Suprasellar cysts: clinical presentation, surgical indications, and optimal surgical treatment

Abstract: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 73 consecutive patients with SSC who were treated between June 2002 and September 2009. Twenty-two patients were treated with VC and 51 with VCC. Outcome was assessed by clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging.The patients were divided into five groups based on age at presentation: age less than 1 year (n = 6), 1-5 years (n = 36), 6-10 years (n = 15), 11-20 years (n = 11), and 21-53 years (n = 5). The main clinical presentations were macrocrania (100%), motor deficits (50%), and gaze disturbance (33.3%) in the age less than 1 year group; macrocrania (75%), motor deficits (63.9%), and gaze disturbance (27.8%) in the 1-5 years group; macrocrania (46.7%), symptoms of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) (40.0%), endocrine dysfunction (40%), and seizures (33.3%) in the 6-10 years group; symptoms of raised ICP (54.5%), endocrine dysfunction (54.5%), and reduced visual field or acuity (36.4%) in the 11-20 years group; and symptoms of raised ICP (80.0%) and reduced visual field or acuity (40.0%) in the 21-53 years group. The overall success rate of endoscopic fenestration was 90.4%. A Kaplan-Meier curve for long-term efficacy of the two treatment modalities showed better results for VCC than for VC (p = 0.008).Different age groups with SSCs have different main clinical presentations. VCC appears to be more efficacious than VC.Suprasellar cysts (SSCs) are benign developmental collections of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Their presence in utero and their high prevalence in children who have no history of trauma support the assumption that they are congenital [1-3]. Abstract: Objective The sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) has dramatically reduced the rate of restenosis in comparison to that with the baremetal stent (BMS).This study aimed to evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of Firebird stent implantation for patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Methods From April 2006 through July 2007, 155 patients (mean age 58.93±10.27 years ) with CHD were implanted with Firebird stent or Cypher select stent at Daxing Hospital. Patients were followed up for one year. All-cause mortality, major adverse cardiac events (MACE, including cardiac death, myocardial infarction, recurrence of angina pectoris, heart failure, revascularization, and adverse arrhythmia) and stent thrombosis were compared between the 2 groups. Results Of the 155 consecutive patients, 147 patients were revascularized completely. Of these patients, 48 (with 59 lesions) were treated with Firebird stent, 59 patients (with 75 lesions) with Cypher select stent. The demographic characteristics were similar in the 2 groups. All the angiographic and procedural results were not significantly different between the 2 groups. All-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, recurrence of angina pectoris, MACE and stent thrombosis were almost identical between the 2 groups before discharge, at 6 months and at one year .Conclusion The short-term efficacy and safety of Firebird stent are similar to that of the cypher select stent for the treatment of patients with CHD.

Abstract: Ratanasampil (RNSP) is a traditional Tibetan medicine used for the treatment of stroke and cerebrovascular diseases. Previous discoveries that RNSP can reduce β-amyloid protein levels and increase learning and memory in Alzheimer’s mouse models (Tg2576) led us to investigate whether RNSP can improve cognitive functions in Alzheimer’s patients. In this study, 146 AD patients living in Qinghai province received either one gram or 0.33 gram daily of RNSP for 16 weeks. Placebo patients received Piracetam. Serum Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels were measured at the beginning of the study and after 4 and 16 weeks of treatment. Compared to the same group before treatment, MMSE scores, ADAS-cog scores and ADL scores were significantly improved (p < 0.01, p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively) in patients after 16-week treatment with high-dose RNSP No. significant differences were observed in either the low-dose RNSP or placebo groups (p > 0.05, p > 0.05). After 16-week treatment, serum TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and Aβ42 levels were significantly decreased (p < 0. 01) in the high-dose RNSP group, whereas no significant differences were found in the low-dose and placebo groups. The Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio was significantly decreased after 4-week and 16-week treatment in the high-dose RNSP group (p < 0. 05, p < 0.01). Furthermore, serum Aβ42 concentrations had a strong positive correlation with TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 levels. There were no observable adverse effects in either treatment or control groups. We conclude that further clinical trials of RNSP in Alzheimer disease are warranted.
Preparation and properties of CdS/Au composite nanorods and hollow Au tubes

