epistolae). This excellent edition is founded on sound editorial principles, highly facilitating the user's access to the world of Late Humanism.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to show complementary usage of logistic and correspondence analysis in a research subject to self-healing methodologies. Firstly, the number of the variables is reduced by logistic regression according to relationship between dependent and independent variables and then research carries on searching variables. The relationship among the behaviours of individuals and their demographic characteristics is modelled by logistic regression and shown graphically by correspondence analysis. In application, first of all, the effect of age, sex, marital status, education level, occupation and income level and present health condition, on appreciating self-health, is explained by a model. As a result of that model, it can be said that the effect of age, occupation and present health condition is reasonable. After analysing that model, the relationship between categorical variables (age, sex, occupation, preferred precautions, and worth of personal health) is shown graphically by multiple correspondence analysis.

Abstract: This paper presents the R package anacor for the computation of simple and canonical correspondence analysis with missing values. The canonical correspondence analysis is specified in a rather general way by imposing covariates on the rows and/or the columns of the two-dimensional frequency table. The package allows for scaling methods such as standard, Benzécri, centroid, and Goodman scaling. In addition, along with well-known two- and three-dimensional joint plots including confidence ellipsoids, it offers alternative plotting possibilities in terms of transformation plots, Benzécri plots, and regression plots.

Abstract: We present a unified approach to describing and linking several methods for representing categorical data in a contingency table. These methods include: correspondence analysis, Hellinger distance analysis, the log-ratio alternative, which is appropriate for compositional data, and the non-symmetrical correspondence analysis. We also present two solutions working with cummulative frequencies.

Abstract: correspondence analysis is a statistical method developed for descriptive exploratory analysis of large matrices. through this technique, the most important relations between a large pool of categorical and continuous variables may be plotted graphically. in this paper the described technique was applied to the data of an evaluation process of the national program of immunizations (pni). this evaluation was carried out in 660 health clinics, distributed over 98 brazilian cities. the variables analysed were related to the performance in pni activities or potential determinants of this performance. the correspondence analysis was followed by an ascending hierarchical classification process of the health clinics, using the computer program "systeme portable pour l'analise de données - spa". the performance pattern was not homogeneous. the clinics were classified in five groups according to the performance in the pni activities. in 58% of the health clinics, even the most elementary norms for the pni were not followed. the correpondence analysis is a powerful tool for inspecting large data matrices and selecting the most important variables for a more detailed subsequent analysis.

Abstract: natural regeneration of tree species at different toposequences was assessed in an area of 40 ha in vi?osa-mg.( 20o 45's and 42o 55' w), preserved since 1965, with minimum altitude of 730 m and maximum of 870 m. the soil was classified as red-yellow alico latisol and the vegetation was characterized as semideciduous forest.the 1.0 samplings consisted of 40 sub-units (samples with 5 x 5 m). these sub-units were inserted in the middle samples (10 x 25 m).previously evaluated the phyto-sociology of the tree community distributed in the toposequence's different: plan (5.07 ha - 5 sub-units), lean (13.2 ha - 15 sub-units), ravine (17.28 ha - 17 sub-units) and top (2.43 ha - 3 sub-units). was developed with heights divided in three categories (1 - individuals with minimum height 1 <2 m; 2 - individuals with minimum heights 2 < 3 m; 3 - individuals with heigts > 3 m). the inclusion level was of cap < 15,0 cm. 957 individuals were observed, belonging to 30 families, 72 genery and 91 species. the regeneration presented 31 species in the three size classes. this result allows saying that possibly, these species, will be present in the future forest. the species with better acting in the total natural regeneration for height class were: psychotria sessilis, siparuna arianeae, anadenathera macrocarpa, nectandra saligna, piptadenia gonoacantha, nectandra rigida, bauhinia forficata, psycotria carthagenensis, miconia pusilliflora and mollinedia floribunda. these species had presented efficient in what concerns the succession process in the area. psycotria sessilis and siparuna arianeae, with 254 and 76 individuals respectively, get the attention for their aggressive presence in the regeneration process, for they be typical of the sub-forest . for the analysis of correspondence carried through in the toposequence, it was since the ravine and plan had had greater floristic similarity of what excessively.

Abstract: The present paper regards the issue of interceptions and audio-video recordings, in light of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Therefore, a democratic society imposes a pressing need for respecting the right to one's "private and family life, his home and his correspondence", which is subject to certain restrictions that are "in accordance with law" and "necessary in a democratic society". Hence, the national legal framework regarding interceptions and audio-video recordings has to provide sufficient guarantees so as the right to privacy is not violated.
