Surface cooling for induction of mild hypothermia in conscious healthy volunteers - a feasibility trial
Christoph Testori, Fritz Sterz, Wilhelm Behringer, Alexander Spiel, Christa Firbas, Bernd Jilma
Critical Care , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/cc10506
Abstract: The trial was set at a clinical research ward in a tertiary care center, and included 16 healthy male volunteers 18 to 70 years old. Surface cooling was established by a novel non-invasive cooling pad with an esophageal target temperature of 32 to 34°C and maintenance for six hours. Shivering-control was achieved with meperidine and buspirone and additional administration of magnesium in eight subjects. The primary endpoint to reach a target temperature of 32 to 34°C was only reached in 6 of the 16 participating subjects. Temperatures below 35°C were reached after a median cooling time of 53 minutes (38 to 102 minutes). Cooling rate was 1.1°C/h (0.7 to 1.8°C). Additional administration of magnesium had no influence on cooling rate. At no time during the cooling procedure did the participants report uncomfortable conditions for which termination of cooling had to be considered. No severe skin damage was reported.Cooling to body temperature below 35°C by the use of non-invasive surface cooling is feasible and safe in conscious healthy volunteers. Further studies are needed to investigate an altered cooling protocol to achieve temperatures below 35°C.ISRCTN: ISRCTN50530495Therapeutic hypothermia improves neurological outcome and reduces the risk of death in patients after cardiac arrest [1,2]. In recent years, growing evidence in animal and human studies have documented or suggested the beneficial outcome effects of mild hypothermia also for stroke [3-11], for acute myocardial infarction [12-16], and for cardiogenic shock [17]. Rather than interacting on a particular pathway of post-ischemic reperfusion damage hypothermia influences multiple reactions leading to cell death [18-20].So far, the majority of therapeutic hypothermia research has involved cardiac arrest patients, in whom the induction and maintenance of mild hypothermia is facilitated by post-anoxic coma, anesthesia and paralysis to avoid shivering. The typical patient presenting to an emergency department wi

Ray synthetic seismograms: a useful tool in the International Data Center environment
P. Firbas
Annals of Geophysics , 1994, DOI: 10.4401/ag-4210
Abstract: In this paper some of the results of a feasibility study on ray synthetic seismograms usage are reported. A computational method, ways of composing synthetic traces, an application of the source wavelet and the radiation pattern and integration of such an approach into the Center for Seismic Studies (CSS) revision 3.0 structure are outlined. Further on, results obtained for model examples, nuclear explosions, and earthquakes are presented. Conclusions of the undertaken feasibility study help to understand that ray synthetic seismograms represent a very fast tool (results in no time ) and simultaneously represent a complex tool with all needed features. The ray synthetic seismograms can be implemented in various ways: to be computed automatically and used within the Intelligent Monitoring System, to be computed automatically and provided to the analyst, to provide a database of master events, to be computed interactively by an analyst during routine daily analysis.

Evaluation of wheat ear insects in large scale field in central Germany  [PDF]

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/as.2010.12010
Abstract: Wheat ear insects in large scale winter wheat field in Salzmünde (SaxsonyAnhalt) central Germany were evaluated. The present study aimed at studying the abundance of wheat blossom midges WBM, Sitodoplosis mosellana (Géhin), Contarinia tritici (Kirby) and thrips, Li mothrips cerealium (Haliday) and Haplothrips tritici (Kurdjumov). Infestation in winter wheat during the growing seasons 2007, 2008 and 2009 was evaluated. Three methods were used to determine population densities and damage of wheat midges and thrips; pheromone traps, inspection of ear insects and water traps. A strong correlation between midge’s catches and weather conditions was obtained in field ob servations. A positive correlation between phe romone catches and ear infestation levels was recorded; it was higher in 2008 than in 2009. On the other hand, in 2007 there was no synchro nization; S. mosellana hibernated emerged too late to coincide with the susceptible wheat growth stages. The chemical treatment applied at 2008 for highly infestation; there were sig nificant differences in thrips and midge num bers between treated and untreated. Thrips and midge numbers were lower in the treated than in control. The high midge populations in water traps were recorded at growth stages 7779 and 83 and the low populations were recorded at GS 75 and 7577. This gives a reliable base for de cision making to midges control.

Living Reviews in Democracy , 2009,
Abstract: This article reviews a selection of works on populism. Theoretical contributions concerning definitional and conceptual aspects of populism are discussed, as well as the conditions under which populism is likely. The focus is mainly on the relationship between populism and representative democracy. The overview of the theoretical literature shows that while in the 1960s there was no consensus on the meaning of populism, in the more recent literature there is agreement on at least two characteristics that are central to populism: a strong focus by populist leaders on the ‘people’, and an implicit or explicit reference to an ‘anti-group’, often the political elite, against which the ‘people’ is positioned. The usefulness of such a minimal definition is shown by looking at cases of populism in Russia, the United States, Western Europe and Latin America.

URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs130181 Only a few anthropologists have conducted "anthropology at home" on racism and discussed their problems during research afterwards. Working on and with "offenders at home" can lead to challenges within the field and during the analysis. The objective of this article is to discuss my own theoretical and methodological approach as an "anthropologist at home" during my fieldwork with three different speech communities (two of them perceived as racist and one of them as anti-racist). The article will discuss the position of "anthropology at home" within the discipline as well as the approach of my research within this field: doing anthropology at home among majoritized sections of society. Highlighting three examples from my research interviews, I will describe the different problems of distance and proximity, antipathy, sympathy and empathy encountered in the empirical research phase. The article closes with thoughts for the researcher who plans to apply an anthropology-at-home approach with (potential) offenders and the theoretical implications for research in complex societies URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs130181 Solo pocos los antropólogos que han hecho "antropología en casa" en torno al racismo y discutido
