Abstract: Cavernous lymphangioma of the chest wall is a very rare disease entity, and only a few cases have ever been documented in the literature. Cases of recurrent cavernous lymphangioma after surgical excision of a cystic lymphangioma on the same side of the chest wall are quite uncommon. We report a case of a 10-year-old girl, with a giant cavernous lymphangioma of the left lateral chest wall extending into the axilla, who had undergone surgical excision of a cystic lymphangioma 9 years earlier.

Abstract: Traumatic diaphragmatic rupture (TDR) is very rare in the pediatric age group. Because of its rarity and its coexistence with more injuries, the diagnosis is often delayed. Very little has been written about this condition in the pediatric age group. TDR, while uncommon, should be considered in cases of blunt thoracic trauma. All patients should undergo meticulous examination preoperatively. The clinical presentation and importance of making an accurate diagnosis and surgery is highlighted. We report a case of secondary spontaneous traumatic left-sided diaphragmatic rupture in a child that was managed by delayed surgical repair.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the level of physical activity in undergraduate students and to investigate its potential association with smoking. methods: a cross-sectional study with a stratified sample proportional to the total number of students was carried out in gurupi, central-west brazil, in 2005. the sample comprised 871 subjects. the ipaq-8 short version was applied to assess the level of physical activity. smoking status was evaluated by a modified world health organization (who) questionnaire and the magnitude of smokers' nicotine dependence was quantified using the fagerstr?m nicotine dependence scale. the frequencies, prevalences and prevalence ratios were determined by yates' chi-square test or fisher's exact test in the entire sample and stratified by area, course, shift and gender, with a 5% statistical significance level. results: mean age was 25 years old (sd±8) and mean age at first smoking experience was 17 years old (sd±4). the prevalence of physical inactivity and smoking was 29.9% and 7.2%, respectively. the overall prevalence of sedentary smokers and non-smokers was 8.5%, and 91.5%, respectively, but the difference was not statistically significant. a higher prevalence of smoking and physical inactivity was found in those over 25 (48.6%, p <0.05). nicotine dependence was "very low" in most subjects (68.2%, p <0.05). smoking was more prevalent in males (10.8%, p <0.05) and the level of physical inactivity was not different in both males and females (p >0.05). conclusions: physical inactivity was seen on both smokers and non-smokers in the same proportion and no association was found between these two variables. low prevalences of physical inactivity and smoking found in the study may be explained by available ongoing preventive and education programs, which should be implemented in the long run.

Abstract: Fermentation of various foods by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is one of the oldest forms of biopreservation practised by mankind. Bacterial antagonism has been recognized for over a century but in recent years this phenomenon has received more scientific attention, particulary in the use of various strains of lactic acid bacteria. One important attribute of LAB is their ability to produce antimicrobicrobial compounds called bacteriocin. In recent years, interest in the compounds has grown substantially due to their potential usefulness as natural substitute for chemical food preservatives in the production of foods with enhanced shelf life and/or safety. This balance is achived by its inhibitory effect upon the harmful pathogenic microorganisms. This paper presents some background on the scientific research about lactic acid bacteria as probiotics and their bacteriocins for healthy nutrition of fermented food. Probiotics had been of interest in the promotion of good health in animals and man. Some of the positive effects of probiotics are: growth promotion of farm animals, protection of host from intestinal infections, alleviation of lactose intolerance, relief of constipation, anticarcinogenic effect, anticholesterolaemic effects, nutrient synthesis and bioavailability, prevention of genital and urinary tract infections and imunostimulatory effects

Mediators of Inflammation , 2006,
Abstract: To determine whether there was a specific inflammatory process in severe asthmatics, the phenotypic characteristics of induced sputum immune cells were analysed among patients with severe asthma. Twenty-two induced sputa (10 severe asthmatics) were studied. Flow cytometric analysis was performed using immune cells of the sputum and monoclonal antibodies to CD3, CD4, CD8, CD56, CD25, and TCRγδ . The number of NKT (CD3 + CD 56+ ) cells was significantly higher in the sputum of severe asthmatics compared with mild asthmatic and healthy control groups ( p<.05 ). CD8+CD 56+ cells were the predominant subtype of the increased NKT cells in severe asthmatics. CD3 +CD56+Vα24 +, TCRγδ CD56+, and CD4+CD25+ T cells were significantly increased in severe asthmatic patients. These results suggest that the immunopathogenesis of severe asthmatics vary between severe and mild asthmatics, and that CD8+ CD 56+ NKT cells may play an important role in the immunopathogenesis of severe asthma.

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study is to report a case of arachnoid cyst due to mass effect on the thoracic marrow. Observation: A 15-year-old patient was admitted to our institution and complaining of high back pain. Three months before he developed progressive and occasional back pain with thoracic irradiation in hemi-belt, increased by the dorsal decubitus. Neurological examination revealed a spasmodic paraplegia. The muscular strength was quoted as 2 to the left and 3 to the right on a scale of 5. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed and extradural cyst located to the dorsal spinal cord. The ablation of a voluminous translucent cyst was achieved after a vast decompressive laminectomy from the sixth to the eighth thoracic vertebra. The dural communication with the cyst was stitched. After surgery, the pain has disappeared and the neurological recovery was progressive over a period of 21 days. The diagnosis of arachnoid cyst was confirmed by histological examination. Conclusion: The extradural thoracic arachnoid cyst is a rare affection of good forecast. In the symptomatic form, the surgery as soon as possible remains the solution. The MRI keeps all its interest for the diagnostic orientation and the therapeutic strategy.
