An analysis of the degrees of persistence of inflation, inflation expectations and Real interest rate in Brazil
Silva, Cleomar Gomes da;Leme, Maria Carolina da Silva;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402011000300004
Abstract: this paper makes use of auto-regressive fractionally integrated (arfima) models, as well as unit root tests with structural breaks, to examine the ipca (the official inflation rate), inflation expectations, and the real interest rate in brazil. for the period ranging from july 1999 to december 2010 the results show that the brazilian inflation can be taken as stationary and mean-reverting, with some degree of persistence. as for inflation expectations, the non-stationarity detected in the fractional integration model is due to structural breaks, meaning that they can also be taken as stationary with mean-reversion. finally, the selic interest rate shows some sign of non-stationarity, which had already been found in the unit root tests. however, it cannot be characterized by a unit root of a pure form, but as a fractionally integrated process with some long memory.
Measuring unemployment persistence of different labor force groups in the Greater S?o Paulo Metropolitan Area
Silva, Cleomar Gomes da;Gomes, Fábio Augusto Reis;
Estudos Econ?micos (S?o Paulo) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-41612009000400003
Abstract: this article makes use of arfima models and unit root tests with structural breaks to examine the unemployment persistence of different labor forces in the greater metropolitan area of s?o paulo. to this purpose, not only is the region's open unemployment rate analyzed but it is also disaggregated by gender, age, color and position within the household. the period ranges from january 1985 to november 2008 and, despite using a range of estimation methods, the presence of a unit root cannot be rejected in general. the exceptions are the series related to age 15-17 and over 40. but even in these cases the parameter "d" lies above 0.5. this is an indication that the unemployment rates in s?o paulo can be defined as non stationary and the majority of the series are not mean-reverting. therefore, the disinflation policies implemented by the brazilian policymakers in the last two decades, as well as changes in real variables, have had long-lasting effects on the unemployment rates in s?o paulo.
Receitas e gastos governamentais: uma análise de causalidade para o caso brasileiro
Silva, Cleomar Gomes da;Machado, Sérgio Jurandyr;Lopes, Denílson Torcate;Rebelo, André Marques;
Economia Aplicada , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-80502010000400001
Abstract: the aim of this paper is to analyze the tax-spend debate for the brazilian case, that is, if an increase in public spending leads to an increase in government revenues, or if there is a reverse causality (the increase in government revenues leading to an increase in public spending). the empirical analysis is based on cointegration and vector error correction models and the data ranges from the 1st quarter/1999 to the 3rd quarter/ 2008. the results show that the brazilian government follows a "spend and tax" policy. it means that more government spending leads to permanently higher taxes.

Abstract: measurement of physical fitness is a common and appropriate practice in sports competition. the information obtained from testing will allow adjustments of the training program to meet an individual's specific fitness needs. the purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in metabolic and motor performance variables in handball players during a training program following a model proposed by verkhoshanski(7) and adapted by oliveira(8). eleven handball players, from 20 to 32 years old, body weight 89.5 ± 10.4 kg (70.2 and 105.1 kg), height of 184.4 ± 6.7 cm (171.8 and 198 cm) participated in this study. all participants were members of "unifil/londrina" handball team of londrina, paraná. the subjects were tested and retested after developing a 16-week training program, prior to the start of the national league championship. data were analyzed using t-test for repeated measures (p < 0.05). the results showed very important adaptations with an increase in velocity strength (7.8%, p < 0.05), explosive strength (8.1%, p < 0.05) and agility (6.4%, p < 0.05). moreover, the training program allowed for some metabolic adaptations, such as anaerobic power (30.5 and 37.5%, p < 0.05), and the total time the players could stand at the yo-yo test, respectively. aerobic power, measured by vo2max, also increased (8.1%, p < 0.05). the results suggest that the program proposed was able to create positive motor capacities responses that were observed in the lasting training posterior effect.
Hematological profile of beef cattle with divergent residual feed intake, following feed deprivation
Gomes, Rodrigo da Costa;Siqueira, Renata Farinelli de;Ballou, Michael Alan;Stella, Tiago Roberto;Leme, Paulo Roberto;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2011000900019
Abstract: the objective of this work was to characterize the hematological profiles of steers and bulls, according to residual feed intake (rfi), after feed deprivation. twenty?month?old nellore steers and bulls were fed feedlot diets for 70 and 56 days, respectively. rfi was calculated as the difference between actual feed intake and expected feed intake. more and less efficient steers and bulls, according to rfi, were subjected to 24 hours of food deprivation. blood was sampled prior to and following the withdrawal period. hematological analyses included total and differential white blood cell count, red blood cell count and morphology, and plasma glucose concentration. variation in rfi did not influence plasma glucose concentration or blood cell profiles. glucose concentrations in bulls decreased from 114 to 97 mg dl?1, but remained unchanged in steers, and the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio increased from 0.39 to 0.57 following deprivation. hematological profiles do not differ between more and less efficient steers and bulls, according to rfi.

Animais medicinais: conhecimento e uso entre as popula??es ribeirinhas do rio Negro, Amazonas, Brasil
Silva, Andréa Leme da;
Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-81222008000300005
Abstract: the article documents the use of animals in the home medicine among riverine populations from the negro river, state of amazonas, brazil. data were collected through interviews and observations concerning to the knowledge and everyday practices of the use of medicinal animals. about 60 animal species are known with medicinal purposes. the knowledge is well distributed between sexes (men and women) and localities (urban and rural). the use of medicinal animals is embedded in etiological concepts and involves a complex cosmological vision of the cure process. the rural exodus and the facilitated access to the western medicine may be promoting the loss of the traditional knowledge, which can be mitigated through the valorization and transmission of this knowledge to the future generations.
Entre tradi??es e modernidade: conhecimento ecológico local, conflitos de pesca e manejo pesqueiro no rio Negro, Brasil
Silva, Andréa Leme da;
Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1981-81222011000100009
Abstract: the paper outlines an anthropological analysis of the artisanal fisheries in the rio negro, brazilian amazonia, concerning customary versus external rules determined by governmental institutions. field data were obtained from opened-end interviews with fishermen, local leaderships and documentary research. fishing spots and toponymies were georreferencied with the help of key informants between 2005 and 2006. it was cited 120 fishing spots used by 67 interviewed fishermen. the increase of recreational and commercial fisheries has intensified the conflicts for fisheries access, which has been perceived as a threat of collapse to the natural fisheries stocks in the rio negro.
