Abstract: Although well known, Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that remains widely studied because of its high pathogenic potential and its ability to develop resistance to antibiotics routinely used in clinical practice. The present study investigated the occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hamburgers and sandwiches sold in supermarkets and fast food outlets in Salvador, BA, Brazil. Fifty samples of frozen raw hamburgers (25: beef and 25: chicken) and 50 samples of ready-to-eat sandwiches (25: beef and 25: chicken) were collected and investigated for the presence of MRSA. MRSA was present in 32% of the hamburgers and 8% of the sandwiches. The frequency of MRSA was higher in the samples containing chicken meat. However, the statistical analysis showed no association between MRSA presence and the type of meat investigated (P > 0.05). The high prevalence of MRSA in hamburgers and the presence of the microorganism in ready-to-eat sandwiches are worrying and indicate the need for better control during food preparation to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Abstract: introduction: vision is considered one of the most important means of capturing the information from the environment. it is central to the process of child development. objectives: aware of the contribution of vision on balance maintenance and on human biopsychosocial development, and considering the factors resulting from loss or impairment of vision, this research objected to analyze the balance on orthostatic posture of low vision children, from 8 to 11 years old, of both genders (experimental group) comparing with normal children balance of both genders and same age (control group) using stabilometric parameters. materials and methods: a stabilometric plataform was used to measure the postural oscillations (radial displacement and displacement speed). results: considering the experimental and control groups radial displacement rates (media and standard diversion), it could be observed that there was no significant difference on the closed eyes condition (p > 0,05). on the opened eyes condition, there was a bigger radial displacement of the experimental group comparing to the control group (p < 0,05). analysing the displacement speed rates of the control and experimental groups, it could be observed that in both conditions (closed and opened eyes) the control group presented the higher displacement speed when compared to the experimental one (p < 0,01). conclusion: after the presented results, we concluded that low vision might have a negative influence on the orthostatic posture stability as well as on the postural adjustment speed, damaging the body balance.

Abstract: this paper describes, for the first time, the cytogenetic characteristics of some south atlantic nereidid polychaetes, collected in paranaguá bay, southeast brazil. mitotic chromosomes were obtained from regenerative tissue after amputation of the posterior tips of the animals. seven species, of five genera, were analyzed: 1) platynereis dumerilii (2n=28; fn=56), which is considered cosmopolitan but is suspected to be a species-complex. karyotypic divergences were detected when comparing chromosome morphology and nor distribution from paraná and north american populations (2n=28; fn=56), 2) perinereis vancaurica (2n=28; fn=56), p. anderssoni (2n=28; fn=56) and p. ponteni (2n=28; fn=54). karyotypes and nor distribution allowed us to relate p. anderssoni (paraná, brazil) to p. macropus (italy), the former showing a derived karyotype. the remaining karyotypes of species of perinereis showed independent divergences; 3) pseudonereis palpata (2n=28; fn=56), known from the south and south-east coast of brazil; 4) nereis oligohalina (2n=28; fn=50), occurring in the south atlantic. the last two species share the conservative chromosome number of the family; and 5) laeonereis culveri, occurring in both the south and north atlantic, has the highest chromosome number in the family (2n=38). we discuss the important role of karyotypic evolution in the origin of modern families of polychaetes, when the current chromosomal diversity (2n=6 to 2n=64) was developed, followed by a period of chromosomal stability of nereidid polychaetes during the dispersion which followed the pangea breakup, with the predominance of divergences of neutral chromosomal changes, involving mainly pericentric inversions and nor amplifications.

Abstract: The human hair follicle, a mini-organ formed with neuroectodermal-meso-dermal interaction, is a complex structure, in the active steady state (anagen) the dermal papilla can be considered as a ball of extracellular matrix, surrounding specialized fibroblasts. The cross-talk of dermal papilla with neighbouring matrix cells results in the maintenance of hair fibre production. This study aimed to investigate the proliferative potential of the compound TrichotechTM, a phytocomplex obtained from a mixture of essential oils, on cultured human fibroblasts and its ability to modulate the gene expression of FGF-7 and FGF-10. TrichotechTM was shown to enhance fibroblasts proliferation in concentrations of 0.5% to 2.0%, and also increase the percentage of cells in the S/G2/M phases of the cell cycle. TrichotechTM at both 1.0% and 2.0% induced a statistically significant effect on wound healing assay compared to the untreated control. We examined the interaction between cell survival (PI3K/Akt) and mitogenic (Ras/MAPK) signal transduction pathways after TrichotechTM treatment (1.0% and 2.0%) on the fibroblast cell line. TrichotechTM caused phosphorylation of ERK1/2, as well as greater phosphorylation of MEK in comparison with both the untreated control and ERK1/2. PI3K and AKT, however, were not shown to be significantly more phosphorylated following TrichotechTM exposure. To verify the relative expression of mRNA for FGF-7 and FGF-10 genes, a real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) protocol was used. Results show the increase in mRNA expression by fibroblasts after treatment with TrichotechTM. In both concentrations tested, TrichotechTM was found to increase the expression of FGF-7 and FGF-10. Sirius red staining allows for rapid assessment of collagen content, it showed a significant increase in collagen content in treated fibroblasts. Further investigation concerning TrichotechTM could be helpful towards the development of new bioactive phytocomplexes for dermatological and trichological use.
