Abstract: Lutzomyia evansi is a phlebotomine insect endemic to Colombia’s Caribbean coast and is considered the main vector of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in the region. Specific studies of the direct effects generated by bacteria in the digestive tract of the insect vectors, under Leishmania infantum using in vitro models, represent a novel alternative as a control strategy for the transmission of leishmaniasis and also provide the opportunity to detect natural products or antimicrobial peptides with different biological activities. In this study, we evaluate the leishmanicidal and antimicrobial activities of Pantoea ananatis, Ochrobactrum anthropi and Enterobacter cloacae, isolated from the digestive tract of Lutzomyia evansi and the susceptibility of these bacteria to commonly used antibiotics. The antagonistic effect of Pantoea ananatis, Ochrobactrum anthropi and Enterobacter cloacae was evaluated against six species of human pathogenic bacteria and against stationary (Metacyclic-like) and exponential promastigotes (Procyclic-like) of Leishmania

Abstract: the limited publications on the dynamics of echinoids on the coast of chile, despite its ecological significance to marine benthic communities, have hindered the understanding of the importance of this group on benthic communities and the proposal of appropriate conservation and management measures. the objective of this work was to study the vertical and temporal variability of early stages of echinoids during spring-summer period in a southern channel of southern chile and associate it, in the particular case of loxechinus albus, with the reproductive status of adults individuals. for this, i) daily samples of plankton in three depth strata were collected, every 15 days from october 2005 to february 2006, ii) post-settlers on artificial substrates were monitored and iii) the gonad somatic index was obtained for adult specimens of l. albus. planktonic larval stages of arbacia dufresnei, loxechinus albus, pseudechinus magellanicus and ophiuroidea, were identified, as well as ophiuroidea and l. albus post-settlement. larvae of l. albus in plankton coincided with a decrease of gonad index in adults of this species, whereas post-settlers were observed 15 days after the longest period of larval density in the plankton. although information on a. dufresnei and p. magellanicus reproduction in adults was not collected, autumn-winter period has been reported as the period of maximum larval abundance. echinoids larvae were observed in restricted periods, more frequently on the sea surface at night and in low density compared with previous studies.

Abstract: the queen conch, strombus gigas (strombidae), is a species of great ecological and socioeconomic importance in the caribbean area of colombia. however, it is currently catalogued as "vulnerable"; there is limited information concerning the bacterial species associated with conch and important in the management of hatcheries for higher productivity and safety of these gastropods. in this study, we used a microbiology and molecular approach using the 16s-23s intergenic region, the 16s rdna analysis and sequencing to determine the bacterial populations associated with queen conch (s. gigas). also, the capacity to grow in marine agar and selective culture media was used to evaluate the composition of bacteria associated. the 28 total samples analysed we found the number of bacteria recovered after aerobic culture about 10??6 cfu ml-1 and most belong to the vibrionaceae family in the order of 10??5 ufc ml-1. the molecular results of the spacer regions between the 16 and 23s genes from the different analyzed samples indicated a great complexity in the bacterial population associated to s. gigas. the sequencing of the amplicons of 16s rdna identifies pseudoalteromonas sp, halomonas sp., psycrobacter sp., cobetia sp., pseudomonas sp. and vibrios sp. this suggests these bacteria can play an important role as components of the bacterial community associated to s. gigas. this information can help to improve both the management of hatcheries for higher productivity and for the implementation for the conservation processes of colombian s. gigas.
