Rojas Gómez,Mauricio F;
Historia (Santiago) , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71942011000200006
Abstract: this work aims to find out how the adoption of the liberal model of development and the ongoing project of economic modernization, affected the city of concepción during the second half of the nineteenth century, in relation to the mechanisms of social control used by the governing elites. the core of this study is centered on the role that the police played in the policy of disciplining in concepción. for this case, we have considered michel foucault's theory, that the police is a relevant condition for the existence of urbanity. liberalism, within the period of time considered in this work, understood that in order for the country to achieve socioeconomic progress of the country, it was necessary to establish social order. it was made a priority then, to convert the urban poor from "dangerous people" to "working-class", because of this educational and punitive policy was combined in the search of such intentions. the role of the police was crucial in this process, as they made the installation of unifying elite discourses in subaltern groups possible. through the appropriation of these discourses the subalterns themselves helped to contribute towards the building of hegemonies.
EURE (Santiago) , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0250-71612009000200003
Abstract: from the perspective of the functional model, the urban structure of the metropolitan area of concepción (chile) is analyzed. the main objective is to identify and characterize the urban centers that comprise it as a result of the changes in the metropolitan population and its mobility, specifically with the use of employment indicators and density functions. the results approximate to an understanding of the hierarchical organization of the settlements and their centralities. this clarifies some of the patterns in the structure of the model, both monocentric andpolycentric, which is a point of debate in discussions of metropolitan urban structures. the contributions of the research point to ways of describing and characterizing the behavior of the functional structure of the leading example of a metropolitan model in the south of the country.

Abstract: on the one hand, the government's attempt to revitalize the railway transportation system; on the other hand, a city that is undergoing a process of urban renewal. this proposal for a railway station in concepción is one of the first signs in this direction. it consists of a detachable structure (so it can be transported elsewhere), constructed with prefabricated elements and a corporative image that expresses the nature of the technological and repetitive world of the railway system.
Linacre,Lorena; Palma,Sergio;
Investigaciones marinas , 2004, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71782004000100003
Abstract: spatial and temporal distribution of euphausiids collected in four seasonal cruises of concepción in 1991 was analyzed. eight species of euphausiids were identified, euphausia mucronata, e. vallentini, nyctiphanes simplex, nematoscelis megalops, nematobrachion flexipes, stylocheiron longicorne, s. affine and s. suhmii. most species have been previously recorded in the southeastern pacific ocean, with exception of s. suhmii, that is commonly distributed in the central pacific ocean. the presence of s. suhmii constitutes the first record for the humboldt current system. the most abundant and frequent species were e. mucronata (76%) and n. simplex (23%). the euphausiids were collected in different seasons of the year, even though they show seasonal and spatial fluctuations associated to the oceanographic conditions. the seasonal maximum was determinate in autumn and the minimum in winter. significant differences between the different oceanographic sections were found. besides, an inverse relationship between the abundance of e. mucronata and the dissolved oxygen concentration was found, associated to coastal upwelling events

Areces,Nidia R.;
Memoria americana , 2007,
Abstract: the paper focuses on the "function of may 15th, 1796", taking place in the north frontier of the gobernación intendencia de paraguay, in a situation of permanent conflict, whose consequences transcended the local sphere. in concepción the condition of ethnic and militarized frontier shaped the existence of a community membership but, at the same time, created favorable spaces for violence. which were the sources of conflict in this social space? were they access to land, policies towards the indians, agreements with the command, smuggling, rivalry among families and political adherence? we will focus on these questions when analyzing this particular case, taking into account recent contributions on frontier societies. to this end, we will point out their causes and analyze their nature, considering the role of the state and looking for the links between violence and society from the initial framework to the ethnologizing impulse of facing "the others".
A preliminary study of seismic microzonation of Concepción based on microtremors, geology and damages patterns
Leyton,Felipe; Montalva,Gonzalo; Ramírez,Paola;
Obras y proyectos , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-28132012000100004
Abstract: we perform microtremors measurements at concepción and compute the predominantfrequency using horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (hvsr). we compare these results with the surface geology and several geotechnical surveys existing in the region, enabling a general characterization of the area. we present and complement these results with observations of damage produced by the mw 8.8 maule 2010 earthquake. preliminary results show the presence of fine-grained materials in the area characterized by very low predominant frequency (lower than 1.5 hz), which might explain the extensive damage observed at concepción and surroundings.

Socio-Spatial Inequality in Education Facilities in the Concepción Metropolitan Area (Chile)  [PDF]
Helen De la Fuente, Carolina Rojas, María Jesús Salado, Juan Antonio Carrasco, Tijs Neutens
Current Urban Studies (CUS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cus.2013.14013
Abstract: In Concepción Metropolitan Area (CMA), the uneven geographical distribution of population, exacerbated by the recent spread of urban growth, has promoted a clear spatial inequity in the provision of quality educational facilities. The objective of this research is to systematically compare the 493 schools of existing educational opportunities in the CMA with the aim to evaluate the spatial equity in order to improve a most inclusive urban planning. Statistical and graphical analysis revealed that nearest units to the center of the metropolitan area (Concepción) had better conditions than the farthest with respect to students-teacher ratio, teaching quality and academic outcomes assessment. This center-periphery pattern shows clearly the challenges to be faced in the CMA with respect to equitable access to quality educational resources.

On the one hand, the government's attempt to revitalize the railway transportation system; on the other hand, a city that is undergoing a process of urban renewal. This proposal for a railway station in Concepción is one of the first signs in this direction.
