Cardiovascular Diabetology , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2840-11-75
Abstract: Twelve Yucatan swine were induced hyperglycemic with a single STZ dose intravenously to ablate pancreatic β-cells. After two months, each animal received one XIENCE V? (EES) and one Taxus Liberte (PES) stent, respectively, in each coronary artery. After three months, vascular healing was assessed by angiography and histomorphometry. Comparative in vitro effects of everolimus and paclitaxel (10-5?M–10-12?M) after 24 hours on carotid endothelial (EC) and smooth muscle (SMC) cell viability under hyperglycemic (42?mM) conditions were assayed by ELISA. Caspase-3 fluorescent assay was used to quantify caspase-3 activity of EC treated with everolimus or paclitaxel (10-5?M, 10-7?M) for 24 hours.After 3?months, EES reduced neointimal area (1.60?±?0.41?mm, p?<?0.001) with trends toward reduced % diameter stenosis (11.2?±?9.8%, p?=?0.12) and angiographic late-loss (0.28?±?0.30?mm, p?=?0.058) compared to PES (neointimal area: 2.74?±?0.58?mm, % diameter stenosis: 19.3?±?14.7%, late loss: 0.55?±?0.53?mm). Histopathology revealed increased inflammation scores (0.54?±?0.21 vs. 0.08?±?0.05), greater medial necrosis grade (0.52?±?0.26 vs. 0.0?±?0.0), and persistently elevated fibrin scores (1.60?±?0.60 vs. 0.63?±?0.41) with PES compared to EES (p?<?0.05). In vitro, paclitaxel significantly increased (p?<?0.05) EC/SMC apoptosis/necrosis at high concentrations (≥10-7?M), while everolimus did not affect EC/SMC apoptosis/necrosis within the dose range tested. In ECs, paclitaxel (10-5?M) significantly increased caspase-3 activity (p?<?0.05) while everolimus had no effect.After 3?months, both DES exhibited signs of delayed healing in a STZ-induced diabetic swine model. PES exhibited greater neointimal area, increased inflammation, greater medial necrosis, and persistent fibrin compared to EES. Differential effects of everolimus and paclitaxel on vascular cell viability may potentially be a factor in regulating delayed healing observed with PES. Further investigation of molecular mechanisms
Librarians and Marketing: An Ambiguous Relationship Kütüphaneciler ve Pazarlama: Belirsizlikler Ta yan Bir li ki
Rejean Savard
Türk Kütüphanecili?i , 1996,
Abstract: While librarians show a growing interest for marketing, their concept of marketing seems inaccurate. Librarians' outlook is mostly organizational, and focused on salesand product-oriented strategies which fail to embrace a truly client-centered marketing orientation. After a brief review of the literature, the author reports on a qualitative study confirming that the marketing orientation, as defined by experts, is insufficiently developed among librarians. Kütüphanecilerin pazarlama konusuna olan ilgileri artmakla beraber, pazarlama kavram konusundaki bilgileri hatal g rünmektedir. Kütüphaneciler, genelde kurumsal bir yakla m benimsemi g rünmektedirler ve üzerinde yo unla t klar sat ve-ürün odakl stratejiler, ger ek anlamda mü teri-odakl pazarlama yakla m n kapsamaktan uzakt r. Yazar, konuyla ilgili yay nlar k saca g zden ge irdikten sonra, kütüphaneciler aras nda, uzmanlarca tan mlanan pazarlama y netiminin yeterince geli medi ini do rulayan niteliksel bir ara t rma hakk nda bilgi vermektedir.

