Abstract: Iron(III)-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (FeTPPS) is used as non-physiological metalloporphyrin model for the natural iron (III)-protoporphyrin IX (FePPIX) resulting from hemoglobin degradation to investigate ligand binding reactions in aqueous solution. Studies were conducted on the interaction of FeTPPS with Chloroquine, Quinine, and Quinidine, which are historically the most common quinoline-based drugs used to treat malaria, an infectious disease afflicting several hundred millions every year worldwide, mainly in tropical regions. Using UV-Visible spectrophotometry, the binding reaction was studied at pH 7.40 in purely aqueous solution, and in aqueous solution containing NaNO3 at concentration of 0.1 M. Fitted titration curves obtained were in agreement with experimental data according to a formation scheme of 1:1 complex (1 FeTPPS μ-oxo-dimer: 1 Antimalarial). Values of apparent binding constant (K) obtained were between 4.3 × 103 M-1 to 7.59 × 104 M-1, demonstrating that FeTPPS and the antimalarials formed stable complexes. The stability of the complex decreased when NaNO3 was added to the solution. This ionic strength dependence was ascribed to electrostatic effects.
On the index of the quotient of a Borel subalgebra by an ad-nilpotent ideal

Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: In this paper, we give upper bounds for the index of the quotient of the Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra or its nilpotent radical by an ad-nilpotent ideal. For the nilpotent radical quotient, our bound is a generalization of the formula for the index given by Panov in the type A case. In general, this bound is not exact. Using results from Panov, we show that the upper bound for the Borel quotient is exact in the type $A$ case, and we conjecture that it is exact in general.
Generation of magnetic fields by large-scale vortices in rotating convection

Physics , 2015, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.91.041001
Abstract: We propose a new self-consistent dynamo mechanism for the generation of large-scale magnetic fields in natural objects. Recent computational studies have described the formation of large-scale vortices (LSVs) in rotating turbulent convection. Here we demonstrate that for magnetic Reynolds numbers below the threshold for small-scale dynamo action, such turbulent flows can sustain large-scale magnetic fields --- i.e. fields with a significant component on the scale of the system.

BSM constraints from EW measurements
Degrande, Celine
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2013,
Abstract: We investigate the impact of heavy new physics on W bosons productions at hadron colliders using an effective field theory. After listing all the relevant dimension-six operators, their effects are computed taking into account LEP constraints. Additionally, the effective approach is compared to anomalous couplings regarding several issues like unitarity.
New physics in top decay
Degrande, Celine
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2013,
Abstract: After a short introduction to effective field theories, most of their features are illustrated using the top decay. The effects of heavy new physics on the top decay are computed and the constraints on the coefficients of the dimension-six operators are derived from the available measurements.
Building creative communities: How does a university museum work with family learning in a challenging community context?
Celine West
University Museums and Collections Journal , 2009,
Abstract: UCL Museums and Collections have worked with parents and children in the London Borough of Haringey for the past 4 years. The successful partnership between the Collections’ education officer and Haringey’s parental involvement coordinator has led to a sustained program of outreach in the Borough, mainly with parents at family learning workshops in schools, and with parents and primary school children in schools, children’s centers and play groups. Haringey is home to one of the most diverse populations in the UK, with a high proportion of recent immigrants as well as low levels of attainment at school, high levels of poverty and crime. Community cohesion is viewed as key to strategies for improvement; Haringey has been a leader in parental involvement in schools and in creative work with museums partnering schools for the past decade. This paper analyses the special impact a university museum can have in this context, with museum outreach used to engage parents not only in new subjects and their own creativity but also in understanding more of what and how their children learn and raising aspirations. Object handling workshops provide a forum for discussion with others in the community and often act as a starting point for people to tell their own stories for the first time.
O corte da genitália feminina: rompendo o debate e ainda assim, violando direitos humanos
Celine Jacquemin
Female Genital Cutting: shattering the debate yet still violating human rights
Celine Jacquemin
Revista Espa?o Acadêmico , 2010,
Abstract: Summary: The international fight against the various forms of female circumcision, or the mutilation of the genitals of women and children, has many different aspects. Although no religious text from any religion suggests the practice, still in many countries the torture of young girls and women continue. Even though there is an assumption that the phenomenon is exclusive to the developing world, many practices in the West, such as vaginal and vulvar surgeries, as well as changes to the face and body of women can be included in the same tendency to portray women as impure, incomplete, and in need of improvement so that she can be accepted by prospective husbands.
