This study evaluated the performance from weaning to slaughter and carcass characteristics of 144 New Zealand White rabbits, from does fed with a reference diet or half-simplified diet containing 79.83% cassava by-product, allocated in iron cages, in a 2 x 3 factorialarrangement (two diets used for does and litters until weaning versus three diets supplied for animals from weaning to slaughter) with 12 replications and two animals per experimental unit. The supplied diets after weaning consisted of one reference and two half-simplified diets with 81.63% cassava by-product ensiled or not before its incorporation. Rabbits from mothers fed with the half-simplified diet gained less weight at weaning than rabbits fed with reference diet. Lower feed intake was observed for rabbits that received the maternity half-simplified diet until weaning, resulting in a better feed:gain ratio. The weight of carcass and commercial cuts were higher for animals fed with both reference diets: maternity and growth diets. The use of half-simplified diets with cassava by-product ensiled or not, from weaning to slaughter, reduced daily weight gain and feed intake; however,

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical composition and aerobic stability of corn grain silage, added with crude soybean, sunflower or urea. the following treatments, arranged in a completely randomized design, with four replications, were evaluated: corn grain; corn grain plus soybean grain; corn grain plus sunflower grain; and corn grain plus urea. plastic barrels with 200 kg of capacity were used as experimental silos and kept closed for nine months. chemical composition, dry matter and crude protein ruminal degradability, starch ruminal disappearance, and the aerobic stability of silages were evaluated. the addition of soybean, sunflower or urea on silages influenced the effective degradability of dry matter and crude protein, and the chemical composition, especially in relation to crude protein and ether extract contents. the addition of 20% soybean, sunflower or urea (1%) in corn grain silage improves chemical composition, but decreases the effective degradability of dry matter and crude protein. urea addition to moist corn grain silage reduces losses on dry matter and improves the aerobic stability.

Abstract: fourty beef cows (330 kg) were allotted to a completely randomized design, in a 2x2 factorial scheme (two supplementation levesl [0.5 and 1.0% lw] and two energy sources [whole oat grain and ground corn grain]) to evaluate perfomance of animal grazing marandugrass (brachiaria brizantha hochst ex. a. rich stapf), during the dry season. supplements were formulated to contain 15% of crude protein (cp). average daily gain showed no difference among treatments (0.58 and 0.69 kg/d for oat, and 0.54 and 0.66 kg/d for corn, at levels of 0.5 and 1.0% lw, respectively). no difference was detected for carcass dressing among treatments, with average value of 46.12%. forage mass available was high, but quality was low, mainly as result of frost occurred in the period. average values for cp, neutral detergent fiber (ndf) and acid detergent fiber (adf) were 5.34, 74.95 and 47.66%, respectively. oat grain showed similar quality as corn for beef cow supplementation. considering high forage mass in the pasture, 0.5% lw supplementation showed higher economical efficiency.

Abstract: this paper shows the bayesian approach as an alternative to the classical analysis of nonlinear models for ruminal degradation data. the data set was obtained from a latin square experimental design, established for testing the ruminal degradation of dry matter, crude protein and fiber in neutral detergent of three silages: elephant grass (pennisetum purpureum schum) with bacterial inoculant or enzyme-bacterial inoculant and corn silage (zea mays l.). the incubation times were 0, 2, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. the parameter estimates of the equations fitted by both methods showed small differences, but by the bayesian approach it was possible to compare the estimates correctly, that does not happen with the frequentist methodology because it is much more restricted in the applications due to the demand for a larger number of presuppositions.

Abstract: the suitable evaluation of nutritional value of forages depends on the adoption of appropriate methodologies. forage quality is highly dependent of fermentation products, in case of silage, and the losses of soluble compounds and microorganisms activity in the case of hay. the theme "methodological advances in evaluation of preserved forage quality" at the 44th annual meeting of brazilian society of animal science has as main goals to highlight the more useful and particular methodological procedures for conserved forages and additional to the standard chemical analysis.. analytical procedures for preserved forage should suffer a standardization to permit comparisons of results obtained by the world wide laboratories. this review brings to discussion the description and systematization of important physical and chemical methods to be implemented in preserved forage evaluation. the methodological procedures available permit not only quantify, but also permit qualify the losses occurred during preservation process and across the aerobic exposition of the roughage source during feed out. it suggests that the adoption of any management strategies for conserved forages may depend on an evaluation accordingly fit to the losses observed in the overall process.
