Epidemiology of Mortality in Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital of Brazzaville  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: To describe the epidemiological aspects of the patients who died in polyvalent intensive care unit at University Hospital of Brazzaville. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study carried out in intensive care unit of University Hospital of Brazzaville, during period from January 2013 to December 2014. All patients who died at the unit regardless of age or sex were included. The parameters studied were age, sex, origin, reason for admission, causes of death, time of death, and length of hospitalization. Data were treated in Excel 2010 and Epi info 2007. Results: During the study period, 419 deaths out of 1121 admissions were recorded, representing a mortality rate of 37.4%. The average age was 46.2 ± 19.7 years with extremes ranging from 14 months to 90 years. The sex ratio was 0.9. Most of the deceased patients came from medical emergencies in 37.6% of the cases. Infectious (17.9%) and neurological (17.4%) pathologies were the most likely to cause death followed by cardiovascular pathologies (12.2%). Causes of death were dominated by severe sepsis and septic shock with 93.4% of infectious pathologies and stroke in 80.8% of neurological pathologies. In 42.3% of cases, the death occurred in the 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. time period. The average length of hospitalization for the deceased patients was 1.4 ± 0.5 days. All parameters studied significantly associated with mortality (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The mortality rate of patients admitted to the polyvalent intensive care unit at University Hospital of Brazzaville was high at 37.4%. Most of these patients were aged 40 years and older, male, with infectious and/or neurological pathologies. All deaths occurred within 48 hours of admission.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate socio-demographic profile of adults admitted in emergency for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at the University Hospital of Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo. We performed a prospective study within a period of six months, into the surgical unit of the emergency department of the University Hospital of Brazzaville. A total of 2617 patients were recorded, among which 268 cases were TBI (10.25%) where 142 cases were sampled in our series. The average age was 36.7 ± 16.6 years. The sex ratio was 6.1. The TBI was mainly due to road accident in 121 cases (85.2%) described as follows: motorcycle accident about 48 cases (39.7%) and the pedestrian’s injuries about 42 (34.8%). In the majority of the cases, cautions were not taken by the drivers; during the case of the motorcycle accident, about 97.9% of the riders did not wear a helmet. The TBI remains a growing public health concern in the low-income countries, like in Africa. Measurements on the road traffic regulation are to be strengthened to reduce the growth of this silent epidemic.
NEM Brand Eggshell Membrane Effective in the Treatment of Pain and Stiffness Associated with Osteoarthritis of the Knee in an Italian Study Population  [PDF]

Abstract: A single-center, open-label clinical study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NEM® as a natural treatment for pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis of the knee in an Italian population. NEM® brand eggshell membrane is a unique dietary supplement that contains naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans and proteins essential for maintaining healthy joints and connective tissues. Twenty-five subjects received oral NEM®, 500 mg once daily for four weeks. The primary outcome measure was to evaluate the mean effectiveness of NEM® in relieving general pain associated with moderate osteoarthritis of the knee at 10 and 30 days utilizing a 10-question, abbreviated questionnaire based on the WOMAC osteoarthritis questionnaire. Supplementation with NEM® produced a significant treatment response from baseline at both 10 days and 30 days for composite pain (40.6% reduction, p < 0.001; 66.4% reduction, p < 0.001, respectively). There was also a statistically significant concurrent reduction in analgesic use during the 30-day study period. Additionally, a significant treatment response from baseline was also observed for composite stiffness at both 10 days and 30 days (22.2% reduction, p = 0.009; 59.7% reduction, p < 0.001, respectively). There were no adverse events or serious adverse events reported during the study and the treatment was reported to be well tolerated by study participants. NEM® is an effective and safe natural therapeutic option for the treatment of both pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis of the knee. Supplementation with NEM®, 500 mg taken once daily, significantly reduced both pain and stiffness rapidly (10 days) and this effect continued to improve through 30 days. There was also a meaningful reduction in the amount of analgesic consumed on a weekly basis, which further enhanced patients’ safety.
Comparison of Physicochemical, Organoleptic and Nutritional Abilities of Eight Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas) Varieties  [PDF]

Abstract:

In Martinique (F.W.I.), biodiversity of vegetable varieties remain unexploited due to public unawareness or supply problems. To further enhance the sweet potato, physicochemical, sensory and nutritional characteristics of eight varieties of sweet potato were established. The eight sweet potatoes cultivars were noticeably diverse with phenotypic, sensory, physicochemical and nutritional characteristics which were very varied. The eight cultivars grown in Martinique were advantageously positioned in relation to the globally identified sweet potato, regarding fibre, starch, potassium, copper, vitamin B1, B3 and B9 contents. Compared to the ordinary potato, Martiniquan sweet potatoes have a much better nutritional potential. Energy value and vitamin C levels were twice as much as in normal potatoes. Martiniquan sweet potatoes cultivars were also richer in minerals and vitamins, with 2.7 times more vitamin B9 and 63 times more beta-carotene than the ordinary potato.