First Record of the European Rusted Flea Beetle, Neocrepidodera ferruginea (Scopoli, 1763), in North America (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini)
Laurent LeSage,Karine Savard
Psyche , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/387564
Abstract: The European rusted flea beetle Neocrepidodera ferruginea (Scopoli, 1763) is reported for the first time from Québec and Ontario, Canada. It was likely introduced into southern Ontario at an international port on the Great Lakes in early 1970s, or possibly earlier in the 1960s. However, the exact location and date of introduction could not be precisely determined. The flea beetle has since dispersed northeastwards and reached Aylmer, north of Ottawa River, in Québec, by 2003. This is about 375 km from Niagara Falls, where the oldest known specimens were collected in 1977. In 2009, various wild habitats and cultivated areas of Aylmer were surveyed. The host plants of the larvae could not be determined, but adults were swept from many plant species including various weeds and cultivated grasses: Alopecurus pratense (meadow foxtail), Dactylis glomerata (orchard-grass), Festuca rubra (red fescue-grass), and Poa pratensis (Kentucky blue-grass). Adults were also collected from flowers of several weeds: Aster sp. (undetermined species), Aster novae-angliae (New England aster), Ambrosia artemisiifolia (small ragweed), Echium vulgare (viper’s bugloss), Nasturtium officinale (water cress), Melilotus alba (white sweet-clover), Hypericum perforatum (common St. John’s-wort), Lythrum salicaria (purple loosestrife), Ranunculus acris (buttercup), and Solidago spp. (goldenrods). Since larvae are known to develop inside the roots and central stems of cereals, this new alien species represents a threat to Canadian agriculture, particularly if it reaches the Prairies in western Canada, where cereals represent a considerable part of their economy. European rusted flea beetle and Altise ferrugineuse européenne are suggested for the English and French common names of this flea beetle, respectively.
A Study of the Cyclotron Gas-Stopping Concept for the Production of Rare Isotope Beams
M. Sternberg,G. Savard
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1016/j.nima.2008.08.038
Abstract: The proposed cyclotron gas-stopping scheme for the efficient thermalization of intense rare isotope beams is examined. Simulations expand on previous studies and expose many complications of such an apparatus arising from physical effects not accounted for properly in previous work. The previously proposed cyclotron gas-stopper geometry is found to have a near null efficiency, but extended simulations suggest that a device with a much larger pole gap could achieve a stopping efficiency approaching roughly 90% and at least a 10 times larger acceptance. However, some of the advantages that were incorrectly predicted in previous simulations for high intensity operation of this device are compromised.
A Routine Activity Approach: Assessing Victimization by Gender in Transit Environments and Other Public Locations  [PDF]
Dennis M. Savard
Advances in Applied Sociology (AASoci) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/aasoci.2018.81004
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine how transit environments and other public spaces shape women’s and men’s victimization for simple assault, aggravated assault, sexual assault, robbery, and kidnapping crimes. This research applies routine activities theory to examine how everyday activities shape victimization within these environments. Using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ 2014 National Incident-Based Reporting System, this research finds that women were more likely to be victimized in certain spaces such as shopping centers and transit terminals. Regarding certain violent crimes, it was also discovered that women were more likely to be robbed at shopping centers, grocery stores, parking lots/garages, and transit terminals. It is argued that understanding the vulnerability of simple assault, aggravated assault, sexual assault, robbery, and kidnapping victimization women have in transit environments and other public spaces may provide useful insight regarding preventing crime in these locations.
O inavaliável em uma sociedade de desconfian?a
Haroche, Claudine;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022011000300014

Abstract: reflecting on the purposes of university, this essay enquires as to the very possibility of teaching, and more than that, to the possibility of knowledge and meaning in contemporary societies, in which the conditions for the incorporation and transmission of knowledges are in disarray: an uncertainty, sometimes radical, about oneself and about the other paves the way to a profound psychic insecurity. the continual sensorial fluxes trigger a novel division of the work of the senses, highlighting the role of vision in detriment of the remaining senses, inducing a redistribution of the relations between sensation, perception and reflection, and strengthening the contingency, the instability, the uncertainty that are found at the heart of the culture and education crisis. the thinking shrinks, translated into a specialization, a compartmentalization of the knowledges. what kind of personality and of conscience, what form of sensibility is stimulated by such education? what does the word conscience mean these days? can we still speak of critical activity? the individual, original thinking seems to have declined in the face of the corporation, of the group, of the collective legitimized by the number, the quantity, the demands for productivity and the evaluation by managers, and tends after that to become more and more homogeneous and conformist. nevertheless, the essay seeks to show that these features, not being new, have just been accelerated and intensified by contemporaneity, and paradoxically do not deprive us of all hope as to the purposes of university and to the possibilities of critical thinking.
Maneiras de ser, maneiras de sentir do indivíduo hipermoderno
Haroche, Claudine;
ágora: Estudos em Teoria Psicanalítica , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14982004000200003
Abstract: the fluidity of the contemporary society, intrinsically destituted by limitations, induces structural modifications, susceptible of putting in grounds the same possibility of structuralization, even so at the existence of the i. it is questioned here if the reasons - most fundamentally the capacity of feeling - declined to "feeling", separated from the experimentation of feeling, wouldn't them be, now, synonym of sensation.
