Personal Data v. Big Data: Challenges of Commodification of Personal Data  [PDF]
Maria Bottis, George Bouchagiar
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2018.83015
Abstract: Any firm today may, at little or no cost, build its own infrastructure to process personal data for commercial, economic, political, technological or any other purposes. Society has, therefore, turned into a privacy-unfriendly environment. The processing of personal data is essential for multiple economically and socially useful purposes, such as health care, education or terrorism prevention. But firms view personal data as a commodity, as a valuable asset, and heavily invest in processing for private gains. This article studies the potential to subject personal data to trade secret rules, so as to ensure the users’ control over their data without limiting the data’s free movement, and examines some positive scenarios of attributing commercial value to personal data.
Uma reflex?o teórica sobre as rela??es entre natureza e capitalismo
Aguiar, Jo?o Valente;Bastos, Nádia;
Revista Katálysis , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-49802012000100009
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to recognize the articulation between the natural and contemporary global social sphere, in generic terms, the capitalist mode of production. based on an analysis of the mechanisms of appropriation of nature by the social engendering of the accumulation of capital, it seeks to identify some of the forms of the contemporary commodification of nature. these commodified expressions of nature are connected to the dynamics of the structural crisis of capitalism. in methodological terms, it emphasizes a perspective of totality in the approach to the object of study, without reducing the empiric substrate to a homogenized entity. therefore, the interactive process between nature and capitalism finds support in a set of mutual influences, of unequaled mediations of causality and contradictions.

Rationalizing Inconsistent Definitions of Commodification: A Social Exchange Perspective  [PDF]
Jeffrey R. Oliver, Lindon J. Robison
Modern Economy (ME) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/me.2017.811088
Abstract: Commodification is a widely used and inconsistently defined concept. Inconsistent definitions of commodification, this paper observes, exist because alternative outcomes and consequences of converting relational goods into commodities are confused with the definition of commodification-social exchanges that convert relational goods into commodities. Distinguishing between alternative outcomes and consequences of commodification and the definition of commodification allows us to rationalize inconsistent definitions of commodification. In rationalizing inconsistent definitions of commodification, it is important to distinguish between commodities (goods valued for their ability to satisfy physical needs) and relational goods (goods valued at least in part for their connections to people which enables them to satisfy socio-emotional needs). The process of commodification is described as relocating relational goods from the humanistic sphere and relocating them in the commodity sphere.

Abstract: this study carried out a sociological analysis of the history of beach volleyball. the problem was: why has the development of beach volleyball as an international sport occurred in brazil rather than in the usa? the hypothesis proposed that the framework of the field of beach volleyball has been defined by the dispute between two institutions, the fèdèration internationale de volleyball (fivb) and the association of volleyball professionals (avp). the outlined goals were to investigate why brazil came to be where beach volleyball was transformed into international show business and analyze the structure of the interdependent relationships among the sub components that make up the field. the proposed period included the years 1985 to 2004. the instrument capable of expounding the relationships that are established in the contemporary socioeconomic context was found in the 'theory of fields' of pierre bourdieu, which was applied to the material comprehending the development of beach volleyball. the historical material analyzed confirmed that the fivb took control of the sport, which therefore defined brazil internationally as the reference for beach volleyball.

Folklore : Electronic Journal of Folklore , 2012,
Abstract: In this paper we explore the current process of the smoke sauna’stransformation from a tradition into heritage in the context of rural tourism in V ru County, southeast Estonia. We examine the multiple meanings and values that the smoke carries from the tourism entrepreneur’s perspective and the possible connections between the smoke sauna and personally interpreted cultural identity. Our theoretical approach handles heritage production as a selective process conducted by tourism entrepreneurs, in which personal memories, stories and material settings are displayed or performed in order to make them experienceable for the public. The results of the analysis of the fieldwork material indicate that three major directorial attitudes towards local tradition and heritage exist, expressed in the materiality of sauna settings, whereas entrepreneurs’interpretations of the intangible dimensions of the smoke sauna aremore varied as they are based on emotional and personally significant meanings rather than shared cultural values.

Abstract: Based on the centrality of the firms in the modern world, the discourse adopted by them can be an important route of penetration of market logic on solidarity field. Whereas the Critical Discourse Analysis aims to explore the relationship between the use of language and ideology, we appealed to this methodological support to deconstruct some organizationaldiscourse in order to verify the role of business in the naturalization process of expansion ofmarket logic to other social fields precisely in the field of cooperative actions. In this article, the intention was to analyze the textual dimension, deconstructing texts and seeking to reveal the ideational meanings contained in the speeches analyzed in order to understand the beliefs produced in the text. It is part of the corpus of the study the institutional discourse available in the sites of three companies. The analysis undertaken allow us to say that cooperative actions proposed by the companies are inextricably linked to the acquisition of products. Relations between people articulated as consumer relations show the consumer society of Bauman (2008), and accountability of the company by defining and implementing actions in solidarity refers to the company world as Solé (2004) discusses. Language as an instrument of power, is a medium capable of naturalizing ideas within society (Wodak, 2004).