Physicochemical, Nutritional, Organoleptic Characteristics and Food Applications of Four Mango (Mangifera indica) Varieties  [PDF]

Abstract: Physicochemical characteristics of four varieties of mango (Julie, Bassignac, Green and Moussache) from Martinique (F.W.I.) were examined at three ripening stages. All ripening protocols studied showed an evolution in parameters between the harvesting and the expandable stage. Fruit and pulp firmness, starch and vitamin C contents decreased whereas pulp pH and carotenoids content increased. Only fruit size and polyphenols content were the same during the ripening. Bassignac and Julie varieties were richer in vitamin C, polyphenols and carotenoids. Moussache variety was the most energetic with important carbohydrates content. The Green variety differed significantly with a light-coloured pulp, low fruity odour and mango flavour, and a specific slightly sweet, very sour, bitter and astringent taste. Moussache and Bassignac varieties had a very sweet taste unlike the Julie variety with a specific slightly sweeter taste. Different processing methods were tested for each variety. Mangoes technological ability processing had been validated.

Abstract: Dewasa ini disiplin ilmu mengenai kecerdasan buatan berkembang pesat melaju bersama kecepatan perkembangan teknologi komputer. Kecerdasan buatan yang dimaksudkan adalah membuat suatu sistem agar komputer bisa berfikir layaknya manusia. Salah satu implementasi kecerdasan buatan adalah pengenalan pola sidik jari, dimana proses pengenalan pola itu sendiri dilakukan dengan melatih komputer agar komputer mempelajari suatu bentuk pola yang dimasukkan dan mampu untuk mengenali bentuk pola yang akan diujikan. Sebagai contoh implementasi pengenalan pola adalah pada bidang psikologi, dimana bentuk pola sidik jari seseorang dapat digunakan untuk mengenali perilaku dan kepribadiannya. Dalam makalah ini penulis mengimplementasikan jaringan syaraf tiruan untuk mengenali perilaku dan kepribadian seseorang berdasarkan pola sidik jari dengan menggunakan metode forward chaining. Sistem ini mampu menganalisis kombinasi pola sidik jari vortex atau sinus berdasarkan pengujian menggunakan jaringan syaraf tiruan dengan prosentase dikenali pola sinus atau vortex lebih besar dari 50%, apabila prosentase terkenali sebagai pola sinus lebih besar daripada prosentase pola vortex, maka pola sidik jari akan terkenali sebagai pola sinus, begitu juga sebaliknya. Selanjutnya aplikasi ini akan menganalisis kombinasi pola sidik jari dengan mencocokkan berdasarkan pohon keputusan, dimana terdapat 32 kombinasi sidik jari yang dikenali untuk menentukan perilaku dan kepribadian dari user. Dalam aplikasi ini terdapat 3 macam informasi yang dapat disajikan yaitu, informasi tentang kepribadian, keberuntungan dan perhatian dengan menggunakan software Delphi 6. Keakuratan proses konsultasi kepribadian pada aplikasi ini sangat tergantung pada input citra sidik jari yang dilakukan oleh pengguna (user).
Image Encryption on Mobile Phone Using Super Encryption Algorithm

Abstract: This study aims to obtain the digital image encryption algorithm with a simple but secure process, fast and efficient computing resources. The algorithms developed in this study were super-encryption algorithm that combines two of cipher called Playfair cipher and the Vigenere cipher. To improve security, a keystream generator was used to randomize the order of the next key in Vigenere cipher. In order to evaluate performance, the proposed algorithm was measured through a series of tests. These tests were implemented with Matlab included visual test and histogram analysis, information entropy, encryption quality, correlation analysis, and also time analysis. The test results show that cipher image looks visually random.The image histogram of the plain image and cipher image also seen a significant difference between the two of them. Testing was also performed on mobile phones with Symbian and BADA operating system based on Java Micro Edition Programming. Trial results show that the algorithm was require less computational resources; with average time for image encryption is 3.76 seconds, and the average time for image decryption is 0.97 seconds. The new proposed image encryption scheme has satisfactory security which makes it a potential candidate for encryption of image data. Alopecia areata and autoimmunity: A clinical study

Abstract: Alopecia areata (AA) frequently occur in association with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid disorders, anemias and other skin disorders with autoimmune etiology. Despite numerous studies related to individual disease associations in alopecia areata, there is paucity of literature regarding comprehensive studies on concomitant cutaneous and systemic diseases. The present study has been designed to determine if there is a significant association between alopecia areata and other autoimmune diseases. This study covers 71 patients with the diagnosis of alopecia areata as the case group and 71 patients with no evidence of alopecia areata as the control group. Among the cutaneous diseases associated with AA, atopic dermatitis (AD) showed maximum frequency with an O/E ratio of 2.5, which indicates that it is two to three times more common in patients with alopecia areata. In our study, thyroid disorders showed the highest frequency with on O/E ratio of 3.2 and a P value of 0.01, which is statistically highly significant. Among the thyroid disorders, hypothyroidism was the most frequent association (14.1%) in our study. Since systemic involvement is not infrequent in patients with alopecia areata, it is imperative to screen these patients for associated disorders, particularly atopy, thyroid diseases, anemias and other autoimmune disorders, especially if alopecia areata is chronic, recurrent and extensive.
