On the etiology of an outbreak of winter dysentery in dairy cows in Brazil

Abstract: winter dysentery (wd) is a seasonal infectious disease described worldwide that causes a marked decrease in milk production in dairy cows. in the northern hemisphere, where the disease is classically recognized, bovine coronavirus (bcov) has been assigned as a major etiologic agent of the disease. nonetheless, in the southern hemisphere, an in-deep etiological survey on wd cases had not been carried out. this study aimed to survey for bcov by nested-rt-pcr, rotavirus by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (page) and elisa, bacteria by classical bacteriological methods and pcr for virulence factors and parasites by sugar flotation test on fecal samples of 21 cows from a farm during an outbreak of wd in s?o paulo state, southeastern brazil. bcov was detected in all 21 samples, while rotavirus was detected in two symptomatic cows. escherichia coli, yersinia intermedia, providencia rustigianii proteus penneri, klebsiella terrigena and enterobacter aglomerans were detected in samples from both asymptomatic and healthy cows in different associations. the study of e. coli virulence factors revealed that the strains isolated were all apathogenic. cysts of eimeria sp. and eggs of strongyloidea were detected at low numbers in four of the symptomatic cows, with one co-infestation. these results suggest bcov as the main etiologic agent of the cases of wd in brazil, a conclusion that, with the clinical and epidemiological patterns of the disease studied herein, match those already described elsewhere. these findings give basis to the development of preventive measures and contribute to the understanding of the etiology of wd.

Abstract: domestic violence again children and adolescents currently constitutes an important issue for discussion by social movements and civil society. recognized in recent decades as a social problem in brazil, it is one of the components of the debates about the exercise of justice in brazil. this article seeks to discuss the existing relationship between the social conflicts involving childhood and adolescence and the judicial system through an analysis of how this problem is treated by the criminal courts in santa maria, a municipality of 266 thousand people, 300 kilometers from the capital of rio grande do sul state. to do so, it examined how these social conflicts are handled by the formal mechanisms of social control and the procedures adopted by legal authorities in response to the legal conflicts and the types of sentences attributed to these criminal court actions. the study sought to understand the prevailing elements in the decisions, based on a characterization of the population that accesses this system.

Abstract: Objectives: to establish nursing assistance to a patient in contact isolation with Klebsiella spp. and diabetic ketoacidosis complications into Intensive Care Unit; to identify nursing diagnoses according to Lynda Juall Carpenito and to establish and to implement the nursing care plan. Methods: study of case, carried through from May 19th to June 4 th 2008. Data had been collected into clinical handbook and daily physical examination. After that, according nursing’s description, we identified health problems to elaborate nursing daily plan associated with nursing diagnoses by Lynda Juall Carpenito to guide nursing assistance. Results: data were presented by nursing’s description and in a figure, nursing diagnoses, results and nursing prescription constituting nursing assistance plan. The following nursing diagnoses were identified: anxiety, integrity of harmed skin, social isolation, risk for infection, risk of infection transmission, risk for aspiration and risk for alteration of body temperature. Data were analyzed and discussed according to literature. Conclusion: nursing diagnoses offered the direction to nursing intervention: control diabetes another case of diabetic ketoacidosis and control Klebsiella spp. infection to the patient and transmission to other people.

Abstract: descreve-se a pesquisa de bcov e rotavírus em 13 mostras fecais de vacas de surtos de disenteria utilizando uma nested pcr dirigida ao gene rdrp e page, respectivamente. todas as amostras fecais foram positivas para bcov e nenhuma delas apresentou-se positiva para rotavírus em page. o encontro de coronavírus bovino em amostras fecais de vacas com disenteria sugere que este vírus possa ser o agente primário envolvido na etiologia dos casos aqui relatados.