Abstract: 1-dimensional (1D) metal-semiconductor nano-scale composite superstructures based on Au nanoparticles and CdS nanorods were prepared. The outer surface of CdS nanorods was modified with mercapto-ethylamine (MEA) in advance. With the aid of MEA, dense and uniform Au nanoparticles were deposited onto the external wall of CdS nanorods through in situ chemical reduction of AuCl4 ions. Those Au nanoparticles induced further electroless deposition and a continuous layer of Au was formed on CdS nanorods. Stable hollow Au tubes were obtained after the inner CdS cores were etched by HCl. UV-Vis, FL, XPS, EDX, TEM and SEM measurements were carried out to characterize the produced materials. The quenching of the defect emission of CdS in CdS-nanorod/Au-nanoparticle hybrid superstructures was detected, which was ascribed to the energy transfer from the exciton of CdS to surface plasma resonance level of Au.
Microscopic Phase-field Simulation of Competition Mechanism Between L12 and D022 Structure in Ni-Cr-Al Alloy

Abstract: Simulations are performed on temporal evolution of atom morphology and ordering parameters of Ni-14.5Cr-16.5 Al alloy during early precipitation process at different temperatures based on microscopic phase-field theory; the relationship between precipitation sequence and mechanism of L12 and D022 structure and precipitation temperature are illuminated. The nonstoichiometric ordered L12 phases appear first with congruent ordering spinodal decomposition mechanism which is then followed by precipitation of D022 phases at ordering domain boundaries of L12 phases by spinodal decomposition mechanism at 1073 K and 1223 K. The nonstoichiometric L12 phases transform to stoichiometric ordering phases gradually. The incubation period of L12 and D022 phases is shorter at 1073 K than that 1223 K, and growth speed is higher at 1073 K. At 1373 K, L12 and D022 phases appear simultaneously by non-classical nucleation and growth mechanism. After that the particles of D022 phases diminish and disappear gradually; L12 phases grow and single L12 phases are remained at last.
Absorption and slow light effect of pulsed light in a triple semiconductor quantum well

Abstract: Under the condition of two different cases, the absorption of a pulsed probe field and its slow propagation in a triple semiconductor quantum well are investigated. The result shows that semiconductor medium becomes transparent due to the action of control field. Another result shows that by choosing appropriate physical parameters, the slow propagation of the input field can be achieved. The proposed scheme has some potential applications and may lead to the development of the controlled technique of optical buffers and optical delay lines.

Abstract: An exact self-similar solution to a (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schr dinger equation with gain in the Bessel-Hermite lattice is obtained analytically. The stability of the analytical solution is confirmed by using numerical simulation. It is shown that the light bullet has a stable ellipsoid or vortex profile and a linear spatiotemporal chirp.

Abstract: Based on the theory of exponential wide band model of radiation absorption of gas molecules, the principle formulas of infrared spectroscopy diagnosis for flame temperature and composition concentration were deduced and a kind of practical calculating method was given. An infrared spectroscopy diagnosis system was established, and the experimental research was carried out with the system. The results show that the accuracy is relatively high, Thus, the aim to measure the flame temperature and composition concentration synchronously has been achieved.

Abstract: In order to understand the essence of Butterworth optimal control,uncover the correlation between the Butterworth optimal transfer functions and the weighting matrices Q and R,the inverse problems of Butterworth optimal control are studied in this paper.Firstly,the state feedback gain matrix K is designed by the method of Butterworth optimal control.Then,the parametric formula for calculating the weighting matrix Q is given.Finally,an example is given to illustrate the effectiveness and simplicity of the method for choosing the weighting matrix Q.

Abstract: 在基于小波域的盲水印系统中,由于小波变换的局部性,致使水印的嵌入可能会给原始图像带来类似于图像压缩中产生的“块效应”。为了在保持强度不变的前提下进一步提高水印的不可视性,提出了一种基于图像置乱预处理的小波域盲水印算法,即先将原始图像置乱,而后再将水印嵌入到图像小波域中,以达到将水印所引入的“块效应”化整为零地分布到图像的不同部分的目的,从而在很大程度上提高了水印视觉上的“不可感知性”。试验证明,这种算法是有效的。另外,经过置乱操作的图像,小波变换后得到的小波高频系数服从高斯分布,这就使得线性相关检测在这个水印系统中能够达到最优。
