Aonde anda a onda?: notas sobre a recep o gaúcha da “novíssima onda baiana” = Where has the wave been?: notes about the gaucho reception of the “newest Bahian wave”
Carvalho, Maria do Socorro Silva
The article presents the preliminary results of the research project entitled “The new-new Bahian tred seen from afar”. The aim of the project is to learn how gauchos perceive films produced in Bahia between 2001 and 2011. The investigation is based on a comparison between Bahian literary production of the period, mainly featured movies, with the same time of movies exibit in cinemas in Porto Alegre. It is an attempt to understand how a set of films was interpreted by newspaper cinema critics, including not mentioning them, in Porto Alegre at the time the films were being exhibited in local theaters. The article points at central issues regarding Brazilian cinema today such as the important dimensions of the regionalization and cinema exhibition in Brazil.
Guess Who’s Off The Hook: Inventing Interracial Coupling In Global Art Cinema
Jayson Baker
Wide Screen , 2009,
Abstract: Black Studies scholar and critic, bell hooks, offers many insightful analyses of American life in her book Outlaw Culture. hooks levels a quick claim that Americans “have to go to films outside America to find any vision of redemptive love in films that depict interracial relationships, but she doesn't provide an analysis of a foreign film to illustrate her accusation. This work seeks to utilise hooks race theories to interrogate constructions of interracial relationships in select global art cinemas, particularly how these movies seek to understand postcolonial violations, transnational migration, and globalisation anxieties in Jean Luc Godard's Le Petit Soldat (1960), Tomas Guterrez Alea's Memories of Underdevelopment, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974). Framing this discussion is the forty-year span between the release of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Guess Who, which depict interracial coupling between a black male and white female in the late sixties and a white male and black female in 2005. Analysing the use of race in global cinema may allow American audiences the necessary critical distance to see how ‘other’ movies construct interracial relationships to instigate a form cultural atonement, an agenda hooks sees absent in American film yet fails to prove in foreign film.
The Poetry Of Reversibility And The Other In The English Patient
Gerry Coulter
Wide Screen , 2009,
Abstract: Those who lament the disappearance of poetry in our time would do well to look for its reappearance as cinema, for example Minghella’s The English Patient. Poetry was once a place for the “irruption of the body into the repressive interiorised space of language” and today, as visual languages become increasingly important, we find poetry (once oral, then written) moving increasingly into the visual.
Genre-%!$?Ing: Harmony Korine’s Cinema Of Poetry
Tom Austin O'Connor
Wide Screen , 2009,
Abstract: This study analyses Harmony Korine’s films according to the two distinct stages of his cinematic career thus far. The first phase incorporates his screenplays that were directed by Larry Clark – Kids and Ken Park. The second incorporates the films that he both writes and directs: Gummo and Julien Donkey-boy. All of Korine’s films are evaluated in the context of how they satirise and disempower his characters’ tendencies toward nihilism and alienation. The films that he both writes and directs, especially, are significant because they utilise Pier Paolo Pasolini’s notion of the cinema of poetry, which presents the diegetic realities of the films from wholly-subjective perspectives which, because they allow for poetic re-mediations of our perceptual habits, can re-write and transform any tendencies toward disaffection and desensitisation. All of Korine’s films reject common-sense and normalising representations for the perspectives of non-dominant voices or the poetic speakers of disenfranchised populations–especially the young, the poor, people with disabilities, and the mentally ill–which productively challenge their commonplace portrayals in the mass media.
Réflexions sur le cinéma direct
Xavier de France
Doc On-Line : Revista Digital de Cinema Documentário , 2008,
Abstract: The re ections about direct cinema presented here revolve aroundthe following question: how to account for the fact that the movement which encouraged the lmmakers of a certain age to reject the aesthetics of stylization that founded the dramatic arts, allow us to understand, on the one hand, some of the reasons that led the authors to seek different ways followed by other lmmakers and how, on the other hand, these same reasons hardly give account of the route followed by these authors and the bases of their originality? This is the question that seeks to provide a response through the analysis of three major documentary lmmakers: Dziga Vertov, Robert Flaherty and Jean Vigo. In a second stage, based on the concept of cinétranse developed by Jean Rouch, a rationalist methodology to direct lm is opposed to an empirical methodology.
