Revista Brasileira de Reumatologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0482-50042006000600012
Abstract: sometimes, it is not possible to establish an obvious distinction between the muscular manifestations due to infectious diseases and the idiopathic myositis. in fact, in some situations it is believed there is a causal relationship between those diseases. we describe the case of a patient with clinical and laboratorial features of polymyositis who had developed leptospirosis previously. the hypothesis of the infectious agent acting as a "trigger" to the muscular disease is discussed.

Riboflavina: uma vitamina multifuncional
Souza Ana Carolina Santos de,Ferreira Carmen Veríssima,Jucá Marilena Bezerra,Aoyama Hiroshi
Química Nova , 2005,
Abstract: Riboflavin, a component of the B2 vitaminic complex, plays important roles in biochemistry, especially in redox reactions, due to the ability to participate in both one- and two-electron transfers as well as acting as a photosensitizer. Accordingly, low intakes of this vitamin have been associated with different diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Riboflavin is thought to contribute to oxidative stress through its capacity to produce superoxide but, interestingly, it can also promote the reduction of hydroperoxides. This peculiar and multifunctional behavior allows riboflavin to take part in various biochemical pathways as a nucleophile and an electrophile, turning it into a versatile and important biological compound.

Abstract: this article presents an experience of popular education in mental health in the context of the psychiatric reform. such experience occurred in the district of pernambués, territory of the centro de aten??o psicossocial álcool e outras drogas (center for psychosocial assistance alcohol and other drugs), located in the city of salvador, state of bahia. this center is the field for the practice of interns of the mental health nucleus of the multiprofessional health internship of universidade do estado da bahia (uneb - university of the state of bahia). such strategy was enabled by the organization of community forums involving many social actors. in this work, we used the methodology of experience systematization proposed by holliday. by giving voice and time to each speaker/participant, in equal levels of knowledge and power, the popular education strategy allowed the people involved in this process to politically organize themselves. in addition, these people participated in the collective construction of new knowledge and practices in the mental health area, in keeping with the valuation of life in its multiplicity.
Chemical composition and antifungal activity of Hyptis suaveolens (L.) poit leaves essential oil against Aspergillus species
Moreira, Ana Carolina Pessoa;Lima, Edeltrudes de Oliveira;Wanderley, Paulo Alves;Carmo, Egberto Santos;Souza, Evandro Leite de;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822010000100006
Abstract: this study aimed to identify the constituents of the essential oil from hyptis suaveolens (l.) leaves using a gas chromatograph -mass spectrometer and assess its inhibitory effect on some potentially pathogenic aspergilli (a. flavus, a. parasiticus, a. ochraceus, a. fumigatus and a. niger). eucaliptol (47.64 %) was the most abundant component in the oil, followed for gama-ellemene (8.15 %), beta-pynene (6.55 %), (+)3-carene (5.16 %), trans-beta-cariophyllene (4.69 %) and germacrene (4.86 %). the essential oil revealed an interesting anti-aspergillus property characterized by a minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration of 40 and 80 μl/ml, respectively. the oil at 80 and 40 μl/ml strongly inhibited the mycelial growth of a. fumigatus and a. parasiticus along 14 days. in addition, at 10 and 20 μl/ml the oil was able to cause morphological changes in a. flavus as decreased conidiation, leakage of cytoplasm, loss of pigmentation and disrupted cell structure suggesting fungal wall degeneration. these findings showed the interesting anti-aspergillus property of h. suaveolens leaves essential oil supporting its possible rational use as alternative source of new antifungal compounds to be applied in the aspergillosis treatment.
