Abstract: the main obstacle to the use of compost from urban waste in agriculture is the presence of heavy metals. once in the soil, their effect is accumulative and they may contaminate crops and water. the present study reports the evaluation of the chemical distributions of cu, pb, mn and zn in three different sized fractions (unsieved, < 1,18mm and > 1,18mm) of compost, by means of a sequencial extraction procedure and a chemometric analysis of the total content of all metals in each fraction. the pattern recognition methods showed significant differences in total heavy metal contents for the different fractions. the finest one was the most contaminated. meanwhile, this fraction presented lower amounts of metals in avaliable forms. this behavior can be attributed to the presence of metal particles in their elemental states in this fraction.

Abstract: sintered pr16fe76b8 magnets have been produced using the hydrogen decrepitation (hd) process and high-energy planetary ball milling. investigations have been carried out to evaluate the influence of the milling speed and time. the best magnetic properties obtained were br = (1020 ± 20) mt, μ0ihc = (1420 ± 30) mt and (bh)max/= (200 ± 4) kjm-3, for a magnet prepared with the alloy milled at 200 rpm for 4.5 ks. magnets prepared from this powder exhibited a superior intrinsic coercivity compared to that of magnets produced using low-energy ball milling. however, the remanence and energy product of the latter were somewhat lower. an important feature was the dramatic reduction in the processing time (about 90%). microstructural observation have shown that increasing the milling time and keeping constant the rotational mill speed caused an exponential grain size reduction in the sintered magnet. increasing the milling speed also reduced the grain size and influenced both remanence and intrinsic coercivity.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate with doppler echocardiography the reversibility of structural and hemodynamic changes in obeses after bariatric surgery. methods: twenty-three patients (19 women = 82.6%) were studied. mean age was 37.9 years. all subjects had class iii or class ii obesity with comorbidity and were submitted to bariatric surgery. clinical and echocardiographic evaluation were performed preoperatively, in 6 months and 3 years after surgery. results: preoperatively, the mean weight and blood pressure (bp) were respectively 128.7± 25.8 kg and 142.2 ± 16.2 / 92.2 ± 10.4 mmhg. postoperatively, they showed important body weight reduction in 6 months (97.6 ± 18.3 kg) and 3 years (83.6 ± 13.5 kg), and bp reduction in 6 months (128.5 ± 16.1/80.7 ± 9.9 mmhg) that remain stable in 3rd year. on echocardiogram, preoperatively, there was hypertrophy of the septum and posterior wall associated with normal diastolic dimension; the predominant lv geometric pattern was concentric remodeling (74%). at six months, thinning of the ventricular septum and lv posterior wall, and increase in lv diastolic dimension were demonstrated. at 3rd year, the predominant lv pattern was normal (69%), with reduction of lv mass and lv mass/height2 index. we noticed improved diastolic function, with an increased e/a ratio and a decreased lv isovolumic relaxation time. the myocardial performance index was obtained retrospectively in 13 patients and improved in 6 months. there was an increase of the ejection time in 6 months and an elevation of the ejection fraction in 3rd year, suggesting improvement of the lv systolic function. conclusion: the weight loss obtained with bariatric surgery promotes both structural and functional myocardial changes that improve cardiac performance.

Abstract: a case of chondromyxoid fibroma (cmf) arising from the sth right costovertebral junction and spreading into spinal canal causing spinal cord compression is presented. a myelotomography revealed a complete block at t5 level. the patient underwent a decompressive laminectomy with removal of an epidural tumor. this specimen was sent for pathological examination and interpreted as a cmf. the patient had a neurological improvement, post operative mri revealed a spinal cord free of compression, and we decided on the follow up of the case. two years later there was reccurrence of the tumor. a posterolateral access by costotransversectomy was made and the lesion was resected. the patient had a neurological improvement which persists on the follow up (two years, at present). clinical, radiologic and histologic findings, surgical management and recurrence are discussed. the pertinent literature is reviewed.
A fic o e o maravilhoso no discurso jornalístico =Fiction and the formidable in journalistic discourse
Elmir, Cláudio Pereira
Estudos Ibero Americanos , 2009,
This article studies the discourse functioning logic of última Hora newspaper, from Porto Alegre City (1960-1964), by acknowledging the presence of two relatively interdependent principles: fiction and the marvelous. Many signs of that presence are identified through the analysis of police news stories. Both principles contribute to realize that the periodical’s verbal expression may be associated with the fulfillment of common sense discourse in the written press.

Siqueira, Ivan Cláudio Pereira;
Pandaemonium Germanicum , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-88372011000100013
Abstract: jo?o guimar?es rosa was strongly influenced by the german literature, philosophy and music. the german tradition and its methods of associations suggested him to develop his own methodologies from the substrates provided by traditional brazilian songs. this paper shows the general effects of musical techniques in short-stories of sagarana, the influence of heidegger's philosophy and the use of the concept of wagner's grundmotiv in "o burrinho pedrês" and "sarapalha". finally, it is proposed some connections between "a hora e vez de augusto matraga" (rosa) and parsifal, by wagner.

Abstract: background: a significant number of patients with schistosomiasis develop the hepatosplenic form, with portal hypertension, in which bleeding caused by rupture of esophagogastric varices emerged as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. aim: to investigate the effects of splenectomy and ligature of the left gastric vein on risk factors for bleeding of esophagogastric varices in patients with schistosomiasis mansoni, hepatosplenic form, with a history of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. methods: the main risk factors of bleeding from esophagogastric varices were studied in 34 patients. the following parameters were investigated: 1) esophageal variceal pressure, measured by the endoscopic pneumatic balloon technique; 2) size, fundamental color, extension and red signs of esophageal varices, gastric varices and gastropathy of portal hypertension. the evaluations were performed in the preoperative period, immediate postoperative period (between the sixth and eighth postoperative days) and the sixth month of follow-up. results: the variceal pressure has fallen from 22.3+/-2.6 mmhg before surgery to 16.0+/-3.0 mmhg in the immediate postoperative period (p<0.001), reaching 13.3+/- 2.6 mmhg in the sixth month of follow-up. a significant reduction of the frequency of the parameters associated with a greater risk of hemorrhage was observed between the preoperative period and six-month follow-up, when the proportion of large esophageal varices (p<0.05), varices extending to the upper esophagus (p<0.05), bluish varices (p<0.01), varices with red signs (p<0.01) and gastropathy (p<0.05) decreased. conclusion: in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis with a previous history of variceal hemorrhage, splenectomy and gastric vein ligation was effective in reducing the main hemorrhagic risk factors until the sixth month of follow-up, indicating a good way to control the bleeding episodes.