Abstract: with the aim of isolating leptospira spp., blood serum, kidney, liver and genital tract of 137 female swine (40 sows and 97 gilts) and also urine samples from 22 sows were collected in a slaughterhouse in the state of s?o paulo, from april 2003 to august 2004. four isolates were obtained from animals that presented microagglutination test (mat) titers > 100 for the serovar pomona and one was obtained from an animal negative by mat in which leptospira was isolated from the liver and reproductive tract. the presence of leptospiral dna was investigated by pcr, and positive results were found in kidneys of 11 females, liver of two, genital tract of two and urine of one of them. nephrosis, interstitial multifocal nephritis, moderate to severe changing, hyalines cylinders and hemorrhagic focuses, hepatic and uterine horns congestion were histological lesions observed in higher frequency in animals positive for leptospira. the silver impregnation (warthin starry) confirmed the presence of spirochetes in renal tubules of four females with positive leptospira cultures from kidneys. the serogroup of the five isolates was identified as pomona by cross agglutination with reference polyclonal antibodies. molecular characterization of the isolates was carried out by variable-number tandem-repeats analysis. all the isolates revealed a pattern distinct from the l. interrogans pomona type strain, but identical to a previously identified pattern from strains isolated in argentina belonging to serovar pomona.

Abstract: Several wireless sensor network applications ought to decide the intrinsic variance between energy efficient communication and the requirement to attain preferred quality of service (QoS) such as packet delivery ratio, delay and to reduce the power consumption of wireless sensor nodes. In order to address this challenge, we propose the Power Aware Routing Protocol (PARP), which attains application-specified communication delays at low energy cost by dynamically adapting transmission power and routing decisions. Extensive simulation results prove that the proposed PARP attains better QoS and reduced power consumption.

Abstract: Mobile phones and other electronic devices are emitting radiations that will provide harmful effects to the human health. In order to measure the radiation, an innovative low cost measurement system is proposed in this paper. The ideology is to simplify the circuit’s value by converting a voltage detecting circuit to a field detecting circuit by finding an optimum resistance on trial and error basis. The requirement for a trial and error technique is to not allow too high or too low resistance which can be either short or open, resulting provides more damage to the circuit.
Ant Lion Optimization Approach for Load Frequency Control of Multi-Area Interconnected Power Systems  [PDF]

Abstract: This work proposes a novel nature-inspired algorithm called Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO). The ALO algorithm mimics the search mechanism of antlions in nature. A time domain based objective function is established to tune the parameters of the PI controller based LFC, which is solved by the proposed ALO algorithm to reach the most convenient solutions. A three-area interconnected power system is investigated as a test system under various loading conditions to confirm the effectiveness of the suggested algorithm. Simulation results are given to show the enhanced performance of the developed ALO algorithm based controllers in comparison with Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bat Algorithm (BAT) and conventional PI controller. These results represent that the proposed BAT algorithm tuned PI controller offers better performance over other soft computing algorithms in conditions of settling times and several performance indices.
Obtaining Optimal Solution by Using Very Good Non-Basic Feasible Solution of the Transportation and Linear Programming Problem  [PDF]

Abstract: For the transportation problem, Sharma and Sharma [1] have given a very computationally efficient heuristic (runs in O(c*n2) time) to give very good dual solution to transportation problem. Sharma and Prasad [2] have given an efficient heuristic (complexity O(n3) procedure to give a very good primal solution (that is generally non-basic feasible solution) to transportation problem by using the very good dual solution given by Sharma and Sharma [2]. In this paper we use the solution given by Sharma and Prasad [2] to get a very good Basic Feasible Solution to transportation problem, so that network simplex (worst case complexity (O(n3*(log(n))) can be used to reach the optimal solution to transportation problem. In the second part of this paper, we give a simple heuristic procedure to get a very good BFS to linear programming problem from the solution given by Karmarkar [3] (that generally produces a very good non-basic feasible solution in polynomial time (O(n5.5)). We give a procedure to obtain a good BFS for LP by starting from the solution given by Karmarkar [3]. We note that this procedure (given here) is significantly different from the procedure given in [4].

Abstract: Power consumption of sensor node is analyzed in this paper. In order to analyze the energy consumption, the node model is simulated using Proteus Software tool. The proposed sensor nodes power characteristics are measured by using different combinations of microprocessors and sensors. Using this, the energy consumption of the node is calculated. This is a cost-effective method and provides appropriate power model for specific applications.
