Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2011.210151
Abstract: In developing countries, illegal dump structures or even some landfills do not include methane collecting systems, even if local environmental laws exist. In this condition, the greenhouse gas escapes to the atmosphere uncontrolled and practical solutions to tackle this problem are not obvious. To make a solution approachable, first-hand reliable data from dump emissions are required as starting point. The methane production is not homogeneous throughout the dump, therefore to estimate its global methane emissions, various representative gas monitoring sites distributed along the dump becomes necessary. This research work presents the measures of biogas emissions collected in the final disposal site located at Morelia (Mexico), along with an evaluation of the organic fraction and confinement time participation on biogas production. Biogas emission data were taken with a portable analyzer from 49 ventilation pipes for 52 weeks. For the composition and degradability analysis of solid wastes, the required samples have been collected from 16 sites. The results show a heterogeneous composition of solid wastes: 38 separate components are present, from those, 19 belong to organic categories and 28 of total components accounts for almost 99% of the waste. The mean biogas concentration detected was: 45.5% CH4, 32.4% CO2, 3.1% O2, and 18.9% balance gas (i.e., N2, CO or H2S). The ANOVA procedure clearly corroborated the influence of composition, biodegradability and time of confinement of solid wastes on the production of methane, despite the deficiencies in the final soil layer cover in these sites.

El ultrasonido en algunas afecciones del tiroides Use of ultrasonography in some thyroid diseases
Ultrasonography is the first diagnostic modality through imaging that is used in the study of thyroid diseases, and some of the advantages include being a cheap, non-invasive method and a guide for biopsy. Certain ultrasonographic features are significantly more frequent in malignant than in benign nodules. With the objective of creating a standard of the ultrasonographic lesions and the correlation with malignancy, the American College of Radiology has developed the system of thyroid image data and reporting.

Abstract: trophic webs of reef fishes at cuba?s nw area. ii. functional groups. a conceptual model of the food webs, mainly with fish, was built in a rocky shore of havana city with data covering from october 2004 to february 2006. the stomach contents of the most abundant fish was complemented with the literature. we used the relative importance index method to describe diets of carnivorous and omnivorous fish; and a modification of the relative abundance method for sponge eaters and herbivorous fish. agglomerative numeric classification techniques were used to determine the diet?s similarity. the matrix was made using bray-curtis dissimilarity index. ten functional trophic groups were formed on the basis of diet similarity. the cascade effect is evidenced in this area by the big top predator shortage and the dominance of a few low trophic level species. the regulator role of top predators is low because of over-fishing: the trophic web of this area is highly altered. rev. biol. trop. 56 (3): 1391-1401. epub 2008 september 30.

Abstract: trophic webs of reef fishes in northwestern cuba. i. stomach contents. studies on the reef fishes of cuba are not rare, but most have two basic limitations: small sample sizes and exclusion of small species. our study sampled more species and larger samples in the sublitoral region of havana city (23o7.587′ n, 82o25.793′ w), 2-18 m deep. we collected fish weekly from october 2004 through february 2006 with traps and harpoon. overfishing has modified the fish communities. we used the relative importance index to describe the diets of carnivore and omnivore species, and a modification of the relative abundance method for the herbivores and sponge-eating species. the main food items are benthonic crustaceans (crabs, shrimp, copepods) and bony fish (mainly demersal species). most species are eurifagous and thus, less affected by anthropic disturbance than specialist feeders. rev. biol. trop. 56 (2): 541-555. epub 2008 june 30.

Revista Cubana de Obstetricia y Ginecolog?-a , 2010,
Abstract: the macrosomia newborn is a heterogeneous group and of vital significance, its birth is a risky problem for the perinatology specialists. a case-control study was conducted to characterize the macrosomia newborn in the "mariana grajales" teaching provincial hospital of santa clara in 2007, to relate the mother and neonatal variables selected for study and control groups, as well as to compare the morbidity of macrosomia newborns and of those with a normal weight. the study group included all the live births neonates weighing 4000g or more and the control group included the live births following macrosomia, excluding those with low-birth weight and twins. information was gathered from a designed method to that end including the mother and neonatal variables and data were tabulated and showed in tables to express the results. it is emphasized that the 11 % of all live births had macrosomia with significant variables like age similar or greater than 35 years, multiparity, macrosomia and gestational diabetes. also, there was an statistic association including the labor at 42 weeks or more of pregnancy, body mass index (bmi) higher than 26 at pregnancy onset and the excessive weight gain (more than 15 kg). frequent neonatal morbidity: pulmonary edema, hypoglycemia, hypocalcaemia, metabolic acidosis, worsening physiological icterus, polyglobulin ant birth traumata without affecting the mortality in the institution. it is necessary the prenatal and perinatal care to limit the unfavorable results in the mother-child duo.

Trophic webs of reef fishes at Cuba’s NW area. II. Functional groups.
