TOFFANELLI, CLáUDIA M.;BEDENDO, IVAN P.;
Fitopatologia Brasileira , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-41582002000100013
Abstract: the importance of maize bushy stunt caused by a phytoplasma is increasing due to successive corn (zea mays) cultivation. the pathogen is transmitted mainly by the leafhopper dalbulus maidis. in order to evaluate the effect of infective population of the vector on grain yield and severity of symptoms, ten-day old plants of the susceptible hybrid xlx-520 were inoculated with one, three, six and nine insects, for a four-day feeding period. control plants were infested with healthy insects or were not submitted to insect feeding. the most common symptoms observed were red leaves, stunt and ear proliferation. grain yield, kernel quality and the height of plants were reduced as the infective population increased. furthermore, the incidence and intensity of symptoms were greater as the infective population increased. yield reductions of 35.0, 53.7, 65.7, and 91.3% were obtained when plants were inoculated with one, three, six and nine infective insects, respectively. it is possible that a larger infective insect population results in a higher initial inoculum amount and consequently, a stronger effect of the disease on the plants.

Fitopatologia Brasileira , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-41582001000400012
Abstract: the effect of the phytoplasma on the development and yield of ten corn (zea mays) hybrids was evaluated. ten-day-old plants were experimentally inoculated using ten infective insects of dalbulus maidis/plant. infected and healthy plants were compared regarding symptoms and yield components. infected plants exhibited predominantly reddening of leaves, ear proliferation and stunting of different intensities. reduction in plant height and kernel yield varied among hybrids. reductions as high as 35% in plant height, 98% in kernel yield and number of grains/ear, 72% in ear size, 50% in number of lines/ear, and 18% in seed germination occurred in the most susceptible hybrids.

Histopathology of gills, kidney and liver of a Neotropical fish caged in an urban stream
Camargo, Marina M. P.;Martinez, Cláudia B. R.;
Neotropical Ichthyology , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252007000300013
Abstract: histological changes in gills, kidney and liver were used to evaluate the health of the neotropical fish species prochilodus lineatus, subjected to in situ tests for 7 days in a disturbed urban stream and in a reference site, during winter and summer. in fish caged in the urban stream the most common lesions were epithelial lifting, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the respiratory epithelium, lamellar fusion, and aneurysms in the gills; enlargement of the glomerulus, reduction of bowman's space, occlusion of the tubular lumen, cloudy swelling and hyaline droplet degeneration in the kidneys; hepatocytes with hypertrophy, cytoplasmic and nuclear degeneration, melanomacrophage aggregates, bile stagnation and one case of focal necrosis in the liver. the lesions were comparatively most severe in the liver. histopathology showed to be a very suitable biomarker for use in conjugation with the in situ test, because the seasonal variation did not interfere in the results and it was possible to differentiate the sites in the urban stream from the reference site.

Abstract: background - psychiatric comorbidity is observed in 40% of adult dermatological patients. acne vulgaris, in particular, is in the interest of psychodermatology because of its psychological and social stigmas. objective - to establish the relation between acne and the state of well-being. methods - this consisted of a case-control study with data collected from the world health organization well-being index, through interviews with two groups of 50 medical students, one with and other without acne. results - it was verified that 26% of the students from the case group and 24% from the control group presented from 0 to 4 points in at least one item. conclusions - although the majority of the patients presented attitudes and feelings related to acne, a statistically significant association between this dermatosis and low level of well-being was not demonstrated.
Acleotrema lamothei n. sp. (Monogenea: Diplectanidae) from the gills of Kyphosus incisor in Brazilian waters
Santos, Cláudia P.;Bianchi, Luciane G.;Gibson, David I.;
Revista mexicana de biodiversidad , 2008,
Abstract: a diplectanid monogenean, acleotrema lamothei n. sp., is described from the gills of the yellow sea chub kyphosus incisor (cuvier, 1831) in brazilian waters off rio de janeiro state. this species is distinguished by the facts that the male copulatory organ is armed with spines throughout most of its length, the ventral hamuli have a very long, stout outer root, which is slightly notched proximally, an inner root less than half the length of the outer root and a fine blade and point. it also differs from most species of the genus by the greater size of the haptor and its hard parts. this is the first record of a species of acleotrema johnston and tiegs, 1922 from south american waters.
