Abstract: In this paper, we present the preparation of a colloidal suspension of particles obtained from sugarcane bagasse, with minimal chemical change in the lignocellulosic material, and demonstrate its use for high throughput assays of hydrolases using Brazilian termites as the screened organisms.Important differences between the use of the natural substrate and commercial cellulase substrates, such as carboxymethylcellulose or crystalline cellulose, were observed. This suggests that wood feeding termites, in contrast to litter feeding termites, might not be the best source for enzymes that degrade sugarcane biomass.Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on earth, synthesized by plants at a rate of approximately 1011 to 1012 tons per year [1]. Lignocellulosic resources comprise a promising alternative to fossil fuels and, in the context of the global warming crisis, the need to find ways of converting these materials into usable forms of energy has become of paramount importance and may have strong socioeconomic implications, especially in developing tropical countries [2].In Brazil, the most promising lignocellulosic resource for biofuel production is sugarcane bagasse [3]. Bagasse is a byproduct of sugar and alcohol production, obtained after the milling of the sugarcane stalk, and is currently burned by the refineries. However, research is being carried out on the hydrolysis and fermentation of sugarcane bagasse for the production of ethanol - the most important biofuel for cars in the country [4]. Techniques for pretreatment of this material by steam explosion, organosol, auto-hydrolysis, acid hydrolysis, alkaline hydrogen peroxide and alkaline extraction are being used in the so-called second generation ethanol refineries [5]. After pretreatment, the material is subjected to enzymatic treatments, and the hydrolyzed products are fermented to produce ethanol [6]. Therefore, the discovery of new enzymes with hydrolytic activity suitable for this kind of lignocellulos
Structural evaluation of sugar cane bagasse steam pretreated in the presence of CO2 and SO2
Roberta CNR Corrales, Fabiana MT Mendes, Clarissa C Perrone, Celso SantAnna, Wanderley de Souza, Yuri Abud, Elba PS Bon, Viridiana Ferreira-Leitao
Biotechnology for Biofuels , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1754-6834-5-36
Abstract: SEM and TEM data showed that the structural modifications undergone by the pretreatment with CO2 were less pronounced in comparison to that using SO2, which can be directly related to the combined severity of each pretreatment. According to XRD data, untreated bagasse showed, as expected, a lower crystallinity index (CI = 48.0%) when compared to pretreated samples with SO2 (CI = 65.5%) or CO2 (CI = 56.4%), due to the hemicellulose removal of 68.3% and 40.5%, respectively. FTIR spectroscopy supported SEM, TEM and XRD results, revealing a more extensive action of SO2.The SEM, TEM, XRD and FTIR spectroscopy techniques used in this work contributed to structural and chemical analysis of the untreated and pretreated bagasse. The images from SEM and TEM can be related to the severity of SO2 pretreatment, which is almost twice higher. The crystallinity index values obtained from XRD showed that pretreated materials have higher values when compared with untreated material, due to the partial removal of hemicellulose after pretreatment. FTIR spectroscopy supported SEM, TEM and XRD results. CO2 can actually be used as impregnating agent for steam pretreatment, although the present study confirmed a more extensive action of SO2.
Musealiza??o, crítica de arte e o exercício experimental da liberdade em Mario Pedrosa
Sant'Anna, Sabrina Parracho;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862011000200008
Abstract: at least, since the last two decades of the twentieth century, much has been said about the accumulation and the collectionism of material culture in contemporary societies. starting from the analysis of the work of mario pedrosa in the 1950s and from the contemporary production in art criticism, i have attempted to compare the profession by the time of its institutionalization in brazil, and today, when it is said that the profession lost strength. in this sense, i have tried to understand how criticism is changing and thus directing the reception of pedrosa's work.
Dominant screening process in the projectile electron loss for F- + Ar collisions
Sant'Anna, M. M.;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332006000400006
Abstract: a comparison between projectile electron loss cross sections for negative, f-, and positive, he+, projectiles is presented for collisions with ar target. the behavior of the two collision systems is similar for the projectile electron loss with target ionization. for projectile electron loss without target ionization (the so-called screening electron-loss process), quite different situations are presented for the studied positive and negative projectiles. for he++ ar, the loss without target ionization collision channel is negligible for intermediate-to-low energies. on the other hand, for f-+ ar, this collision channel is the dominant one in the total projectile electron loss at intermediate-to-low velocities. the roles played by coupling with the electron capture by the projectile collision channel and by the very different binding energies for negative and positive projectiles are discussed.
?Quién hace la noticia en el Parlamento brasile?o?: Análisis comparativo de las rutinas de los newsmakers del Senado federal
Sant'Anna, Francisco;
Comunicación y sociedad , 2009,
Abstract: press coverage of the brazilian parliament is done daily by a contingent of more than 200 journalists. one part of that contingent is hired by the traditional press, while another part works for the federal senate mass media of source structures (mfsf). the aim of this article is to delimit the social-professional profile, the routines, values and journalistic paradigms adopted by those professionals of the mfsf in a comparative study with their colleagues from the traditional press, as well their social representation they possess in relation to the mfsf.
Probabilistic composition of criteria for schedule monitoring
Sant'Anna, Annibal Parracho;
Pesquisa Operacional , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-74382010000300013
Abstract: time is a key factor in management. along a project execution, keeping the best completion rates, not too slow and not too fast, is a central objective but such a best rate cannot be suitably anticipated in a precise schedule. it must be determined on the job, on a comparative basis. this paper develops an evaluation system involving the measurement of schedule fitting indicators designed to deal with such conditions. this evaluation system is based on a transformation of the data into probabilities of reaching the frontier of best performances that permits precisely composing measurements on correlated attributes. this feature of the system allows for combining criteria evaluated on elementary and on aggregate levels.
Rough sets analysis with antisymmetric and intransitive attributes: classification of brazilian soccer clubs
Sant'Anna, Annibal Parracho;
Pesquisa Operacional , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-74382008000200003
Abstract: this work aims to develop alternative classifications for teams in a championship. data from the 2005 brazilian national soccer championship are analyzed. rough sets theory (rst) is employed in this analysis. by evaluating the quality of the approximation in terms of probabilities of concordance and discordance between the classification by the set of decision attributes and by the set of condition attributes of a randomly chosen pair of objects as discernible or indiscernible, the modification of rst employed allows to consider antisymmetric and intransitive relations. the balance between the numbers of goals scored by the pairs of clubs in direct confrontations is one such relation.
Data envelopment analysis of randomized ranks
Sant'Anna, Annibal P.;
Pesquisa Operacional , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-74382002000200007
Abstract: probabilities and odds, derived from vectors of ranks, are here compared as measures of efficiency of decision-making units (dmus). these measures are computed with the goal of providing preliminary information before starting a data envelopment analysis (dea) or the application of any other evaluation or composition of preferences methodology. preferences, quality and productivity evaluations are usually measured with errors or subject to influence of other random disturbances. reducing evaluations to ranks and treating the ranks as estimates of location parameters of random variables, we are able to compute the probability of each dmu being classified as the best according to the consumption of each input and the production of each output. employing the probabilities of being the best as efficiency measures, we stretch distances between the most efficient units. we combine these partial probabilities in a global efficiency score determined in terms of proximity to the efficiency frontier.
