Abstract: Cavernous lymphangioma of the chest wall is a very rare disease entity, and only a few cases have ever been documented in the literature. Cases of recurrent cavernous lymphangioma after surgical excision of a cystic lymphangioma on the same side of the chest wall are quite uncommon. We report a case of a 10-year-old girl, with a giant cavernous lymphangioma of the left lateral chest wall extending into the axilla, who had undergone surgical excision of a cystic lymphangioma 9 years earlier.

Abstract: Traumatic diaphragmatic rupture (TDR) is very rare in the pediatric age group. Because of its rarity and its coexistence with more injuries, the diagnosis is often delayed. Very little has been written about this condition in the pediatric age group. TDR, while uncommon, should be considered in cases of blunt thoracic trauma. All patients should undergo meticulous examination preoperatively. The clinical presentation and importance of making an accurate diagnosis and surgery is highlighted. We report a case of secondary spontaneous traumatic left-sided diaphragmatic rupture in a child that was managed by delayed surgical repair.
Management for Pediatric Pleural Empyema in Resource-Poor Country: Is Chest Tube Drainage with Antiseptic Lavage-Irrigation Better than Tube Thoracostomy Alone?  [PDF]

Abstract: Drainage by chest tube thoracostomy is widely used in treatment of early empyema thoracis in children, but drainage with antiseptic lavage-irrigation is more frequent in our context since the last 20 years. This study was to determine which was more effective in our experience comparing chest tube drainage with catheter antiseptic lavage-irrigation versus drainage by chest tube thoracostomy alone in the management of empyema thoracis in children. Patients and Methods: Demographic, clinical and microbiological data on children with thoracic empyema undergoing drainage by chest tube thoracostomy alone or with antiseptic lavage-irrigation were obtained from 2 thoracic surgical centers from September 2008 to December 2014. It was a retrospective study included 246 children (137 boys and 109 girls) who were managed for empyema thoracis at the author’s different department of surgery. Outcomes analysis with respect to treatment efficacy, hospital duration, chest tube duration, hospital costs, and need for subsequent procedures was analyzed and compared in the 2 groups. Results: Drainage of pus and antiseptic irrigation resulted in resolution of pyrexia with improvement in general condition in 85.82% of patients in group 1 and by tube thoracostomy alone in 73.95% in group 2. There are a significant difference in the length of hospital stay (p = 0.022), duration of chest tubes in situ (p = 0.040), treatment coast (p = 0.015) and outcome of stage 2 empyema disease (p = 0.037) between the 2 groups. Conclusion: it seems that chest tube drainage with antiseptic lavage-irrigation method is associated with a higher efficacy, shorter length of hospital stay, shorter duration of chest tube in situ, less cost and better outcome of stage 2 empyema diseases than a treatment strategy that utilizes chest tube thoracostomy alone.
The Impact of Tax Collection in Achieving Revenue Targets: The Directorate General of Taxes of Mali Case Study  [PDF]

Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2015.53046
Abstract: In this case study we examine the relationship between the collection of taxes and revenue targets generated by each of the Financial Services at the Directorate General Taxes of the Republic of Mali. Revenues generated by the Directorate General of Taxes contributed a big chunk of funds to the Malian Treasury, about 40%, with our focus being on the year 2012. After economic modeling and estimation, we realized that there is a positive correlation between tax collection changes and the revenues generated. The estimates of the revenue growth model of Directorate General of Taxes in Mali show that it’s influenced by changes in the collections of taxes.

Abstract: Between August 1996 and December 1998, direct and membrane feeding methods were compared for the infectivity of children and adolescent gametocyte carriers to anopheline mosquitoes in the village of Bancoumana in Mali. Gametocyte carriers were recruited twice a month through a screening of members of 30 families using Giemsa-stained thick blood smears. F1 generation mosquitoes issued from individual female wild mosquitoes from Bancoumana were reared in a controlled insectary conditions and fed 5% sugar solution in the laboratory in Bamako, until the feeding day when they are starved 12 hours before the feeding experiment. These F1 generation mosquitoes were divided in two groups, one group fed directly on gametocyte carriers and the other fed using membrane feeding method. Results from 372 Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte carriers showed that children aged 4–9 years were more infectious than adolescents (p = 0.039), especially during the rainy season. Data from 35 carriers showed that mosquitoes which were used for direct feeding were about 1.5 times more likely to feed (p < 0.001) and two times more likely to become infected, if they fed (p < 0.001), than were those which were used for membrane feeding. Overall, infectivity was about three-times higher for direct feeding than for membrane feeding (p < 0.001).Although intensity of infectivity was lower for membrane feeding, it could be a surrogate to direct feeding for evaluating transmission-blocking activity of candidate malaria vaccines. An optimization of the method for future trials would involve using about three-times more mosquitoes than would be used for direct feeding.Studies of vector-parasite relationships under field conditions have helped to identify human reservoirs of infection[1,2] host-, parasite-, and vector-based determinants of infection[3]; the natural efficiency of sporogonic development in the mosquito vector Anopheles gambiae[4]; and naturally occurring transmission-blocking antibodies [1,5-7

Web Standards as Standard Pieces in Robotics
Sekou L. Remy
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: Modern robotics often involves the use of web technologies as a means to cope with the complexity of design and operation. Many of these technologies have been formalized into standards, which are often avoided by those in robotics and controls because of a sometimes warranted fear that "the web" is too slow, or too uncertain for meaningful control applications. In this work we argue that while web technologies may not be applicable for all control, they should not be dismissed outright because they can provide critical help with system integration. Web technologies have also advanced significantly over the past decade. We present the details of an application of a web server to perform open and close-loop control (between 3Hz and 1kHz) over a variety of different network topologies. In our study we also consider the impact of a web browser to implement the control of the plant. Our results confirm that meaningful control can be performed using web technologies, and also highlight design choices that can limit their applicability.

Abstract: This article is a sociological analysis of the phenomenon of drug trafficking and organized crime in Mali. It seeks to understand the mechanisms of drug trafficking and organized crime. It is based on the qualitative method as the documentary analysis tool. Hybrid theory served as a model of analysis to understand drug trafficking and organized crime in Mali. Sociological analysis of the phenomenon of drugs and organized crime in Mali shows that the size of the territory, poverty and bad governance are the causes of drug trafficking and organized crime. Thus, there is a real link between drug trafficking and organized crime in Mali. Their socio-economic impacts are global, which need a global response to contain.
Using Genetic Algorithms to Benchmark the Cloud
Jeff Kinnison,Sekou L. Remy
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: This paper presents a novel application of Genetic Algorithms(GAs) to quantify the performance of Platform as a Service (PaaS), a cloud service model that plays a critical role in both industry and academia. While Cloud benchmarks are not new, in this novel concept, the authors use a GA to take advantage of the elasticity in Cloud services in a graceful manner that was not previously possible. Using Google App Engine, Heroku, and Python Anywhere with three distinct classes of client computers running our GA codebase, we quantified the completion time for application of the GA to search for the parameters of controllers for dynamical systems. Our results show statistically significant differences in PaaS performance by vendor, and also that the performance of the PaaS performance is dependent upon the client that uses it. Results also show the effectiveness of our GA in determining the level of service of PaaS providers, and for determining if the level of service of one PaaS vendor is repeatable with another. Such a concept could then increase the appeal of PaaS Cloud services by making them more financially appealing.
