Abstract:

The nature of organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and their physical-chemical properties exert immediate action of control on live systems, which has justified their use in agricultural practices. Their long life makes them a persistent ecological aggressor and biomagnifier. They reach foods by biotic and abiotic means, and are absorbed and accumulate in adipose tissue. In lactation processes, they are excreted in milk through the mobilization of fats. Diverse studies have identified them as neurotoxic, affecting reproductive processes, altering the immunological response and act as endocrine disruptors. An analysis was made of the content of organochlorine pesticides in twenty-one samples of infant milk formulas marketed in the south of Mexico City in 2010. The determinations were made following the protocols of the International Dairy Federation, by means of gas chromatography with electron capture detector, and the majority presence was found of α-HCH (100%), β-HCH (95.2%), γ-HCH (90.5%), aldrin (85.7%), heptachlor (80.9%) and heptachlor epoxide (80.9%) with mean values of 0.24, 0.13, 0.32, 0.62, 0.92 and 0.18 μg/kg of fat, respectively;all below the limits permitted by the Codex Alimentarius. With null or lower recurrence and in lowerquantities, the family of DDT, endrin, endrin aldehyde and the endosulphanes were quantified.

Abstract: It has been documented that increased vegetable consumption is associated with preventive effects in some public health problems such as obesity and some chronic noncommunicable diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the association of nutritional status with vegetable consumption in adolescents from Technical High Schools in Mexico City. A sample of 2368 adolescents was obtained who were applied a questionnaire of frequency food consumption and anthropometric measurements were taken, the nutritional diagnosis was obtained with Who Anthro Plus program. The data obtained were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS version 20.0 for Windows Statistics®. When the correlation of frequency consumption of vegetables with nutritional status, in the final phase, It found that teens who never ate vegetables were more likely to develop obesity (36.0% GI and 36.10% GC), compared with teens who consumed daily (8.9% GI and 2.10% GC), existing difference highly significant. The teenagers of the Technical High School in Mexico City in the intervention group presented a basal daily intake of 15.7% and after the intervention their intake increased to 21.3%. With respect to the control group it started with a daily intake of 12.6% to 14.9% increasing it. An increase was achieved in the daily consumption of vegetables in adolescents of both groups so it is concluded that the intervention was successful.

Abstract: Background: Several studies have described the physician’s attitudes, perceptions, knowledge and experience about the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), reporting among their results that these therapies are usually perceived as useful, which has favor the increase in its use and recommendation, both personally and in the medical practices. Despite the relevance that CAM has regained in the last years, in Mexico there are no studies developed about this topic nor in this population. Methodology: A descriptive and transversal study was developed. The participants answer a survey designed and validated for Mexican population (α = 0.72). The survey was applied to the doctors in a pediatric tertiary care hospital, the survey included demographic data, history of personal use of CAM, recommendation to patients and attitudes towards CAM. Averages, standard deviations and association statistics (χi2) were calculated. Results: A total of 249 physicians were included: 51% turned to CAM, primarily to treat acute conditions in a complementary manner to conventional treatment. A third of the participants recommended CAM to their patients. The use of CAM by the physician was the only factor related to their recommendation of these treatments. The most commonly used and recommended therapies by doctors were homeopathy and herbal medicine. 72% consider it useful to have knowledge in CAM and 67% want more information about these therapies. 51% agree that the CAM should be included in the medical career. Conclusions: Half of the respondents use CAM, and one-third recommend. The most used therapies were homeopathy and herbal medicine. Most doctors consider the knowledge about CAM useful and want to have more information, but only half of them agreed on its inclusion in the career of medicine.
Dilación del desove de Modiolus capax (Bivalvia: Mytilidae)

Revista de Biología Tropical , 1998,
Abstract: the capacity of modiolus capax to delay spawning and to hold mature gametes for long periods, was analyzed in sexually mature organisms subjected to cold water and food rations higher than those for maintenance. the experimental group, 200 mussels collected in august from bahia de los angeles, baja california, mexico, was subjected to 19±2 °c, temperature comparable to that in the natural environment during autumn and early winter; the daily food rations, delivered in open flow, were equivalent to 0.5-1.0% of the mussel?s dry soft body weight. the effectiveness of the experimental treatment was verified every month in a sample of 16 mussels; for contrast, a sample from bahia de los angeles was also analyzed. the assessed variables were general condition and gonadosomatic indices and for the histological study of the gonads, a maturity scale with eight stages was designed. in september the mussels from the natural environment were in the initial phase of post-spawning; by december they were in late post-spawning or rest. in the experimental group there were no spontaneous spawnings and general condition and gonadosomatic indices remained consistently higher than in the natural environment, however, by the eight-week of treatment the gonads showed evidences of incipient reabsorption. it is proposed that the natural reproductive cycle, mass spawning in summer and rest in late autumn and early winter, might be limiting the mussel?s capacity to retain mature gametes.

The capacity of Modiolus capax to delay spawning and to hold mature gametes for long periods, was analyzed in sexually mature organisms subjected to cold water and food rations higher than those for maintenance. Case Reports in Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/575470
Abstract: We report a case of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome with central nervous system involvement, in a patient with late human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection starting antiretroviral therapy, in whom Strongyloides stercoralis larvae and Cryptococcus neoformans were isolated antemortem from cerebrospinal fluid. Our patient was not from an endemic region for the parasite, so strongyloidiasis was not originally suspected. For this reason, we conclude that Strongyloides stercoralis infection should be suspected in HIV-infected patients starting antiretroviral therapy in order to avoid potential fatal outcomes.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the perception that children and their parents have about the family functioning relating to childhood obesity. A qualitative study, based on the family systemic theory, was developed. The participants were four children between 10 and 13 years old, with diagnosed obesity, overweight and normal weight, and five of their parents (four females and one male). The techniques used were semi structure interviews, which were audio-taped and transcribed to an electronic format. A thematic content analysis was applied, obtaining six categories: communication, beliefs about weight and body image, beliefs about food, family patterns, controlling eating and attempted solutions. The findings suggest the existence of paradox communication in the families, with contradictory and ambiguous instructions about the eating behavior of the child; beliefs about an ideal weight and type of body for children and adults; ideas about the nutritional qualities of the food that classify them as healthy or prejudicial; family norms that differ according to the role of who buys, cooks or allows the ingest of specific foods; children referring difficulties to control the food intake, while the parents point out that someone else is responsible for that lack of control; also, some strategies that the family has tried unsuccessfully to control the children weight were mentioned, such as diet or nutritional treatments. In summary, we conclude that the perception of childhood obesity is shared by parents and children, where the family interactions emerge as an element that maintains the children obesity having a lack of understatement about the necessary actions for the children’s healthy development.
